When I was growing up my dad had horses and my grandfather when he was young had farmed with horses because this was before the tractor . In the winter My father would give the horse oats every evening along with their hay. He said the oats would raise their metabolism so they would make more body heat to stay warm in the snowy cold winter where we lived. When spring arrived my dad would decrease the oats slowly. So sounds like farmers knew this about oats before the researchers. There is an old saying, "He is feeling his oats", which means the person is feeling high energy level.
I’ve been dealing with PCOS for the past 10 years and now that I’ve incorporated oats back into my diet, I am losing weight. I have tried EVERYTHING including Keto. Since I’ve reintroduced oats back into my diet, I’m down 1-2 pounds every week! EVERY week! Please understand how much progress that is being that many PCOS women cannot lose weight at all! I’m soooo shook!

Oatmeal is 90% of my diet for about 12 years. I've been maintaining a very low weight for a long time. I love oatmeal! Great video!

I just started eating oatmeal for it's fiber and was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked. If I don't have oatmeal for a day or two I'm still regular. I love having oatmeal with maple syrup rather than refined sugar and I just eat it all up. The texture is wonderful as well. I keep telling my mom she needs to eat oatmeal because she has bad constipation as well and uses caffeine and milk as laxatives.

Same as Asians who eat rice three times a day. But the truth to that is we don't eat a lot as there's not a lot of choice but rice. This is where I grew up where everything is boiled or broiled and oil is a luxury

I made Steel Cut Oats for a Week a couple of days ago. Here is the recipe: 3 cups Bob's Red Mill Steel Cut Oats, 8 cups water, pinch salt, 5 minutes Instant Pot (Manual) with natural release. You can also add 1 cup of plant milk like Ripple or something. Then 7 cups water. Makes it a bit more creamy but it's going to be creamy even with water. So good! Top with blueberries!
Nice video! I started eating oatmeal out of a desperate need for a high fiber food. I found in about three days of eating oatmeal that it had a huge effect on my constipation to the point I am "regular". It's very amazing in that regard alone but I've also noticed large amounts of fat are just melting right off of me. I don't own a scale and not taking pictures of my body because that just makes me feel uncomfortable to do. Years of being fat will do that. I do about 12-18hour intermittent fasts everyday because that's just how my body likes to operate so I finally started to listen and I find that losing weight is so easy. I've dropped four inches off my waist. My family members tell me I look like I did when I was in highschool (10years ago) so I literally gained my youth back. I do stay active for work and I use resistance bands for muscle hypertrophy and strength gaining. Very low to moderate exercise. Check out Mike Mentzer for building muscle efficiently. All in all, oatmeal is a miracle food for me.
I ate oatmeal three days a week for lunch well as my first meal of the day at lunchtime and then I ate a regular dinner. My weight went down, and my cholesterol actually went down. For reasons that I won’t go into I stopped my oatmeal regimen. I had myyearly physical December 26. My weight had gone back up which I knew but more importantly my cholesterol has gone up so much. My doctor was talking about putting me on medication. Oatmeal is back on the menu!
I made oatmeal the other night then put them in the fridge over night. I ate them for breakfast after checking my sugar then half an hour, one hour, one and a half hours and two hours after eating them. It didn't mess with my blood sugar hardly at all. Between that and now this video I will be eating old fashioned rolled oats more often in my diet. Thanks for the video.
I was regularly eating oatmeal with fruits, nuts, seeds... and then it turns out I have a genetic trait for developing gout and oatmeal has purines in it (purines are turned to uric acid and high levels of uric acid is what causes gout). I'd been eating pearl barley with dinner, but several months ago I started to use pearl barley as an oatmeal substitute - and it's awesome! I love the texture and chew more than oatmeal. I've branched out into using pearl barley as a sushi rice for my poké bowls, and using hulled or hullless barley for various dishes like risotto (hulled / hullless barley includes the bran so there is more fiber than pearl which is considered to be a refined grain). Barley also happens to have more beta glucan in it compared to other grains like oats - so overall it's been a great shift for my diet.

Hi! I have been eating oat every morning for the past 25 years maybe more. I have never had any problem with my weight. I make a Bircher. I put 40 grams of oats in a bowl with some rice milk or soya milk place it in the fridge and in the morning I add a bit of fruits and that’s it. Easy to eat before going to work. It costs very little!

so, oatmeal with vinegar and maybe black cumin and before you know it, you'll be pure skin and bones! Honestly, I love this. I eat oats several times a week for breakfast, and my favorite is to do savory oats with chili powder, cumin, salt, corn, maybe some black beans, and even a little bit of marmite in it. I'll put some spices like you would add to sausage and call it a bowl of sausage. It sounds weird but it's really good. I also like normal sweet oatmeal with blueberries or whatever. Love the info on this channel!
My father in law ate oatmeal 3 meals a day, with different things added! For breakfast he added some banana and blueberry! For lunch and supper he add peanut butter, or easy over eggs, etc.! He was 5'6" and weighed 135lbs! My friend who's a diabetic was told by his dietician to eat a breakfast with oatmeal!
Hi, Miche. I have an hypothesis for you. The first treatment any doctor recommended to me to lower my cholesterol levels was muffins made with oat bran. That was the state of the science back in the 1980s. The suggested mechanism for how oats lowered cholesterol was that the (soluble) fiber they contained would become entangled with cholesterol contained in food as it passed through the intestine tract, meaning you absorbed less of the cholesterol from the food you ate. I think it does the same other fats consumed in the diet too. As a treatment for high cholesterol it was pretty much ineffective, mainly because the cholesterol the body makes has a far greater impact on cholesterol levels than amounts consumed in the diet. It did lower total cholesterol a little bit but did not lower heart disease or mortality, mainly because it tended to lower both HDLs and LDLs by the same proportion. I would suggest the likely reason that oats can lower energy efficiency is that they cause some proportion of fats in someone's diet to pass straight through the digestive tract. As far as I know, there are two drugs designed to work in that way, Colestyramine and Orlistat. I use Orlistat myself - but only occasionally when I am planning to eat a meal high in saturated fats. Most of the time I want my body to absorb whatever fats I've eaten because they are almost entirely from plants and seafood. So, if my hypothesis is correct, the suggestion in this video to eat more oats should probably come with a caution: oats will reduce the amount of fats in food that the body absorbs, so if you are already being careful to minimize the saturated fats you consume then adding oats to your diet may have some negative consequences.

Oats fill me up and keeps me satiated the whole day. For the amount of food, the level of satiation is off the charts. Having said that, it causes a level of acid reflux like no other food for me. It also makes me sleepy. It makes everything except my stomach feel good.
Thanks for the video. Back in the day, hospitals would put diabetics on an oatmeal based diet as this would reduce their insulin sensitivity. There are several studies supporting those findings so perhaps you could do a video on oatmeal consumption and diabetes?
Great video. I used to do Keto (which worked for a while) and so got into the habit of adding a half avocado to my smoothie every day for lunch. It was a struggle to lose weight. I cut that out, and started eating oatmeal every day for breakfast and kept my walking up. Now finding it a lot easier to lose weight slowly, or maintain it.

Right now I can't prove my theory, but I've been oatmeal obsessed the past week and despite eating too much EVOO, some sugar, and a lot of peanut butter, my fasting blood sugar has come down noticeably.

There is a big difference when it comes to calories in : calories going in your mouth vs calories “absorbed” in your body. Not everything you eat gets absorbed. A 300 calories cake is much “worse” than 300 calories oatmeal, mostly because of how everything is broken down by your digestive system. This is why this calories in vs calories out can be really misleading.
Suggestion: In the past having worked in Audio Recording, I offer a trick for the reduction of the environmental echo you mentioned. Several wheeled Clothing hanger racks with the surplus US Military Wool Blankets thrown over them will greatly help in reducing the echo. Easy to keep out of Frame. Also they are useful in lighting effects by throwing a bed sheet over them and reflecting your light off of them. This can eliminate the spot or ring in the eye effect. The bed sheets of different colours can modify the lights temperature.
Do raw oats also work? I love Bircher muesli but - after years of eating it for breakfast - now really dislike porridge. Excellent work, by the way. I love how you are rigorous in how you treat studies and the data. And know your science....

I have been eating steel cut oatmeal for decades because I just love the taste and texture. By varying the the toppings, I never get tired of it. I do believe it is key in maintaining a consistent weight over time.
Can you please share some recipes? I burned myself out years ago and haven’t tried in a decade. I need the beta glucan for my cholesterol and def. for my weight 😊. I love all berries, most fruits, nuts, seeds, cinnamon etc. how do YOU not get sick of it? 😢. Help ..
@@PotatoChipsterFrenchFryHipster For an occasional break from berries or such...try mixing in a chocolate or vanilla flavored protein powder. Upping protein is helpful for weight loss anyway and it scratches that itch for something sweet.
So glad I discovered you! Love your background and platform. I get nowhere ever discussing nutrition with docs, or whomever...You have the creds to sort out the claims and contradictions it seems. Im vegan and eat probably too many nuts for protein, otherwise my meals are low in fat. Question is, i want to incorporate 300 calories of oatmeal into my intermittent fasting 12/14 hours. I stop eating at 2:00 and wonder how I can incorporate 2nd portion without giving up veggies, tofu and beans. Any ideas or places to turn would be so greatly appreciated. TIA.☯️☮🕉

Love my oats ..been eating them for over a decade.. after my doctor wanted to give me a hand full of meds to take every day for high BP, cholesterol and climbing A1C. .My go to oat meal formula has been modified over the years, but basically boils down to 1/2 cup of Oats...all other ingredients are optional.. For me adding a couple of heart healthy options. like making it with a concentrated Rose Hip/Hawthorne Berry tea ..adding a little Coconut oil and a hand full of blue berry's... then topping it off with a couple of Eggs works for me.. Added 600 mg of Alpha Lipoic Acid, to reduce A1C. and seems to be working beautifully. 67yo , no meds, feelin good....BP 135/75, COL 210, A1C 5.7 Oh, one last thing ...Sworn off all refined seed oils 2 years ago and never looked back..
I've been avoiding oatmeal because I have heard the opposite. Videos saying oatmeal will spike blood sugar and therefore not help with weight loss. I am going to add oatmeal to my diet and give it a try. Thank you for the video

I know there were also some bio-assimilation differences depending on how well-cooked the oats were. 100 calories of cooked oatmeal converted more effectively than uncooked oats.
Great channel. I found this after hearing about the whole "OATzempic" diet. I tried my first drink and did end up adding some frozen fruit to make it more tolerable. But tbh, it's not the best tasting. I found myself wondering if instead I could just eat a bowl of oatmeal? (Which I love, but tbh I usually use milk and add a bunch of sugar. Lol.) You answered my question and then some. I feel like I probably would prefer doing as you suggested & eating a cooled bowl with blueberries 🫐. (Since apparently that's beneficial as well). Will now be checking out more of your videos. ❤
Great stuff Doc. However, when quoting something like "adding 200 calories of oats" can you state the intake frequency as well? Is that hourly, daily, weekly additions of "200 calories of oats"? Did every study use the same frequency?
I recently added a decent amount of oats into my diet. I have a small serving of steel-cut oatmeal with breakfast (150 calories, pressure cooked in the Instant Pot, the recipe produces 6 servings) and a baked oatmeal to end the day (225 calories for a piece, the recipe produces 9 pieces). Both have blueberries in them too, and I top them with yogurt and/or peanut butter, just for reference. I also walk a lot. I was 10 pounds away from my ideal body weight for the longest time, after having lost a significant amount of weight initially. These last 10 had been a constant struggle for me for a few months, as my TDEE lowered to a point where producing a 500 calorie deficit per day just left me starving and prone to binges. I instead eat about 10-15% below my estimated TDEE now, with the added oats and walking, and I've seen fat finally start to melt off. 7 more pounds to go now. It helps that I absolutely love the taste of oats and really enjoy when it comes time to eat them. I really believe in oats and walking for weight loss and maintaining a healthy bodyweight. I'd go so far as to throw nonfat or low-fat yogurt (regular or strained) in there too. Thanks so much for the wonderful video and though my own evidence is anecdotal, I'd like to add it to the pile. At this rate, I'm just going to be made of oats, yogurt, nuts, and blueberries one day. And that's fine by me.

I’ve struggled with my weight and have been doing low carb but I do find plain oatmeal works well with my body. I add a tbsp of ground flax and chia seeds. When I eliminated oats my weight loss stopped and I felt puffy. So a common sense amount of oatmeal per day/every other day works for me.

To be honest, I love oatmeal better than regular cereal. Sometimes in the morning, I'd have it with dark cocoa powder and some sugar substitute-- any healthful ingredient that's gonna wake me up; and before bed, I'd have it with cinnamon and sometimes with pumpkin puree-- any healthful ingredient that's gonna knock me out.

I have 2 questions for u: 1) If i recall right: 200 calories(60 gramms) of oat give u all the benefits u can get, and any more doesnt give u any more benefit. 2) Do u think there is a big difference between whole grain oat and oat flakes? Macro and mirco nurtient wise probalby not, but vitamin wiese since the oats are being treated with quite high temperatures. Thx in advance!

If I take a multiple vitamin formulated specifically for vegans (Complement Plus-no affiliation) after breakfast, should I put some fat (e.g., walnuts) in my oatmeal w/ berries to help me absorb my fat soluble vitamins, or is that unnecessary since oats contain a wee bit of fat?
Thanks for your support! Oats actually have quite a bit of fat, and should be all you need for best absorption. However walnuts are great for you so I say do what you enjoy most.
8:06 Another challenge with government studies of nutrition is that the government also spends a lot of money supporting those same industries. If a government study came out truly pointing out a problem with beef, milk, eggs, corn, etc., those industries would be hitting "speed dial" to their Congressman before the ink had dried on the study.
I have oats for breakfast because they taste great. The fact they’re good for you is simply a bonus.
Hi Miche! I can't eat fruits because of MCAS and HI. So many of us post C19 infection, or those with EDS can't but want to be healthy. Would love, love, love an episode on how to deal with Histamine Intolerance through diet and still maintain health! Very important for those with LC, too. Also, because of HI have chronic LPR. Have been 100% plant based for years and years but it's not helped with LPR, it's actually hindered when eating some foods - especially plants.

This is AWESOME! So...300 calories of rolled oats is about 1 cup dry....two servings daily. I love oats....I buy the 50# bag (I get organic cheaper per pound than grocery store conventionally grown that way!) I'm going to bump up my consumption....I typically eat 2/3 cup dry measure daily...(I don't eat it dry) so today I'm going to start bumping it up to 1 cup! Yeee haw! 😁

This video was super informative. With High fat low carb getting all the craze these days, its good to know that there are healthier, more sustainable, and affordable ways to lose weight. I love quick oats with almond milk and some blueberries. Since i'm sensitive to sugar, i add a little monkfruit sweetener to my daily bowl of oats. one question though- is there any difference between rolled oats vs. steel cut oats vs. quick oats. I love the convenience of quick oats, but not sure if microwaving it for a minute makes it bad for you.

Can you do a video on the difference between quick, rolled, steel cut, and whole oat groats? For whatever reason, I feel so hungry just a couple hours after eating rolled or steel cut oats but oat groats leave me full for 4-5 hours. Sometimes longer. Could it be glycemic control? Are nutrients oxidized and lost after rolling or milling? Thank you

Curious about this ... since Oat has been my go-to breakfast for decades and since I started my weight loss journey, it has been my dominant source of carbohydrates. (by virtue of not eating much carbs in other meals). It turned out that losing weight was not as hard as I had feared. I've lost 15 kilo in 1.5 years now - taking it slowly, getting the skin to adapt too. And I didn't even have to skip alcohol (like wine). I just had to do a lot of exercise and skip sugar/white-bread and eat a lot of salad.
Are there good studies about whole Teff, which is what I eat for breakfast every day.
Had oats with apples this morning and savory oats at dinner with veggies.
Half a pound per month is huge if you consider the long term effect. It's 6 pounds a year, a lot of people gain weight at a rate of 6 pounds per year. This would mean that eating oats for breakfast could stop the gradual weight gain that a lot of people experience. And it's a normal breakfast that taste nice with some yoghurt and berries or raisins. Like, have we solved the obesity crisis?
I cant finish a bowl of oatmeal. Ive tried everything, adding everything I like thats healthy. I just get tired and if I try to push myself it just makes me gag. Its not that i dont like em, i like the flavor, i just dont know what it is lol I usually follow the 1 serving amount of 1/2 cup but when I add the same amout to my smoothie I am able to drink the whole thing. I dont get it! I wonder if the oats have the same effect that way? Ive always added oat flour to my drinks and I love making smoothies with it!
Maybe it's the texture? Have you tried making oatmeal with oat flour? Maybe cook it with some apples too, that can change the texture too. Or add a mashed banana?
Great video. Do have good science on glyphosate? I know oats, as well as many other nutritional foods, often contain high glyphosate levels .
Thank you! Do you more mean how glyphosate affects us, or what foods contain it? It’s funny you ask, because I have a pesticide series in the works, but focused on organochlorines! I do plan to look into glyphosates down the line though.
Amazing how many people rely rigidly on calories in/calories out without acknowledging the effect of carbohydrate on insulin levels. You can't eat carbs without raising insulin levels, chronically causing the synthesis of body fat of which 40% is saturated fat.
Was the 200g oats dry or cooked weight in the study? Because 200g of oats being the highest amount of oats that showed weight loss effects, if it were dry oats, is actually quite a lot (5 servings).
It was 50 grams dry oats for the lower amount, aka ~200 calories. Then 100g aka 400 cals for the higher amount. 200g would indeed be a ton!

I make a big pot of steel cut oats beginning of the week and then just take out amount I want and reheat with frozen fruit and a very little bit of maple syrup. Fast and easy each morning so no excuse for sugary cereals and drive throughs.
Does it matter what kind of oats? Does it matter if they are quick oats steel cut oats etc.
In 2020, I wrecked my digestion after losing 15 kg in a few months. For three years, I had trouble with having regular bowel movements. I even tried taking laxatives once a week just to move everything out. I was bloated, it was painful and irritating. But when I started adding 30 grams of oats to my breakfast, I am regular again.
I truly love oatmeal. #1 favorite food and I could eat it every day. But it triggers cold sores for me 😭 I wonder if taking lysine tablets would offset it
For the heck of it (because I have to be gluten free) try gluten free oats to see if you have a hidden gluten issue. Oats don't have gluten, themselves, but OFTEN are contaminated with gluten during processing. Trader Joe's sells gluten free oatmeal for the best price. Bob's Red Mill offers it too.
@@Atheria444 it's the arginine:lysine ratio for me. If I eat alot of store bought bread (for ex, toast every day for breakfast) nothing happens. I did get some gluten free rolled oats though to try!

So interesting. Am I wrong in saying that perhaps the fiber in oatmeal interferes with specifically the intestinal absorption of fats? I eat oats and legumes for every meal of the day, plus many other veggies. However for lunch I somewhat reduce the amount of oatmeal and legumes and that is when I take my fat based vitamins, like Vit D, Saw Palmetto, Liposomal C, and Fish Oil. This to increase the likelyhood that those vitamins will be absorbed from that meal. Also about your comments of 200 to 300 calories of oatmeal, I guess you mean that is per day, right? From my Cronometer app that appears to be 2/3 to 1 pound of oatmeal a day. That is a lot of Oatmeal per day! Thank you!
As a former diabetic, I'm have been struggling to switch to a vegan diet. But in order to get enough calories, I've been trying to introduce more oats. However, I found that oats raised my blood sugar too high, and my triglycerides were a little high as well. I've heard endless great things about oats. But I'm finding I probably need to avoid them completely.
It’s funny that I was definitely leanest when eating oats daily in homemade granola (atop nonfat Greek yogurt with fresh blueberries). Smitten Kitchen has an awesome granola recipe with pepitas, almonds, shredded coconut and oats. Now I’m making a batch of granola ASAP.
I think certain KZheadrs give oatmeal a bad rap. But they arem=n't that specific about what oatmeal they are eating. Is it prepackaged oatmeal wit flavoring and sugar? Do they add their own sugar, honey, agave, etc. And is it Instant Oats or the Old Fashioned oats (because that makes a diffence). Old fashioned oats do not bump you insulin levels by much.
Does it matter what kind of oats you eat? Steel cut, rolled, instant...?

I did this high carb, low-fat diet with oatmeal in my mid 40's and lost a ton of weight. Stopped doing this and now in my 50's cutting out carbs, and eating salads, so hard to see any progress.
What is your opinion on higher protein for weight loss? Also is it good to eat extra protein when aged 70+ ?
I can totally agree on that! Weight loss must not be rocket science and with easy cheap steps you can get a lean physic and stay healthy and hopefully live long 😊💪🏼
I heard you imply more than once that a high fat diet causes weight gain. I think my diet is high fat (lots of avocados, seeds, nuts, and coconut), but I feel healthy and light. I guess I'll search your videos for the topic.

Please do not add maple syrup or anything sugary to your oatmeal porridge. A cup of oats, a cup of milk, a cup of water, a small pinch of salt. Put in a saucepan on the cooker. Bring to the boil. Simmer on low for 3 minutes. Leave until cold. Pour a little cold milk on top. Enjoy.

I just ate 1 1/2 cups of cooked oatmeal, and I am very full. I love oatmeal, but was eating 1/3 cup dry oats cooked, which did not hold me. Hoping this experiment will work.

Does it matter which kind oats? Steel cut vs. instant, or old fashioned… 🤔
I equate 'instant' oats to candy...and they hit the blood stream way too fast/easily (carb/sugars). Less processed the better.... taste better too.
