The argument for PBS and NPR is the same as the argument for the USPS. They were founded in 1970, the era of antennas and broadcast towers. Some communities are simply too small and remote for private corporations to pay for the infrastructure. I lived in a small, remote town in BC Canada for years, and the only station you could pick up on the radio was CBC Radio1. As for CBC TV? We lived too far downhill towards the shore, but my friend who lived near the top of the hill could get her rabbit ears to work. Publicly funding national radio and TV was a way of providing information and entertainment to people in remote areas. Just like USPS delivers to every address in America, even in remote locations that aren't profitable enough for private delivery companies like UPS to serve. These are publicly funded because their mandate is to provide service to EVERYONE. Imagine if USPS decided one day that it would only deliver Democrat campaign materials, not Republican. That's where we are now with PBS and NPR. Not to mention that with communications technology having mostly reached even the remotest communities in the country, there's no need for it.

Defunding NPR is way overdue. It's been slanted for a long time. As far as the police go if they would police themselves we wouldn't have the problem. They need oversight, keep the police budget the same but make it include paying for third-party oversight. Police officers should not have a union. They should have to carry liability insurance just like a doctor. Then just like in medicine, your insurance cost goes up with every mistake. Too many mistakes means you can't afford to do the job.
