Stand Out Fit In - ONE OK ROCK [Cover by Derivakat]

Lately, it’s been too much all day, words shot like a cannon at me…
During AAPI Heritage Month, I’ve reflected a lot on my experience growing up as a mixed race Asian-American and how AAPI people are often faced with double standards and harassment for engaging with our culture and just being who we are. In the last year, hate crimes against AAPI people have dramatically risen but we are spoken over and our issues are weaponized so often that it’s exhausting. As we close out AAPI Heritage Month, I will ask you to please be an ally to AAPI people, and support and uplift us every day of the year.

And I cam relate to Mask so I like the song more than roadtrip but overall I respect your opinion and I don’t want to fight :)

  • Dang this hits kind of close. Throughout my whole childhood, I was scrutinized for being "too Asian" or "too whitewashed". Growing up as Asian American was always rough. When I was little, I was made fun of for being "too Asian", whether it be my food, or my clothes, or for the religion I practiced. Kids would say shit like "you have big eyes, for an Asian person", and meaning it as some sort of compliment. People would make fun of foods that my grandma would make, foods that i liked, because it was so different than western food. And as a young impressionable child, it kind of led me to believe that the Asian in me was "bad" or "wrong". There was no one to tell me otherwise, since there was a total of like, 5 Asian families in a 1500+ student school. There was very little Asian representation in my life, no one i saw on television or on the internet looked like me, or seemed like they faced the same problems (save for Nigahiga, that man holds a very close place in my heart cuz of this exact reason). So I just kind of, rejected a bunch of things from my culture? I started calling my Ong Noi and Ba Noi "grandma" and "grandpa" because it made me fit in with other kids, I stopped eating the "weirder" Vietnamese foods so people wouldn't make fun of me, really stopped anything that didn't seem "white". But later on, people started calling me "whitewashed" for the shit that I changed abt myself as a kid. I couldnt pronounce a dish quite right, becasue the last time I said it was in kidnergarden, so i wasnt "really asian". All the shit that i was bullied for as a kid was suddenly "cool" and "cultural" and "i should embrace it". And it made it really hard to find my place. I was either too Asian to be considered "normal", or too whitewashed to be "truly asian". Its really nice to know that a lot of other AAPI people struggle with this, its something I have struggled to deal with in the past, and still struggle with today.

    • don't let anyone toss you around like that bestie! be you! there's no harm on being you, and if anyone doesn't like that, why should you care? how about _they_ try to pronounce eastern dishes? how would they feel if you make fun of them for saying it wrong? right? you should make your perspective clear to everyone, how you don't like being 'too asian' or 'too whitewashed' like bro lets be honest, who cares? be you bestie, BE YOU.

    • Humans aint it, everyone is different not only on looks but also on how they think. Its almost impossible to completely destroy discrimination. The most is supperesed it, making it well received so 'that' kind of people need to hide their thought, and even then its still hiding, they can and will still be biased. So lets just hope quickly almost everyone atleast have an open mind.

I couldn’t see anything or hear anything. After a while I would snap back out of it. This really scared me so we went to a doctor and I was put on some medication. This medication didn’t really work as I was still having them, so they put me on different ones. They worked well, but I started getting vivid nightmares as I would go to sleep. It would take multiple attempts to get to sleep without having them. So we went back and went on different meds. These ones worked but they gave me an increased appetite. I was eating more than I needed to and my grandparents thought I was just eating because I wanted to. I couldn’t help it. They would tell me to go outside and that I could use the exercise. I was also getting bullied at school for it. I tried explaining it but it just gave the bullies more grounds on which to bully about. Today, I’ve been seizure free for about 3 years and no more medication. Things have started going back to normal and I’m glad that I had some really supportive friends and family that comforted me and helped me through the toughest time of my life. This song is great and I’ll listen to it everyday.

    • Honestly, I feel the same. When I was in primary school I was close to my homeroom teacher, and so was a group of classmates. They often bug the teacher and follow her 24/7 (not joking). I was part of her little tuition gang so it would mean that I get to spend more time with her than the group. One day I was minding my own business when someone from the group of classmates started to argue with me. She was screaming so loudly and I'm here just _kalm_. Still tho, I'm not sure what we were arguing about, but it felt connected to one reason I discovered only today. She was jealous of me able to spend time with the teacher more than the rest. Another reason was probably because I acted differently compared to the rest. I don't talk a lot. I limit the number of friends I can have (I'm introvert-ish and I like to be alone sometimes). When I do talk, I talk what I want to talk about (but I don't cross any boundaries). I was raised by a loving mother who allowed me to have freedom in what I do. Oh and, another quite amusing reason, I was taller than her crush. I'm the odd ball of my class because of my height. Most of my family are tall, so I got my genes there. However, Asians are considered to be short, but I'm not :p Over the years I start to appreciate my height, still rocking it with the appreciation of my height! I guess the point of telling my story here is that no matter how you act or look, there's always people out there who would attack you for it. I'm here to tell you that you're unique no matter what. Screw what other people think about you. You're amazing for who you are :)

It really sends a message as a whole: on gender, race, and sexuality standards set by society. As someone in the LGBTQ+ community, I could really relate to the song. Paired with your amazing vocals, and I was absolutely in love. Thank you so much for this! ❤💛💚💙💜❤💛💚💙💜

  • I'll be honest: When I hear people sing or talk or I see the art, whatever they look like becomes of little matter. And while I do care for looks, when people show passion, such judging topics like race, gender, heritage, religion, sexuality? Are they that important? They are part of you, and therefore a crucial part of you, but also not the only part of you, because you are more than that. Things that people are judged for are never the only things that make the great person who they are. It shouldn't be that way. It hurts, from an outside and inside perspective. Honestly, the thought of ever seeing you, Derivakat, differently, just for your heritage never crossed my mind. You are equal to me as a human, like everyone else, and a talented inspiration to me as an online influencer who's content I enjoy. However I do know that others have not the current open-mindedness to see this beyond accent and skin colour, and I absolutely stand against the hate. I support culture diversity, not discrimination. We are all equal, and when we fight for rights we are to fight for the rights to equality because we do not raise one above the other. Everyone is loved. Everyone is valid. Everyone is accepted. Everyone is equal. That is where we want to be. No, this is not communism. It's fairness and a good moral compass. Love each other, we're all struggling and we're all worth it. Nevertheless this was an amazing song. Thank you for never ceasing to create outstanding, beautiful and heartfelt music! We look up to you and appreciate you for all you do! It's been a stressful year, and a messily beautiful year, but all the same, I hope you are well Derivakat! P.S. If anyone feels that I expressed myself wrongly - please do tell me, when I state my opinion I do not wish to sound like I'm trying to go against supporting minorities, and I never wish to offend anything. I am willing to edit this comment if need for rephrasing is present. Take care of yourself - Happy AAPI Heritage Month, Happy Pride Month!

  • this song, this cover of it, and the intent behind the cover are incredibly meaningful to me. in a predominantly white school, i was held to a standard of constant success. academic prowess was supposedly just part of "my people," so of course i did well, but my doing well, and my presence in the community, was just another example of asians stealing opportunities from "real" americans. perfection was simultaneously expected of me and abhorred when i obtained it. on top of that, being asian in general seemed like a condemnation. i grew up seeing my grandparents mocked for their accents, my few asian classmates nicknamed "made in china" or slurs, my asian friends avoided or violently confronted in the streets as "terrorists," my little brother used by his friends as a debate topic. we could never make the people around us happy because our existence was a source of discontentment. it was impossible to color in their lines when those lines were impossible to find. stand out, fit in, indeed. it's better now, thankfully - i have good friends who respect and value me as a multifaceted human, just like them - but it's still hard to think about. it's even harder to think that in some people's eyes, i am unworthy of being on this planet at all because of my race, and that awful things have been done to so many people on that basis. sending love to anyone else who has struggled with their racial identity, who has been hurt by racism, who has seen someone hurt by or lost someone to racism. your contributions to this world and your emotions and pain are just as valuable and meaningful and important as anyone else's. your voices more than deserve to be heard.

The week before the end of the School year, My “Friends” kicked me out of the friend group saying that I “Framed” another girl, When she hit me on the head and stole my backpack, They always back talked me saying I’m fat, I dress weird, I need to tan more, And they would always brag about their families or what they have. They couldn’t accept me for me and then text me? That’s messed up. Even though it hurts, There are way more classes. *I’m not going to say what I did to myself for privacy reasons, But If you’ve felt this and see someone else struggling with this, Go say “Hi” or ask if they’d like to hang out with you. • I love that you did a cover of this song! As an Asian European I can also relate to being bullied, teased and all that BS. It’s just not right. I hope that everyone does well in life and make the most of it ilyasm

  • Being an Asian myself, I remember once when I went to America for summer school, even if most people are nice, I can still feel the hostility among friends and families over there. And seeing our race getting hate on terrified me. It’s gonna be one of my biggest fear to face when I decide to move in in the future. This song hits really hard especially it’s a cover by an amazing musical artist u adore. Means the world to me, thank you so much derivakat and standing up for Asians ♥️♥️

  • I've been listening to One Ok Rock for YEARS and this is one of the most beautiful covers i've ever heard. This is one of my favorite songs by them as well, the meaning runs so deep and so many people relate to the message. Thank you so much for this, you have no idea how much it means to hear such an influential person bringing a song like this to so many people who may not have heard it.

  • ...This is something I deeply resonate with; both as a heavy emo (though I don't always look it) and neurodivergent. The "Good girls don't fight" line especially since I am a girl and I do fight. Have been since I was maybe five and I'm 21 now. Edit: I have been hurt severely by my own classmates because I didn't 'fit in', I was just the oddball neurodivergent girl in the back corner who always came into every class carrying a book and was too... Soft, Ig. Choir was the place I could be myself. Same with the one drama class I took. So this just resonates with me so much.

    • I know this is ten months old but I find this so relatable I can't leave it alone. I'm also neurodivergent and YES. I'm not so much of a fighter but I definitely am that one oddball kid that sits in the corner with a book while everyone else is "paying attention". I also do really enjoy drama classes :D Love this song a lot.

  • I used to listen to this song a few years ago, I didn’t feel like I ever fit in with my surroundings and this song helped me cope with those feelings. Cut forward to now, where I’m a part of the MCYT community and such, and I come across Derivakat and her music along with all of these amazing content creators. The mcyts themselves, the animators and the songwriters. The whole community has helped me feel like I do fit in somewhere, I’ve made friends over common interests of certain youtubers, and hearing Derivakat sing this song just brings back those memories and realize how great this community can truly be. So thank you, I guess is kind of what I’m getting at :]

  • Personally, while I’ve never really taken things at heart, it still sometimes hurts to see people call me by stereotypes for being Asian American. I often times don’t care since I can tell it’s a joke but it sometimes gets to the point where the only type of humor people can make when talking with me is about my race and it just gets too far. Not really sure where I’m headed with this, amazing song tho!

    @meilin3222@meilin32222 жыл бұрын
    • Maybe talk to them about it? Like tell these people how it makes you feel when thats all the "jokes" they want to make around you. Or talk to a trusted adult. It's just a suggestion. Stay safe!

I should be happy if this is my life, right? Don’t listen to what they sad. If they are disappointed, be proud of yourself for who you are. No matter which races, religions or any sexuality you. I love you and I will support you and accept you forever :D Don’t let their words put them down! They’re jealous because you’re perfect for being YOURSELF! So don’t change who you are and do what you have to do to make yourself comfortable :D Love you everyone and please have a nice day/evening/night and stay safe!!
