In the far north of Siberia on the Yamal Peninsular a remote group of nomadic reindeer herders still live in tents whose design may date back thousands of years. The precursor to the modern tipi (tepee), the choom is made of fir poles and has covers of reindeer (caribou) hide. They move every few days throughout the winter so that the herd can gain access to the hidden fields of lichen that lie beneath the snow.

A short research film looking at the making and moving of the traditional choom (also chum or tchum) of the Siberian reindeer herding nomads on and around the Yamaal Peninsular. See

Truth is ... these are some of the strongest people on earth. Especially the ladies.. carrying these heavy wooden tent. Taking it apart. And being able to live in these temperatures. All they got is their family and reindeers. No hospital, supermarket, running water. I trully admire them.
I'm sure of it. Look at their diet, reindeer meat and fat. No chicken nuggets for these warriors.

Imagine how much more ingenuity their ancestors had to have before the advent of iron axes, scissors, and metal knives. This film was so fascinating.
Yes, archaeologists have tried recreating stuff using stone tools. They tried to recreate a 10,000 year old a house at Howick and gave up and used chain saws in the end!
Well, these people, Komi, Khanty and Nenets had already iron tools for thousands of years. It is visible from archaeological excavations.
Kolemjen, that's very interesting.
You can feel that they have really asked which bits of modern technology are worthwhile. The iron stove was introduced in the first half of C19th and is vital in winter, but many leave it behind in the summer as the smoke keeps off the mosquitoes. If you look carefully you can see a plexiglass porthole in one tent, but they crack in the cold so they have given up on them now. They are not stuck in the past but always evolving to survive the harsh environment.
Wow yes, I agree. The techniques and skills were learned through trial and error, but now are just passed down from one generation to the next. I see there is a lot of equipment, but only two woman and one man. What's up with that?
Didn't expect to see a cat ! What an awesome people ! Such fortitude and skill.

Hello. Considering all the hardships and extreme cold, these people got used to these conditions and maybe they will be hurt if they come to the city and live in our style. ❤
I have seen several videos of the different groups of Siberian Natives or Reindeer People who live in brutal cold conditions in their native land to continue their cultural traditions. The severe conditions they live under would be impossible for most people from developed countries to survive in, we are to used to our warm homes, grocery stores and televisions to go without. One has to admire their ability to survive and the skills they have developed to do this.

Hi Charlotte, thank you. Most of the people in most of my videos live like this most of the time. I always try to record things as they are. If not, I always make it clear that I have asked a group to recreate something that is still in living memory. In a fair few of my videos it looks like the women do all the work. In some cases this is true, but in most, especially in the north, roles are separated and because I am focusing on the home it is often the women who you see. IN this case the men are working extremely hard in very cold conditions looking after the herd. They come in late, tired and the women of the choom are very happy to look after them!
