How To Use A Self-swabbing Antigen Rapid Test Kit Correctly

Antigen Rapid Test (ART) kits are widely available in pharmacies. Anyone can buy an ART kit to self-swab and test for the coronavirus.
But the kit is the most accurate when tested within day 5-7 of a COVID-19 infection when the viral load is the highest; symptoms only usually show on day 14. When tested outside of the 2-day window, the test kits have a higher chance of false positive and false negative results.
Professor Dale Fisher of the Division of Infectious Diseases at National University Hospital explains how a self-swab can be done for the most accurate results.
00:15 How does an ART kit detect the coronavirus?
00:48 How accurate is an antigen rapid test?
01:10 Why is my antigen rapid test inaccurate? Why do I have a false positive / false negative result?
01:47 How do I get the most accurate self-swab antigen rapid test results?
01:52 The first step when you open a self-swab ART kit.
02:05 How deep should I insert the swab in my nostril?
02:08 How many times do I need to turn and rotate the swab? Do I need to swab both nostrils?
02:16 Proceed with test as per manufacturer’s instructions
All households in Singapore will be issued Antigen Rapid Test (ART) kits between Aug 28 and Sep 27, 2021, with the aim of getting everyone including fully vaccinated individuals to self-test regularly.

    • The PCR test is more sensitive. Also the virus can hang around much longer in the body that shows up in the PCR test. The rapid test is best done if someone else does it. Most people don't want to push the swab all the way under the eye which is where the virus would be detected if there. I see people moving the swab around in their nose. The virus is not going to be plentiful in the nostrils.

  • I did the PCR at first and i didnt think I did it correctly since i was confused about the procedure for the 1st time. But guess what, i still got positive. And the second time i did the rapid test, i sniffed three time when i put the swab deeply into my nostrils and i thought i may fail or i'd get an invalid result. It showed negative. I still caugh in midnight but no other symptoms. So i have to believe the reault anyway since the test center wont provide pcr unless i am social worker or ordering official report....
