Deadly venomous Forest cobra (Naja subfulva), snake island in Uganda, longest true cobra worldwide

Deadly venomous Forest cobra (Naja melanoleuca) lives in tropical Africa. It is one of the longest venomous snakes in the world. Forest cobra has been recently split into 5 cobra species. This video is about Brown forest cobra and filmed in Uganda. Extremely toxic cobras live in rural areas close to people. These snakes often kill chickens and we filmed one cobra facing these birds. The snake was going to shed its skin. Forest cobras live also on Musambwa island. Fishermen work here, but this snake island is full of birds and cobras! Snakes are habituated to people on the island. The longest true cobra in the world is a very interesting snake species. It can grow up to 3 meters.

  • The first cobra on this video had abraded its rostral scales to the bone by the look of it. How can this happen in the wild? I very much doubt that it would have been capable of eating a full grown chicken, even if it had been hungry. It is amazing how high it reared when on full alert. As always, a wonderful video!

    • Thank you for watching!!! You probably mean the second individual, in the middle of the scene with chickens and the island scene. That cobra was caught by a local snake catcher before we came to the location, we filmed it and released. We were thinking the same thing, what the heck was the guy doing with the snake? But if you saw our film Snake safari in Uganda, you know how big problem is the pet trade...We try to educate locals, some of them are now educating other locals about snakes and they don't sell them anymore.

  • The chickens that the forest cobra came into contact with in the video all were pretty much too big for the snake to eat, correct? A three meter long cobra would not be able to eat/swallow a full sized chicken, correct? About how many chickens would a snake of the size of the one in the video be responsible for killing/eating? Could one snake wipe out a flock of chickens? I am assuming that the snake would only go after the chicks and juvenile chickens. My guess is that most of the human bites these snakes are responsible for are due to the human and the snake meeting in unexpected ways. Children and small animals would be at the biggest risk, I am guessing. When youcalled the snake a generalist hunter, what did you mean? The more I watch your videos, the more I enjoy your channel and wish you had a television program or occasional special. At 14 minutes, these videos always leave me wanting more. I learn a lot about from your videos. One item on my bucket list is to see and experience a cobra in the snake's native habitat. I would like to hear it, see it move, and even see it hunt. I do not need nor want to touch one. Just hang out with one from a safe, respectful distance. Your videos allow me some of that. Thank you again for another great video. I enjoyed it.

    • Snakes can eat huge prey items. It is common that Spectacled cobras in India go for adult chickens and they grow to maximum size around 2 meters. This Forest cobra would be able to devour at least the smaller adult chickens. One snake usually does not kill more than one prey item of this size. A cobra can live around chickens for a long time and once in a few month hunt one individual. Yes, the incidents happen because there are rats and domestic animals around villages and snakes come to hunt there. Forest cobra is a generalist, it hunts mammals, birds, even other snakes and also its own species. We are very happy that you like our channel and you want to see more videos! They will keep coming :) In the past we had the same dreams, we wanted to see snakes in their natural habitat. Wouldn't it be the task of these snakes, decimating the exploding population of african natives? And second question: Is it possible, adapting these snakes in europe for the same task?
