My favorite shorebird. I love to get up at 4:30 am, drive for an hour and photograph them at Nickerson beach on Long Island at sunrise during July and August. After the chicks are fledged they will disappear until next year.

Who knew those baby birds could ingest a fish that was larger than the bird! Awesome. We have these skimmers in Santa Barbara, CA, seasonally. One of my favorite birds.

I was amazed that the baby could swallow a fish that size without choking on it.

Such an elegant critter. Question: any idea why the chick spreads her/his wings low to the sand to be fed? Is it just basic attention-getting?

That's called mantling. It's a way of protecting whatever food a young bird might get in the nest. It then becomes a behaviour associated with getting food.
I remember eve a name called Alexascard on telegram here I guess now I got a cc from him...
