Back when this movie was made, Pixar was one of the most innovative and creative studios in the world. They were pushing art and technology at the same time; their originality was unrivaled, and their expertise was cutting edge. If only it could have lasted.
not with crude children cgi movies they choose to make from the beginning
Nothing lasts for ever.
I think they still are ahead of everyone!
Saying Pixar hasn't lasted but, we have studios like Illumination and DreamWorks relying on fart jokes and gross out gags to keep themselves in business
After seeing Soul they definitely still are
I can’t imagine the hardware need to make such a good looking movie for its time. Keep in mind this was nearly 20 years ago
The rendering machine they used must have costed atleast $100K!
The main machine used by the animators were SGI Octane workstations, then all the rendering was done on a much more powerful server that's connected to every machine in the office. Same thing was done for previous Pixar films actually, the hardware just progressed over the years. I have an Octane myself, not one as kitted out as theirs but it can be upgraded to what they used. These days the hardware and software used by animators is much cheaper and more accessible to the general public, so independent artists can be hired for projects like a film or tv show. I'm not entirely sure how the Pixar office is setup nowadays, but I'm sure all the employees would still be connected in the same manner as they were 20 years go. It's pretty neat how some procedures change and some stay the same. If it ain't broke, don't fix it :)
Software was far more problematic, as none of the off-the-shelf stuff was suitable for this work. Lots of custom-written solvers and proprietary tools.
fun fact: lotso (the bear villain from toy story 3) was meant to be the villain in the first toy story, but the animators still didnt have the technology to make a realistic fur. monsters inc was the first real step in that sense, hence lotso could finally be used after that.
My favorite Pixar movie. I have always been fascinated by animation, and I had this movie as a kid. I swear that I watched the special feature behind the scenes dvd more than the actual movie. 😂🤣
Ditto, 2:12 scared me as a kid though.
@@csbattlebot Same for whatever reason
FR, I can’t draw for Jack but watching the process of the animation fascinated me at a young age and hearing how much time and dedication was put into the final product with the technological constraints of the time. It’s crazy seeing how far Pixar has come since then. There’s a magic seeing how they pushed the technology to its furthest limit to achieve ageless films
This is my favorite Pixar film too. (And my favorite movie in general too) I remember being blown away when I first saw the behind-the-scenes stuff about Monsters Inc on KZhead at age 14. (I was born in 2001, nearly five months before Monsters Inc. came out)
Mine too!
half of the budget is sullivan
It's so cool to see how the earlier Pixar films tackled challenges like hair, water, clothes- and went on to solve even more daunting tasks, such as having a character who is a light source in Inside Out, or figuring out the volumetric characters in Soul. Love how Pixar's technology serves its storytelling
I really loved these features on Disc 2 of the original 2-disc set. I've still got it, and I'll keep it till the day I die. You get to see every step in the creative process, from paintings illustrating the original story treatment to storyboards of like the third or fourth draft of the screenplay, to beautiful conceptual artwork of Monstropolis, a look at the Pixar Studios workplace, footage of the voiceover work, everything. It's interesting how embroiled everyone at Pixar got with this project, and it's like they knew it was going to be a hit _because_ of all the work they put into it.
sad thing all these bonus features is almost gone today for new films cause its almost only streaming, not a film on a disk with collected bunus features.
@@ultimatehistoryofcgi8897 That's why I haunt the thrift stores and pawn shops in my area. Also the library. Just today, I found a big box packed with DVDs and Blu-Rays at a local thrift store. Action movies, family movies, and the entire run of the series 24, with Kiefer Sutherland. "How much for this box of DVDs?" I asked the sweet old lady volunteering there. "Uh, five dollars." And the box wasn't completely full, so she let me fill it to the top. And they had a brand new giant empty CD/DVD book for one dollar. Amazing day!
it's so weird seeing mic without arms
Yup
Mike*
*_Mic_*
A green mic.
Still creative
This is actually a great education video for kids and adults to learn how the movie was made.
This is so mind blowing. How cool
1:32 I remember this exact part of the feature scared the daylight out of me as a kid. I actually screamed and begged my parents to shut it off. Just the way that Test Sully moved was so creepy
Imagine Finding that Mf in your room, they were succeful with him
Can't be as scary as 2:14-2:22. This bastard used to give me nightmares as a kid. Those eyes, that toothy smile and that dance still haunt me.
I'm sorry, but what you wrote made me laugh. 😂
It's amazing how this movie is over 20 years old but still holds up and looks great to this day.
dude i cant believe they made 2001
such a masterpiece
And the spinning Sully at the end lollll
It's a masterpiece for its time. I have a huge soft spot of for animation and stop motion films. Monsters incorporated is one of the top animation movies of all time. I really appreciate Pixar studios and the whole voice cast for this film, I adore this movie and always will. The most beautiful thing about all Pixar films is the hidden message behind each one of them and I think this movie has the best one
I would like to have an actual sequel to Monsters Inc not just a prequel. The 2001 animation on that movie holds up much better than Monsters University
This is one of the most interesting videos on youtube. I love the time and effort they put into Sullivan's hairs, I could only imagine how painstaking it was to get something they were happy with. Every single hair had to move in a natural way, it's utterly amazing. Thanks for sharing this
I actually think Mike looks cool without arms
Same
Imagine if they kept the armless Mike in the final film.
I like him better with arms. When I watched the test with him without arms at 0:00-1:07, I was looking at his legs more then his face and with arms it's easier for me to focus on his face.
Yah it looks like he could've been a good scarer
That fur is impressive.
Sully looks good in glasses tbh
He looks like me
Reminds me of Beast from X-Men. 😂
6:07 His hair turned into a sticky bomb
It's always interesting to see how it was done
Pixar in 2001: First time using simulation. Pixar today: Simulation Terminated!
Everytime I watch one of these featurette's from a Pixar Film. I always feel like I'm listening to Scientist who know what they're talking about in a sublte documentary. And I love it
1:45 This Sully looks very creepy. Looks ginormous compared to Final Sully.
There’s something so original, creative, and brilliant about this movie. It holds up even today. I loved it as a kid and now my toddler absolutely loves it
@5:20 LOVE THE GREEN IN HIS FACE
Ngl, I kinda wished they went with those colors. About the mixture of blue, light green, teal and purple looks very eye catching and appealing.
6:13 His hair gave up on life
this early version of Sulley kinda looks like Johnny from Monsters University, just a few traits here and there similar to that model
The fact she wasn't wearing clothes in the running shot 💀
Sullivan looks kinda cute with glasses lol
I agree ☺
"Proportions, Johnson, proportions"
3:34 Doduo who murdered his brother

Only ppl who know pokemon will understand this comment
I freaking remember this from a DVD watching this part like O.M.G :O
my food in the microwave looking though the little winndow 8:48
Reading while my microwaves going
@2:00 the color scheme for Sully should have been the finial one!
i wouldn't mind Mike without arms
I yes haha
Then he wouldn't be able to get his hands stuck in the, "this office is now closed", scene. :o
Ngl as a kid I used to watch disc 2 of monsters inc more than disc 1. So this is all too familiar to me 😂😂
Same
I was like that with most Pixars I owned for a while
0:01 Those clones of Mike and Sully looks like their Ancestors from a long time ago.
3:13 Tribble gymnastics, let's go!
they also missed one thing in the development of the movie sully was called johnson as heard in the early tests
This is when Pixar movies were actually GOOD, now they aren’t.
Too bad this isnt the full original video from the 2nd disc
Just say dynamic hair and the animators and system tool team will get Vietnam flashbacks
5:06 Run Suillivan
We definitely don't need "scary feet" to find out more about of making a living and becoming friends who they scare.🎯🚪👁👹👧🏻🎥💻☀️ Stay safe everyone!
Fur physics was definitely ahead of its time back in the early 2000s
Mike Wazowski originally had no arms but would use his legs to clutch onto things and Sullivan was originally called Johnson and had tentacles but was retooled to Sulley and the tentacles were scrapped as the they would distract the audience and Mike Wazowski with no arms was scrapped due to technical difficulties
They did this crap in 2001. Imagine what they will be doing for 2021.
Sully looks creepy at first
Alt title: DAMN, IT'S CURSED AF
Imagine Cgi use fur for Mammals too
You know who could have been good additions for the commentary in this feature? They could have included the supervising animators for the movie Rich Quade and the late Glenn McQueen when he was still alive during the making of the DVD. So after the three introduce themselves, they could have added "And we're here with..." then McQueen says "Glenn McQueen" and then Quade says "And Rich Quade the supervising animators of Monsters Inc." I just thought maybe they would include the supervising animators for this feature or maybe they would replace two of the voices in this feature. If that's the case, who would you replace with McQueen and Quade?
Did this oddly stumble into anyone elses recommended?
Music:Randy Newman(2001)
I can't find this video in Latin Spanish, I remember watching it when I was a child 🥺💔
This Is Uncalled Period Old Era Version 2003 Northern Utah Region (In My World)
8:09-8:25 That's not simulation, that's grooming.
It’s test and tune
6:00 fundillo
Why is sully wearing glasses 😂
0:46 who’s this
A Sulley prototype
I have a joke The title actually means scroll down so you know what it was called before it was release Nearly Not close Still not close Still not even close There well go the original tittle is down here🔽 🎶monsters evil incorporated.🎶
Worth it!
I know its an old movie, but that snow looks and acts like wet beach sand.
That's basically snow
fuurrrrrrrrrrrrrr
