These Pigs Thrive on Grass (not Grain) So I Got 2

They say these Idaho Pasture pigs, thrive on grass, don’t get crazy big, but don’t take forever to get to harvest weight. So, we bought two piglets to see if they’d be right for our homestead long term.

  • After all these years, I’m still watching your videos! Given everything that’s going on in the last couple of months I’ve finally taking the steps to begin the process of buying some acreage and building a little farmhouse for my son and I. I’m looking forward to having our own Homestead soon enough!

  • I listened to the Webinar last night and was amazed by how much I learned about raising your own meat chickens and laying chickens!! While I’m not a premium member and couldn’t ask questions, I learned so much! I’m a 17 yr old from Virginia who’s interested by growing my own food and started my own garden this year too. I hope next year or so I can be a premium member since there are so many plus’s to being one but since I don’t have a job right now and don’t have the money to spend on those plus’s, I will continue learning from these amazing videos!!! I hope you and your entire family stay healthy during this crazy time ❤️

  • Nice video Justin! We own a couple of Kune/American Guinea cross sows ourselves. We are currently trying to source a boar so we can begin our breeding program and expand our herd for meat, lawn mowing, and garbage disposal purposes. I love the kune breed. As someone who didn't grow up raising pigs, but knew commercial farmers who did, pigs are hefty scary beasts, which is why families should put a lot of research into what breed would work well for them first. Years ago, a woman in Oregon was eaten to death when she fell into her commercial pig pen. It's horror stories like those that made me think twice before raising them. As for ours, we have never had problems with rooting or mischief. Ours live in goat fencing with no hog panels or underground proofing of any kind. They respect boundaries and don't require harsh correction. Ours are quiet except when food scraps are within their eye sight-then they scream for ice cream (or in this case vegetables). They are slow growing, which is what we wanted since we don't have freezer space right away for a fast feeder pig or a big family to feed. They are so docile and tame, I pet mine everyday and call them by their name and they come to me just like a dog! Did you know that pigs are the world's 3rd smartest animal and have been known to learn obedience commands? Pigs are also used in the medical community to train doctors, since their bodies closely resemble humans. They also are used for certain organ and medical transplants too. Handling from day one on any you plan to keep and breed is key. Ours were scared to death when they came home and now they would follow me to the ends of the Earth, I think. I can't wait to see how your experience goes with these gorgeous creatures. Best of Luck from California!

  • Justin, I enjoy your channel, but I don't understand the process here. Just a few weeks ago I saw you feeding hay, which means you don't have enough forage. So what's the thought process behind getting more livestock that consume forage?

    @jackzwart5749@jackzwart57494 жыл бұрын
    • No problem, great question. We're going to try them as pig as tillers in the forest. We'll see if they do that. We do need some tiller pigs. However, we're also keen on maybe running them three days behind the cows, instead of chickens, because they are easier to maintain and might be easier to move. We also have options grazing them behind the luchadores.
