    • Martina got more direct in response as things evolved and MC became more out spoken about gay marriage and how they were turning women tennis players into Lesbians. Justifiably so, Martina could no longer be diplomatic and hold her tongue. Still handled very professionally, but she wasn't having it.

  • I love Martina. The name itself reminds me of Tennis. The first tennis superstar I ever heard as I grew up, not interested in tennis. Martina Navratilova and the whites of Wimbledon, eternally seared in my memory from the '80s

  • Aside from her great tennis, I've long been impressed with Martina's English. This interview was 15 years from her defection but here she uses phrases like "I didn't suffer authority well". Even as a native English speaker (at age 59) I don't think that phrase would have crossed my mind. She doesn't seem to stumble for words or verb conjugations. I know she spoke English prior to her defection but even immigrants who've been here for a long time sometimes get the verb conjugation wrong

    • That would never happen, but it would be interesting to see her playing with modern equipment, because she was a fantastic athlete. When Graf, Seles, and Capriati emerged with powerful games with new Graphite racquets, Navratilova was in her 30's and still being competitive with teenagers. It would be interesting to see her , Serena, Venus, Graf, Seles, Vika play against each other with modern training and equipment.

  • I remember Vera Czavslavska. The Russians cheated in one of her gymnastic wins, in the 1969 Olympics, when we came back from a tv commercial, and the Russian girl was sharing the gold medal platform with Vera (they had changed the scores to make it a tie for first place, instead of Vera winning alone). When they played the Russian National anthem, Vera looked at the ground, since the Russian tanks had just invaded her country.
