Try this with 2 antiquarians with protect me skill to force an ally to guard you and a man at arms with a highwaymen. Not only do you get shit tons of gold but it’s very efficient too.

@@trydodis690 Plus after couple turns your team is essentially untouchable after all that dodge spam. 10 by man-at-arms camp, 10 by his buff and 10 by every time antiquarian stacks his buff and the dodge+protection from forced guards. Thought for at least 200 hours that a) dodge isn't worth focusing on and b) antiquarian's buff is only single target. Using him first time properly blew my goddamn mind

Yeah, Riposte is actually one of the best counters to the Shambler. Even in a normal comp, it lets you deal with the tentacles while riposte damages the shambler instead of having to juggle both, which makes everything SO much easier.

You must sell 1 of the ancient trinkets, so u ll get it after shambler death. If you have every of them u ll get almost nothing

Did this in my second ruin run when I first started playing - as you could imagine, I wasn't picking up that campaign again...

accidentally activated on 6th week, 3 of my heroes got virtues and killed and an early ancestor's tentacle thing

The Shambler ancestral trinkets are the only reason to fight it - I've yet to get my hands on any of them since my comps just never seem to go to plan against ambushes

Once those clapperclaws stick around for a couple of turns, you'd think otherwise.

Fuck playing fair, i had most of my party wipes on shamblers, they are worse than thr collector.

The collector is only strong against newbies, against veterans he is free gold and trinckets.

José Anderson no, it depends on team and rng. You probably want to be considered a veteran yourself, but i'll tell you what: if you really think you can defeat the collector with any team, just with some experience... Gl scrub

I defeated the collector countless times, regardless of team comp. He is a cheese demi-boss, he is not tanky, he depends on his summons, his summons arent locked, so it could summon 3 vestal or 3 MaA, you get the first turn... etc. You could go with 3 vestals and 1 man at arms as a support and you would anihilate him. The only time he killed me, was when I was a new player, and I didnt know anything about him. In my second encounter I killed him with no casualites. As a boss, he is a reward. I would dare to say that maggots are actually worst than the collector, sinse they could infect you with silly money spending diseases.

Even in death, the Shambler screws the player over. "Oh, you think you're *smart,* pre-shuffling your team so I shuffle them BACK for you?! HAVE THIS CRUDDY LOOT REWARD FOR YOUR SUFFERING!!!"

That's exactly how my first shambler encounter went. I ended up having to abandon the quest I was on because the guys who were still alive were so messed up from fighting it. Still better than I anticipated though since I did it with a crew of level 1 characters and I was convinced as soon as I saw it that it was going to be a wipe.

My first time fighting him my whole team got wiped like a pile of shit, traumatizing ahhah

Yep. The only place you can't do it is in the middle of a fight.

the main issue with the shambler is it is *guaranteed* to surprise your team. so unless you have a team that can readily make use of their role regardless of positioning, it definitely makes things hell on earth.

Shambler always goes after your team. So u have a round to make your positioning pefrect. Hell on earth is that u must damage shambler and kill KAPPAclaws at the same time. I dont know how to do it effectivly without highwayman riposte

I've found that the highest priority targets were the Clapperclaws. While the first one or two times they hit they don't do much (though they do stress your party out a lot), their self buffing quickly stacks up so that they begin hitting like a truck, and their heightened protection means that they get harder to kill the longer they're alive. If you have strong enough stuns to be able to stun the Shambler, definitely go for it, because if it succeeds and you can kill the Clapperclaws you'll have an entire extra turn to lay as much damage on him as possible since he can't resummon them until the turn after. If you want to, you could also bring a mark party and kill the Shambler in 2-3 turns. The Clapperclaws will fucking hurt like hell when you have to clean them up after the fight, but you'll only have to deal with them rather than them and the Shambler as he constantly resummons them. Oh, and one final tip. Don't fight the champion level Shamblers. Trust me. Just don't.

I fight champion Shambler all the way only with Vest+2High+Jester(full night set) So its the only interesting challenge in the late game. You can try this. If you get very stressed(they can do several crits in a row) u can camp and get good stress relief. But I repeat, I could do it only with this set up. Jesters ballad gives u speed< so u can riposte and oneshot clipperclaws before they even get 1st attack

My whole roster is Level 6 and I've never fought the Shambler. That means I'll *have* to fight the Champion ones for thr Ancestral trinkets :(

A little kinda related tip: You don't make no-light parties, you make Shambler killer parties. Also, should you run out of torches on Champion... abort. On Veteran you may try your luck, but NEVER ON CHAMPION

@@piotrnapora5810 Oh come on, it really depends on your experience level. People like to challenge themselves by doing entire runs torchless, it's tough but totally doable.

@@renx81 I know, I used to do dark runs and hunt Shambler for the lulz until I miraculously avoided a TPK. So I know a few things about Shambler. I just think that usually it's not worth the risk, especially when your party isn't equipped for dark runs

@@renx81 What I had in mind was that if you run out of torches on champion and it's not a dark run team you abort because the risk of running into Shambler is too great

tbf you'd be safe in that scenario, since interacting with the altar without a torch will never summon a Shambler. All of the quirks that force curio interaction suck though. If I get one on a hero I care about I get rid of it ASAP, otherwise I'll just dismiss them.

not necessarily better, there's a whole number of good compositions that are ideal vs. The shambler, this is just one of them.

Abom is definitely a tier 1 shambler strategy.

It has happened to the best of us. That's why I usually never throw away my last torch to make room for other stuff, at least as long as I have the right comp to take him on and still need some of his trinkets.

if you don't have torches, then just walk around in pitch dark until you get the encounter.

jep. the dude knew what he was doing. My Comps very often struggle against scrambles, maybe i should think about that :D

@@FabiusDerDM tbh against shambler I would just use a party that is based on moving around the battlefield. Don't know how viable that is in vanilla DD tho

@@elgurkus6885 Except you can't really go into every dungeon with a comp like that unless you are explicitly Shambler hunting. In any case, it doesn't hurt to reverse your party order before going in, since that increases your chances of starting the fight in a favorable position.

There's no right or wrong way to go about it - different strategies are just as viable, but all are subjected to the often punishing numbers.

well there are better or worse strategies, but for me the whole point of the game is to think about new ones and try them out. :) you test you stuff in the early dungeons, and then hope that they hold up against the harder stuff

Just for more info, the party does pretty well for shuffles unless SB is thrown to the back and vestal is closer to rank 1 than MoA/antiquarian. SB just has to AOE blight everything then grave robber does the dmg. Vestal is stuck on heal duty or stun. MoA/Antiquarian stuck on buff/debuff duty

build your team around an abomination and you won't have any difficulties, unless your heroes are badly quirked and equipped

But in fact, Shambler is terrible when you decide to walk in red or yellow log dungeons, and in the dark and with the delusional intention of the player to put the torch in the altar when the party a) is not fast and is not sharpened for "riposte" - attacks b) 2 or 3 characters are squandered by stress and d) if the player's party is selected for a rigid binding to certain places in the team. Then this "Thing" will destroy everyone.

@@bertoldopleari7779 and what about accuracy and hight stress. And heroes almost ALWAYS will be bad quirked. It's one of the elements of this game.

The flickering sprite? That 'feature' gets unlocked after finishing the 1st darkest dungeon quest. You get glimpses of the 'truth' as your ancestor did, a kind of madness.
