Collectively they are called 'lagestaten', rock outcrops where the rock is so fine grained, and when first deposited, so low in oxygen that very fine detail, and even soft tissue is preserved and fossilised. The stone slabs he was splitting off the block were featureless and perfectly smooth, but I wonder if, every now and again, he splits a slab off to reveal, say, a fish, so perfectly preserved you can count the scales...
