I used to fly the quarter scale nitro planes years ago before everyone was coming out with electric. Anyways, the glo plug I was using then was attached to a battery box via wires. The prop almost sucked the wires in and I tried to grab it before it did. Good news is that I did manage to. The bad news was that I pulled just slightly through the top because I didn't pull up high enough and almost lost my finger. Honestly starting a Helicopter is a lot safer than those damn planes. I've been wanting to get back into it again and maybe switch to the nitro helicopters but I just don't have the money for it right now.

  • This is a good demonstration for the RC Airplane community. We always talk about how dangerous propellers are to your hands and fingers, but very rarely demonstrate just how much slicing power props have...in fact you may get some flak from our community about not taking proper precautions when starting the engine with the prop the way you did. We actually have electric motors that spin the prop to start it that eliminates danger to the fingers/hand

I have a problem with the demonstration itself and his entire lack of safety or thought on anything he did. To add: It's a fine demonstration, but it should be done by someone who at least has a single clue and done for the purposes of demonstration. NOT "for fun" - Because it's a very dangerous way to have a bit of destructive fun and a dangerous thing to implicitly encourage. Not a single squeak about any kind of safety was given at all.

    • You are right but I couldn't keep that airplane nitro engine running without it. I read that means I was running it too rich but even messing with the carburetor it would always shut off and bog down when I took it off.

      @TheBackyardScientist@TheBackyardScientist2 жыл бұрын
    • @@TheBackyardScientist My time to shine .. I collect those things. For a two-needle carburetor, you start on the setting in the manual, which tends to be on the rich side. If you don't have one, something around 1.5-3 turns open is usually fine. Now it depends on whether the engine is new, if it is, you have to break it in first (not only to make it last longer, many, especially cheaper on, won't run right before you did that for a few tanks). How to do that depends on the material combination of the piston and cylinder. You won't encounter cast iron pistons in new engines, so I don't talk about them now. Richen the mixture until it is jumping between two-stroking and four-stroking (you clearly hear it), then lean it until it just runs smooth again ..(especially for ABC-engines) DON'T run them too rich. They need to get to and hold normal operating temperature for a while. After a few tanks you can set them up correctly. Lean them to peak RPM and then back up (in direction of rich) 2-3 clicks on the needle valve. For the idle setting, you can do the "pinch-test". Pinch the fuel line with your fingers and look what it does. If it just stops, it is too lean, if it runs quite a while and speeds up during this time, it's too rich (because while it's starving of fuel the mixture becomes correct for a while). You want it to speed up just a bit and then stop. The idle speed should be set in a way that you can leave it running for 30s or so and then give it full throttle, it should speed up without much struggling (a little bit is normal). The rest is practice, you need to FEEL what the engine needs. I'm still not perfect with it, but you get better.

      @VintageTechFan@VintageTechFan2 жыл бұрын
    • @@VintageTechFan yes, finicky little monsters, but once you do get it running right..., they will scream. Their power band often starts in the 10 thousand range, and they redline at 25k-35k rpms, which explains why they're so powerful. With a very energy-dense fuel and a power stroke every rotation, coupled with high rpms these things can be very powerful. Their torque is abysmal though.

  • When it comes to USB, charging modern devices like phones is actually more complicated than just providing 5V. The old-school USB standard has power at 5v @ 500mA, which is not enough to charge a phone faster than it drains power (it might be enough if you turn off the phone, but it will be slow). Even if the voltage converter can provide more, phones won't attempt to charge properly unless the charger can signal its capabilities to the phone. These days phones use a standard called USB-PD (Power Delivery) to negotiate with the charger different voltages (5-20v) up to 100w, so your generator can definitely charge a phone, but you'll want a USB-PD capable module instead of a standard 5v USB module.
