Was almost going to agree. But it still has a fucking stupid glas back 🤢 . Had 3 phones with and every single has the back panel cracked. Last cracked while in the pocket outside working and a tool banged against it. All just to please reviewers so they can rave about it Want Aluminum or plastic back

it's funny how old features that everyone deemed unnecessary or impractical are the same things that make this phone so great now. phone companies have taken away so many basic features it feels weird to have them now

This is the most beautiful phone I've seen in a while! The design of this phone is the perfect contrast to the flashy, vulgar and tasteless phones from other brands, which somehow people got used to them being so kitsch. No idiotic notches, no stove like looking cameras, no unnecessary huge sizes, no exterior colors designed to impress children, just a simple, elegant design, with stereo speakers and 3.5mm jack. Superb!

Love watching your videos. Keep up the great work guys 👌. A few other things that have changed from phones back in the past: remember when instruments that phones had were advertised..?...things like compass, gyros, some even had altimeters and barometers to help with weather apps and hiking apps! I mean I love Android a lot, I've only ever used android, and had lots of different ones over the years, just, every maker hasn't got standard requirements, it's open source, and although this makes for such amazing tech and software leaps and bounds, it's very exciting, that's also in some small ways that lets it down for some reason or other. Perfect example are phones I've known people to buy, only to discover that although it's got GPS and can use Google maps, it's useless for hiking and geocaching they do as it doesn't have a compass in them! I've got one of the Moto G9 powers, and it doesn't have a compass either...some star gazing apps won't operate and at times Google maps can find me but has no idea which way is north or west or which direction I'm facing, and I'm having to walk around a street in places like London to discover my pointer, is just going to be backwards or I won't know which way an intersection is lol. So as phone companies go running off and creating loads of wonderful and expensive tech like great cameras and better screens with better nits and speed than the one before, the focus of more practical and cost effective improvements fall away. Tech industries only ever just build to what people want and basically just pander to what the general public want and what reviewers and tech folk are pointing out....so pretty much it's customer driven wants and likes. Cameras, screens, materials that don't collect finger marks, water resistance are features that now dominate what comes out of these factories now. Don't get me wrong I think they absolutely remarkable and needed, just, would be nice to be able to purchase devices in the future where not just what the nit strength is but what instruments they packing to so that I'd have a better more informed choice if it would suit me. Now of course I'm not saying they must pack these with more and more, just simply, not to forget about some of those little features, and to be sure to have spec sheets widely available and where reviewers note also what they don't have. Not a rant 🙈 just a market observation. Thanks again for your videos they awesome

Yep, the xperia 5ii is currently in the lead in this category in my opinion, but ASUS hopping in is very much welcomed. Wish the design was better with a micro SD slot, but that why the xperia 5 ii is better
However, it will not stand out. Many people might look at the design, see that it's a plain affair, and not consider the phone at all. That, is the unfortunate truth.
This camera setup is literally what people have been asking for: "stop with the useless 2MP macro lenses and invest that money somewhere else on the phone"
True. I also feel that zoom camera on smartphones aren't that necessary. A smartphone zoom camera is never that good and if you want real zoom you'll have to buy a professional camera.
@@ahsan.v8 i don't share this opinion, having a three/five times or 10 times optical zoom is sometimes helpful and Huawei Zoom on the P40 Pro+ or Samsung S21 Ultra is very good but yes *if necessary* I also think the zoom camera could be dropped, however what in my opinion can not be dropped it's the wide angle lens, even if the photos are complete bad quality, you are at least able to do wide-angle shots, and even the worst wide angle camera is there better than using Panorama Mode
@@ahsan.v8 Yeah, good software to actually use a camera's resolution properly will be always more efficient than a zoom camera in terms of cost. Too bad Samsung doesn't have the best camera software, for the midrange devices at least.
@@ahsan.v8 Nah the ideal setup is 3 camera system with a main one, a 2x or 2.5x telephoto , and an ultrawide with autofocus(for macro). I know why you dont want a zoom lens on phone and yeah the 60x 100x zooms are not practical but a smaller zoom lens can click better potraits. The same effect can't be manipulated by zooming the main camera lens 2x digitally. I have personally experienced the 2x lens potraits turn out to be better than 2x digital zoom potrait on main cam. It seems like the 2x lens aperture and field of view play a role in framing the potrait shots.

At 10:27 the phone's microphones are incredible as how there is such a small difference of you speaking to your professional recording setup microphones and to the phone's microphones.

Excellent review for my wishlist phone. But you missed out on the audiophile capabilities of the phone. This phone has dedicated dual DAC chips, Cirrus Logic CS35L45 capable of doing high resolution audio at 384Khz 32 bit which is insane. I have LG V20 with single dedicated Sabre DAC chip for audiophile grade audio but this one has a dual DAC chip and is perhaps first dual DAC chip fitted phone. You Will be able to tell better. The only thing it misses is a balanced 2.5mm headphone Jack which could have made it a real unique audiophile phone giving the dedicated modern day DAPs a run for the money. Excellent review. I would request to also please cover the audio capabilities of the phone you review, from the audiophile angle. 👍👍👍

Tbh I love how they squeezed everything in a tiny size. There are people like me who wants smaller phones but also in android. There's also people who doesn't care much about the looks as long as its easy to carry and hold.
Most people go for big phones since there is no other choice, while most women use their men's salary to buy the iPhone which isn't that big.
Even I want smaller phones for a better one-handed experience...

A phone that fulfills all your needs and most of the desires. I m using zenfone 5z for the last 2 years without any issue. I find zenfone 8 to be the perfect upgrade.
Samsung should put the notification light in the bottom. My biggest reason I haven't upgraded is I don't want to lose that and my headphone jack and Iris Scanner and heart rate scanner and Micro SD cards and so many little things

I wish I could have true boomsound speakers on a phone still. just frustrated that modern phones make so many concessions, especially for features we took for granted a just few years ago

Just got mine here in Brazil and I am really impressed with the overall quality, specs and price. I wanted a smaller phone that didn’t compromise on specs and performance. Coming from my second Asus (Zenfone 3 zoom), can’t say I’m disappointed. Stellar job from Asus. Don’t think it looks boring or prototype like. It’s elegant and discreet. Some people like to show that they spend this or that much money on their phones, but not me. Cheers.
I actually like the matte black back a lot. I'm not a fan of the fingerprint magnets most phones have these days and end up slapping a case on them to avoid the fingerprints and glare.
They took the name of “Zen” to a pleasant surprise in design. Its sleek, but not too rounded. Basic, but not too plain. Packed with value, but not too pricy. But even if you wanna spice it up, just customize it with a cool case or some nice themes. Although im kinda stuck with Apple due to account reasons, I probably would have thought to get this phone since its cheaper.
All of my friends have iPhones, so I really wanna stick with them. Otherwise, I’d definitely buy.
Oh and if Dbrand sells skins for the Zenphone 8, you can slap a nice skin on it. So the basic design on the back is a nice touch because if you want a nice design on a phone, you'd be compelled to leave the phone as is leaving it vulnerable to cracks when you drop it which can be mitigated by a skin like from Dbrand or a case.

Nice phone but the whole reason I bought the Zenfone 6 is because it had flagship specs and character for cheap. I liked that it was stubborn, keeping the headphone jack, and no notch. And I liked how they decided to put a massive battery in it so you don't need to EVER worry about saving battery. It was a wonderful slightly imperfect brick, big, heavy, purely functional.

I'm using this to watch this video right now, It really is a good choice for someone looking for something more understated and elegant. It feels weird at first but I think it work out for me. Unfortunately I accidentally dropped it from quite a height. Now bottom of the screen crack and so keyboard are bit dodgy.
I really don't want all the random gimmicks. It's so hard to find a small phone nowadays I'm glad at least one company is doing it. If I was in the market for a new phone, this would definitely be on my shortlist

Yep, it seems to have been reviewed by the wrong guy actually. I love his videos (at least the ones I watch) but Arun doesn't look like someone who's into minimal designs and finishes. That's evident from the finish of his house's floor to the thumbnails of his videos and texts used on his videos.

Yes but with everything else, they should have gone back to an uninterrupted screen and put both speakers in front for an experience no other phone offers in 2021. Honestly that would give this an unbeatable retro charm combibed with new hardware and software inside
@thatCapN Crunch I'm sure you can always forgo using the case they provide for something heavily detailed (though probably not like their teen+20-something-oriented ROK phones). Or the Pixel 6 might serve you well. It's ~US $500 and about as loaded at that price point as anything I can think of... I keep looking at the xperia phones... but they're out of my budget for now (still $800 for the 5 III)... I don't like Samsung's photo processing OR Apple's for totally different reasons (Samsung oversaturates and makes photos lose nuanced details in doing so as they process the info; it can make painting-like vivid sunsets, but they don't look authentic). iPhone does that with skin tones and facial features where suddenly people who are neutral tone and not richly pigmented are golden and tan with color bursting out but mostly stays neutral for scenery... my issue is that in trying to look oh so sharp it does this oddball crayon-like edging, especially noticeable when there are shadows behind or under that it tries to lighten when there's any detail and the color is pretty uniform but (take plant leaves) might have some brighter spots from light... iPhone cameras (well, the top iPhones) have a lot of potential but the software screws over details of such weird things that it turns a lot of pics into something that looks like it was in a coloring book, not a real object, because of the fake edges and odd shadow handling/oversharpening things that lack features in the real world view of it. Sony stores the raw files and has solid sensors... I think they use Carl Zeiss optics, too, which my most beloved cell phone of all did and it had pictures better than "top" phones 5 years newer just because of the legit lenses and optical zoom (I miss the sound of the thicker but so worth it camera when it would do its zoom down tiny bit by tiny bit and save it as a full file unlike all of these that compress everything so much).
At least they're honest about the high performance mode. I imagine it works like the Asus Armoury crate app on the RoG phones where you can set which apps would automatically activate the high performance mode.
