Watch a Sniper Scene From ‘Civil War’ | Anatomy of a Scene
In this sequence from the writer and director Alex Garland’s latest film, “Civil War,” about a modern-day conflict that has broken out in America, journalists making their way to Washington, D.C., stumble across a field set up with Christmas decorations. But the situation couldn’t be less festive. A sniper is set up in a house on a hill above the field. And men in uniform are trying to take the sniper down.
Discussing the scene and its surrealist imagery in his narration, Garland said that in scouting locations, he and his crew came across decorations that were intact more or less as you see them in the film. He said they initially belonged to “a guy who’d put on a winter wonderland festival. People had not dug his winter wonderland festival and he’d gone bankrupt. And he decided just to leave everything just strewn around on a farmer’s field.”
Garland’s aim for the sequence, he said, was to show that “when things get extreme, the reasons why things got extreme no longer become relevant. And the knife edge of the problem is all that really remains relevant.”

If there's a sound design award for movies, I nominate this movie. Incredibly punchy sounds.
Absolutely the gunshot sounds, legit sounded like they were real in IMAX.
Too loud
These shoot-out sound effects reminded me of another GREAT movie with amazing sound effects from gun-fire....the best cops and robbers bank-heist movie "HEAT" starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. That shootout in Downtown Los Angeles with gunfire echoing off the buildings was intense. Seeing CIVIL WAR in IMAX reminded me of HEAT.

@@tadstertrolley7770 thats how gunshots actually sound
As a photographer, I absolutely loved the stills used in this movie. I loved the cinematography. I loved how the sound played into each scene so well. It was just incredibly well done. As a gun owner, I deeply appreciated that the AR-15/M-4 shots were full volume. A lot of people just don't understand how loud they are. They also don't understand that every gun does not sound the same. The best part of the movie was that the politics didn't matter. You could decide if the good guys, the bad guys, or nobody really won -- or if it was just simply irrelevant. The whole meaning of the movie is really found in Jessie's story and that made the whole movie worth watching. I can't wait to watch it again after it hits the streams. I'll probably buy the movie.
Just a generic gunshot sound effect. Not even the real rifles muzzle report.
@@hellcatdave1 That's basically true of all movies, but unlike many movies, they didn't use the same sample for everything. The M2HB sounds VERY different from the M4, etc. In many movies, you can almost talk over gunfire, which simply isn't happening in real life, you absolutely have to yell and that was conveyed in the volume of the SFX. No, it wasn't perfect, but it was much better than most.
Amazed that this scene was found instead of set directed

As an Appalachian, I'm not surprised at all 😂
the movie was great. i am a no critic but from a veteran; they really nailed the sound engineering. IMAX really worth the price.
IMO the movie was certainly interesting, fantastic sound design for sure and the rifles sounded realistic

There was very little story line, no mention of reason. A bunch of snipits and a disjointed story line. It was a loser of a movie that dragged on for an hour before much and even then, why? Sure you have morons in this country but it does matter why because no why just makes it gratitutous violence. The just say a civil war is going on, horrible movie.

One of the best movies I've ever seen and I've seen alot.
so says the pangender person
Uh…. The new Civil War movie? I literally saw it two hours ago. Should be called “Press”. It’s a typical leftist film. So boring. I’ve never left a movie and was so close, but kept waiting for action. Then when “action” came it was typical anti-white Hollywood propaganda. So boring too. Excruciatingly long and boring scenes with no sound at all.
I always thought the most realistic portrayal of a current day Civil War was Euel Arden’s novel, Down Here in the Warmth. Great book. How can you go wrong with Militia on the streets of Manhattan. INCLUDING snipers.
Thank you very much for the recommendation. I've been looking for literature similar to this theme
Thanks! I feel like this film could’ve been longer to play with the idea more.
I wonder how the 'militia' would fair against the 'gangs' in NYC ... or any other big city ? ?
I was the in the Army. In IMAX, the gunshots sound real AF.
This was my favorite scene.... really nailed home the point! 😂
This is the film's "Do Lung Bridge" scene from Apocalypse Now. The surrealism. The Christmas lights. The leaderless soldiers fighting an unseen enemy. The feeling that we've crossed the threshold of any sense of sanity or order.
Thank you. I feel like people are mad that it’s not a spelled out A vs B conflict. Much of the film is showing you the side conflicts where people are using the war to extract their own justice. The convenience store guy talking about the looter, said I went to High School with him and he didn’t talk to me much then…

We watched the movie and definitely recommend. The acting is a superb.
Awesome movie Alex
I love the use of chromatic aberration to signify Lee's disoociation at first and Jessie's by the end.
Something I love about the movie is using the Boogaloo movement’s attire and demeanor to depict Loyalist Forces. The Western Forces have a more militant attire which seems more “American” even though they are technically the rebellion in the movie. It really makes you as a viewer get confused over which side you’re “supposed to support”. Which only benefits (one of) the point(s) of the movie: the good guys are the victors, regardless of what their cause is
That’s cuz all the boogaloo boys are just feds tryna start civil unrest
Wait, so the Boogaloos were fighting WF in that one scene? I thought they were fighting the loyalists, but i ddidnt see the two star insignia on anyone. Great movie, regardless
Civil War is not out of the question in the future if Americans continue to act like children in politics. American politics can be summarized as such: "If I can't have my way, then nobody can have their way"
Politicians have no incentive to compromise since the savage tribalism of their supporters would promptly get rid of them if they tried. US society and politics has become a zero sum game and that will lead to ever-worsening conflict.
As a foreign student observing your politics, I worry about America. It feels like the end of the Heian period, just before the outbreak of the Genpei War
This scene was my favorite part of the entire movie
Bro watch this movie in IMAX. Such a completely different and surreal feeling.
"I got good news..."
I saw this movie yesterday. (Chef’s kiss) wonderful flick
This scene was great. The whole movie was great
Everything about this film was top shelf, but that very disturbing scene with Jesse Plemens sent chills down my spine! Because this film is not only escapist entertainment, but possibly visionary!

Why do you hear the gunshot before the bullet zip or hit?
There’s something called the sound barrier. Look it up.
Artistic decision. If the impact shot is sooner it feels awkward for me thinking about it.
@@KonaLife unless he’s shooting .300 blackout or something, the bullet goes faster than the sound barrier, so you’d hear the zip and the hit before the gunshot reaches the characters.
I'd assume their opponents are using subsonic ammunition. It's actually a fairly smart thing to do if you're doing counter-sniper work.
@@inoapostate9495why’s that? I don’t know much about guns
Hearing protection is a suggestion I guess. It’d be funny if the entire movie’s audio was ringing after the first couple gunshots
As a former photojournalist….NO way would you be dragging around a BIG, white telephoto like that, in a combat area…it would be taped up or spray painted….
This was an incredible film. For me, it carries two main messages; the dangers frontline journalists often face and the path the US could be heading down if moderate voices do not prevail
The spotter was moving his head. That tells the other sniper where this sniper is and then kills him or both.
A sniper would not make themselves a bigger target by dying there hair
He's not a sniper. He's a guy, who happenes to have the gear. Notice his nails are painted too. These aren't military men.

Wear camo everywhere but your head. Very Hollywood of them.

I would argue among Christmas decorations, they need more glitter, less camo.

Ghille suits usually have hoods they don’t have theirs on
Seriously tho. This movie had so much potential.
The second half was the best half
Yeah, the first half was kind of weird. I don't know exactly why, but the movie is just a million times better once Jesse Plemons shows up
@@charlesburns7391 The first half was snippets of how some people choose to cope with society dissolving in war. It's pretty much a modern variation of Apocalypse now, with a much louder ending. No long speech by "the madman", which is a bit more realism, I guess?
PREDICTIVE PROGRAMMING.
I watched that movie on Tuesday.....after seeing it, tbh...I have ONE correction for this movie, there are 3 (THREE) Journalists (2 reporters and the female, Lee). The young "ambitious" gal is a "press wannabe".....Lee does her job professionally, but the young lady is daring and wants that Pulitzer Prize shot! At the end, in the office, she takes a risky move that "costs" Lee her life.... Remember also, while Lee is shooting digital, this gal is using her dad's camera, a Nikon FM2, a FILM camera.....
Why do you spoil without any warning a brand new movie?
I’ll watch this movie. Seems interesting
Why are the soldiers hair multicolored and the sniper is wearing nail polish? Were they in the middle of a rave when the war broke out?
I was wondering the same thing. Looks ridiculous.

I have to ask: is this "anatomy of a scene" format sponsored by the movies showcased here? Like is it genuine or is it promotional content I can't tell
Rule of thumb for youtube: everything and everyone is trying to sell you something. For better or worse (most cases worse)
Usually when content about a movie comes out around the time the movie is released, it is promotional content. This is nice, though.
This is promotional. I mean I’m sure the NYT doesn’t just let any movie do this type of scene analysis but this is clearly paid for lol
The New York Times is a newspaper and newspapers have an Arts and Entertainment section. So, this video is an accompaniment to the Arts and Entertainment section for the digital age.
It's part of the promotional circuit of the film where actors and directors go around to various media outlets, but unlikely paid for. Arts and entertainment reporting have a symbiotic relationship with arts and entertainment. NYT gets views by producing good content and they get access to the director because it promotes his movie.
I went into this film eyerolling about how Texas and California could unite under any circumstance, fictional or not but none of that mattered by the time we reached this scene.
Why the two soldiers hade colorful paints on their heads
No one ever puts away their xmas decorations in the US. Disarray is a kind word.
I like that she is using a 40 year old camera the no modern photojournalist would use because they have no way move the photos to whomever would use them without the infrastructure required to develop film. Scan or print the film and then get it in useable form. Not to mention create duplicates of all their work to hide or send out via couriers.
Leica was, and is, the best.

Watched the movie in cinema yesterday. Unfortunately, it does not feel like an anti-war movie. Yes, the movie shows atrocities of war, but for most of these scenes the viewer had no time to connect to the victims. Most of the times, the movie feels like an action flick that fails to portray how devastating civil war would be to America.

Bit of a weird subject for this series, no? At least this scene is - Garland doesn't seem to have anything to say about it. He didn't even write the symbology into the script - it was happenstance. This feels like a sponsored bit.
Not everything has to be deeper than what it is. This is all about uneasy alliances, unknown actors in armed conflicts with dubious intentions. The soldiers they meet are nondescript beyond the fatigues, who are they? Who is their unit fighting for? Who is the guy shooting at them and why? Nobody knows. The larger factions such as the “WF” and the “FA” don’t seem to be in direct conflict but smaller splintered factions within their territories do. This scene perfectly encapsulates the fog of war.
Yeah, and Garland is a bit of hack. Number one, he’s British. The fact that he is and making a movie about an American civil war irks me somehow. Ex-Machina was a good movie, but Annihilation was just god awful. Think I’ll skip seeing this in the theater and wait for it on streaming.
