The Fallout show available on Amazon Prime seems to show, at first, a pretty nasty view of human nature. I'm here to argue against that.

  • Thank you so much for jumping to the comments!! There are a couple of visual bugs in the video (expecially with text which is frustrating) but I couldn't fix them because DaVinci crashed on me and I still can't, to this day, reopen the project. I apologize for that!

There is capitalism in the wasteland it's just done by caps. That economic system has been going on for centuries it was just called a bunch of different things before it became capitalized.

  • To me, what saved the show from being a bleak, cynical outlook on humanity was when Lucy told the Ghoul, 'I might become like you, but I'll never *be* like you.' Effectively saying that while she might have to loosen her standards, she'll still be a good person and do the right thing.

  • Now, maybe I'm weird, but i definitely didn't see the "humans are naturally bad" thing from Fallout. Ghoul started off as an actor playing a cowboy hero, but through the conditions of living on the surface for 200 years, he falls back into playing the villain as thats the only other "lens" which he can survive. I feel like this show is utterly drenched in anti capitalism and "our environments form who we become", I was kinda surprised that it didn't have that effect on Shawn at the beginning. Maybe it's just my generally optimistic outlook that made me see this show automatically in such a positive light, I don't know. I definitely see fear as how the systems in place control people, trust is vital for a better world

    • 'Good' and 'bad' are silly words. We wouldn't number in billions today if we weren't cooperative, empathic and intelligent as a species. The thing I took away from this show is the moment leaders of monopolistic corporations agreed that a nuclear war was 'more profitable' than maintaining a status quo. Capitalism makes psychopaths out of us all.

    • The best comment I read about this concerning Andor was: "Why would Disney of all companies publish such a pointed critique of the status quo and enthusiastic endorsement of revolution?" To which someone responded "Do you think they're listening? They don't need to care about what we say, we are nothing to them. Nobody's listening. Nobody. Nobody's listening!"

  • I like how you said that even people in power are products of their own environment. I mean, those in power have no clue what it's like to be on the other side, to have to struggle to make ends meet. If they are raised to believe they and their ilk are far more important, far better than the common plebs, then why would they care about the rest of us? I think it's a little of both -- rugged individualism and the product of our environment -- that defines who we are. I mean, is Ma being harsh on Lucy by implying she's an entitled little Vault girl because her ancestors presumably were able to afford a spot in the Vault while everyone else burnt? Yeah. But from her POV, that's basically what they all are. Doesn't matter if Lucy herself is a good person; to Ma, this girl is just yet one more entitled, privileged little vaultie girl. And yet she, along with the others in Filly, worked together to keep the town running so it's not just 'Oh, fuck you, I only take care of myself.' In other words, it's like, 'I take care of me and my people, if you ain't one of us, fuck off.' Sorry if I make no sense. It's early, and I haven't had coffee yet. xD

  • Ive always loved Ulysses quote at the end of Lonesome Road, Ulysses in general is probably my favorite character in New Vegas. Hes seen so much and has so much wisdom despite his flawed view on the courier's role in the destruction of the divide and the Mojave. But in that worldview there is still a sliver of hope that not even Ulysses himself acknowledges is there until the end if you talk him down from nuking the NCR. He's so well written and it sucks that so many fans write him off as "that guy from the DLC who talks a lot" because they have small attention spans.

  • There's a reason the tag line on the posters for the Fallout TV Show says, "The World Deserves a Better Ending". Which is, admittedly, kind of a joke, but taken at face value it's kind of a statement that these characters have the capacity to choose better than those who came before, even in the wasteland. And to me at least, that is an encouraging thought indeed.

    • Well, real life disasters/war /any 3rd world county really, are pretty much the example you seek. Yes looting and crime and brutality does happen in such scenarios. But even in those scenarios it's not every person doing it all at once- usually it's when the very beginning happens and the novelty of the shock is causing only the most physically desperate and frightened of people to freak out and panic. Most people know this is not the rational action to take unless they actually need to do it to survive right in the moment. Most people know it's going to have repercussions if they loot or do crazy things or rape or rob other people, whether that's from law enforcement or just plain self-defense from the victims attempting to fight back. And most importantly of all, the general ethics of most people regardless of their religious upbringing won't allow them to do these kind of deeds just for their own hedonistic sake. Again some few individuals will, yes... That's why we have crime and unfortunate cruelty in the world from sadists who don't need to be that way. But again it's not the norm, because it wouldn't help our species to function if we all acted that way. We know collectively we like our creature comforts and we only can have those creature comforts such as shelter and good food and clothing if we all work together and just participate in the basics of civilization instead of gung-ho being lone wolves and relying completely only upon ourselves and nothing else. The benefit of being human and not a tiger or something like that, is that we don't all have the same shared physical skills and abilities and strengths and weaknesses. Every healthy apex predator such as a tiger is going to more or less be the same. They can only rely on their claws and speed and teeth. You break a tiger's leg, that tiger is screwed no matter, no matter how big and strong it is. You break a human being's leg though, even if that human being doesn't know a thing about paramedics, that human can call for help and another human can provide medical skills. And if that human doesn't have those skills the human can go out and seek other humans who do have those skills or go out and learn those skills. They can teach the person with the broken leg how to take care of themselves and pass on that knowledge of taking care of injuries to other survivors. This is what makes humans such dangerous but important animals and why we have such an effect on the planet. When we use these powers of community for self healing and communal good we prosper, and when we use these powers for selfish evil and hurtful propaganda, we don't. What human beings need to survive is a healthy bounce both towards individual survival and communal survival. We can't be lone wolves, and we can't be mindless work drones in service to a greater whole, like an ant, at the cost of our own meaningless lives and having to relinquish all freedoms to a caste system. Countries which have this ant mindset above individual comfort and freedom are barbarically cruel and dystopian, but countries that focus only on the individual and provide no sense of collective support whatsoever are also cruel and barbaric, in their own cynical greedy capitalistic sort of way. We in the US see ourselves as "free" because we don't have that respect for collectivism or universal socialist ideals that would more or less help us as a whole. We put it upon the entire responsibility of the individual to take care of the fate of the planet and their own lives, when really it's not a fair possible thing to do. On the other hand, you have countries like communist China or some former communist Soviet colonies, or capitalist theocracies such as Saudi Arabia and post Shah Iran: where you basically squeeze every citizen for the greater supposed "good' and collective identity of the country, meanwhile nobody has truly the right to be their own person making their own choices about things like owned vehicles/who can drive, or style of worship, gender norms and their clothing, and artistic expression. In a nutshell, every system can be corrupt and every system relies on a healthy balance of self-reliance and morally compelled communal cooperation.

  • I always thought Fallout had a strong underlying criticism of capitalism to its story but, being honest, it's just what my (previously) marxist mindset wanted to see. "War never changes", as you correctly pointed out, it's the underlying nucleus. For sure, you got a lot of jabs at the insanely demented corporate greed that was one of the main catalysts of the war, but you don't make an entire worldview of continuous and sustained conflict in the new societies emerging affter the big blast if you're not saying something about human nature that goes further a mere criticism of capitalism. "If war never changes, men will have to" - that's the only conclusion Ulysses can get from all the madness. Because it is in us, conflict is in our nature. Ulysses talks implicitly about a conscious decision we have to make to come to terms and ultimately keep in control our subconscious inclinations, which reminded me of something I red in C. G. Jung's recently: "[the primitive Dionisian animality in us] is both a benefactive and terrible experience from which a civilized and well sheltered humanitty thinks to be safe from... until it unleashes its bloodthirstiness again, which astonishes all the well-meaning, who blame big capital, the weapons industry, the jews or the freemasons for it". Cooperation is in our nature, and so is conflict. The original Fallout had some very good writing about the impact that reality had in the new, organically regenerated societies and cults that emerged between the ruins of modernity. It's easier to see a great cataclysm happening before the end of capitalism does because, ultimately, the proletarian revolution is not going to happen.

  • I wasn't made uncomfortable by the scene where rehabilitation of criminals was made to seem ridiculous. It seemed to me at the time that the problem was a lack of gradient in good and evil was an insurmountable problem, with the vault dwellers being too good and the raiders being too evil. After seeing the rest of the episodes I see the problem is that the vault dwellers are only so good because their freedom is an illusion that keeps them under the thumb of a corporation, and the raiders are so irredeemably bad because they have no structure to trust. It's like both sides have no chance of being genuine individuals. Lucy goes out into the wasteland and turns from white to grey, we see her become more than her cultish programming and develop into her real self. Okay I'll watch the last half of your video now...

  • The main conceit of Fallout, at least in the most recent writing, contradicts this. In the first two Fallouts communities form almost immediately leading to the NCR on the North American west coast. I don’t think that the immediately brutality and desperation of the wasteland would last as long as 200 years in a world where so much literature and science still exists. Then Fallout 3 and 4 comes along and nothing has changed. The show comes along and erases one of the centers of civilization. The variation in tone is a result of the different hands that have been in the kitchen, so to speak. I tend towards hope, as this video does. I think in the long run we’ll be alright

    @LucasDimoveo@LucasDimoveo21 күн бұрын
    • I think those failures are a few things…but the most likely real reason cooperation/moves back toward civilization past a certain point keeps failing is as simple as the makers wanting to keep making post apocalyptic wasteland games that fit the aesthetic and type of fractured society setting that’s been successful so far. I personally think exploring successes in rebuilding, without resetting things to chaos every time, would be great but some would argue it takes pressure/uncertainty things will work out away from what they decided draws people to the game world. I think I even saw a quote from someone involved with the game saying essentially that about nuking Shady Sands, they didn’t want to let things diverge too much from what they saw as the tone of the “Fallout World” set in failed society. And it admittedly wouldn’t “feel” the same so it would be a risk they’d lose a lot of their audience. So I don’t think it necessarily contradicts there being an underlying good human nature in the writing, just disinterest in exploring it from any other angle.

      @RocketSurgn_@RocketSurgn_19 күн бұрын
    • Real world writing decisions aside, I think it still works internally- it just includes the reality that even assuming people are fundamentally good, they are flawed and self interest or even altruism built from a radically different perspective/world view can lead to conflict and destruction at times anyway. The reason “war never changes” and also lining up with the Maxus line that “everybody wants to save the world, they just disagree about how”. Sometimes, as in the real world, both sides genuinely want to do what they see as better for the world but their different definitions of better (or acceptable paths to that better) lead to destructive conflict. Also, however much fundamental good there may be in people as a whole some people just actively choose self interest.

      @RocketSurgn_@RocketSurgn_19 күн бұрын
  • Both sides are right. In conditions like where there is no civilization, human nature will come out as we are animals who prefer our own survivaval over others. BUT you also need these conditions for this nature to comeout. People in the vaults are more like modern societies, where they have different environment, hence they have never felt this survival instinct which makes us do bad things. At the end of the day the belief in evil human nature is not actually the enemy of the other view. Both views come from different experiences. People suck because they were made to suck and Because human nature sucks.

  • I mean, in a way this all already happened (This will be Euro-centric). The collapse of the Roman Empire, of "civilization" led to an era literally called the dark ages in Europe. In which technology, agriculture, political ideals, law and society itself became more divided and regressive. This period lasted hundreds of years before people were able to rebuild and bounce back. I would almost compare vault-tec to the Catholic church lmao, they had a responsibility and incentive to instill fear in the population to ensure their success and ultimate control (When Martin Luther's critique challenged this europe went to war for 30 years and 20% of the entire continents population died). I'd also like to add (Being from England) one of our most famous poems is about an Anglo Saxon man around 1000 years ago describing how he feels walking through roman ruins, thinking about the better past, talking about a society became great because people came together. The writer is kind of angry at the people that caused this destruction, and the fact they doomed the people of the future to live in chaos. The poem is called "The Ruin" by the way.

The mobile infantry made me the man i am today.🙂 They will make a cog in the machine so successfully that you will think that it was your own idea and that you never wanted it any other way. Brute force and violence is the only power that matters, something given has no value, when your voting you are using force, and you are only allowed to vote if you have been a part of the machine, a society governed by veterans as was it the millenary itself with a good PR team and good looking esthetics. The enemy are nothing but bugs, and you should be doing your part to protect the fascist state..... oh sorry... the democracy. Would I have been a Citizens or a Civilians if I lived in this society? Call me a "filthy liberal" all you want but regulated capitalism is the best system we have come up with that respects the individual as well as the collective. What the US needs is to get corporate money out of politics...communism isn't the answer.

    • Ah. No. You don't have to fully understand monarchy or slavery to overthrow it. I think you're suggesting that since getting to the inside definitely grants understanding, then it must be possible to change systems from the inside, especially if we assume that understanding is necessary to effect change... Except what are some examples of any of that being the case? - does getting inside grant understanding? - is understanding necessary for revolution? - is the kind of understanding that comes from being on the inside necessary or helpful for revolution? Edit: basically I'm arguing that smashing a system with a brick will change it without understanding

Having a public transport system isn't communism in the slightest lol. And Shady Sand isn't a communist place, it was the capitol of the NCR. The NCR are very specifically a faction that runs on the old world American values of capitalism and democracy. Also, I think you're looking way to deep into the messages of the shows if you thought Norm not wanting to rehabilitate a bunch of drugged out violent raiders was "conservative propaganda"

    @deadliestcholo@deadliestcholo21 күн бұрын
    • I haven't seen the show, myself, so I must be suitably tentative in offering a response. Perhaps, if it can rightly be said that parts to the show take the form of conservative propaganda, or of a non-conservative representation of conservative propaganda, it is precisely because those whom we are debating either rehabilitating or executing are represented as nothing more than "drugged out, violent raiders." If that is the framing, then the answer is obvious. That is what makes it propaganda. In representing the will to rehabilitate those who cannot be rehabilitated as ridiculous-which, indeed, it may be-the will to rehabilitate anyone is likewise undermined. The question of how we can know whom we can actually rehabilitate before we have tried is set aside. Quite apart from this, the ideas put forward as to how the raiders might be rehabilitated and the basis upon which the vault dwellers think rehabilitation possible are plainly ridiculous. They are juxtaposed against the simple and serious proposition of execution. One response seems to be represented as more worthy of consideration than the other, here, independently of the impetus.

      @sammcgee8726@sammcgee872621 күн бұрын
    • @@sammcgee8726 Yeah, you should probably watch the show or watch some lore videos. This comes after scenes of these raiders trying to kill all of the vault dwellers while actively taking amphetamines. And raiders are a specific faction in fallout of people who reject civility and string up corpses if not eat people as well. My point is that the show is following the logic of the games and how the games have set up the cultures of these groups. Vault dwellers are optimistic and naive, so many think they can rehabilitate raiders, and raiders are the worst of humanity from the surface where humanity is already brutal to have to survive. This isn't about modern day politics or any modern day propaganda, it's simply how these factions would react according to this fictional world. It's like when a conservative thinks it's woke propaganda that a society is accepting of gay people when most societies in human history aren't. No it's not woke propaganda, this group is simply just accepting of gay people. The vault dwellers are simply optimistic and naive, and the raiders are simply drugged out lunatics. also not to mention that later in this scene, the vault dwellers find out that their water will only last them 2 more months after it being fine for the last 200 years. so keeping these prisoners who will take months if not years to rehabilitate is not even a viable option.

The breakdown of the community was very much caused by liberals, who want to deny the horrors of reality and strive for nothing. You can’t fix the problems in the ghetto if the ghetto is a beautiful, wonderful culture that we should embrace and uplift. And with all these “beautiful cultures” of completely unshared ideals, the community collapsed. Rugged individualism doesn’t destroy communities at all. In fact, individuals make communities powerful, through specialization. Everyone in my community is a rugged individual, and we’re constantly sharing amazing things with each other. Subversive subcultures destroy communities.

My take: if anyone here knows any deplorables, and also knows anyone who believes a higher education is a prerequisite for understanding higher morality, you will realize that the _Fallout_ world is an inverted classist slur against the proletariat of the so-called advanced liberal democracies, thus completely in line with the ruling ideology of the global hegemon. It goes back to the garden of being deceived by satan,as God called him but that God actually made a way out of it through sending His only Son as flesh, into this world,died on behalf of mankind. Jesus is the propitiation for us. Humanity will never be at peace unfortunately because of this very fact that mankind has chosen do it on their own. Unpopular message? Yes. Why? Because man chooses not to acknowledge himself as a sinful fallen being that needs a Savoir. Remember, God wiped out mankind at the flood to start over. But He swore He would not do that again. What we are witnessing now,in this World,is nothing short of the manifestation of evil verses good. And by good I don't actually mean man. Its the Holy Spirit that's still dwelling upon this earth until He be removed from the earth. This dispensation is coming to an end now. Like Noah in the ark, get in the "boat" of Jesus Christ to be removed from the wrath to come upon the whole world.
