Euclid police, along with US Marshals and Shaker Heights police chief, address the media following the fatal shooting of a police officer.
Euclid police have confirmed to 3News that an officer died in the line of duty Saturday night.
Officers were responding to a disturbance in the 300 block of East 211th Street at approximately 9:56 p.m. While police investigated the call, a gunman shot the officer, in what was described as an "ambush," before leaving the scene.
The officer was taken to University Hospitals for treatment but he didn’t survive. In a statement, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost identified the officer as Jacob Derbin, a first-year officer with the Euclid Police Department.
"The killer who ambushed Officer Derbin will be found and will receive the full measure of justice," Yost said

  • My father was a veteran and police officer. I am a veteran and was also a police officer. Qualified Immunity MUST be ended so good officers can once again be respected.

    @keithcampbell4926@keithcampbell492610 күн бұрын
    • Are you serious? Removing qualified immunity could potentially lead to a massive exodus of police officers to other professions, especially at a time when law enforcement agencies are already facing significant challenges in hiring and retaining officers. The current climate, where officers are often baited and treated poorly for the sake of video views, only exacerbates the situation. It’s essential to protect those who serve our communities and ensure that good officers can do their jobs with respect and safety. While accountability is crucial, we must consider the broader implications of removing such protections on the morale and stability of our police forces.

      @walkersdad21@walkersdad219 күн бұрын
    • @@walkersdad21 Your argument sounds like "omg! are you serious? Removing slavery could potentially lead to crime, vengeance and destruction of White civilization". But, has it happened after emancipation proclamation?

      @go-fast-fast@go-fast-fast9 күн бұрын
    • @go-fast-fast, I understand the intensity of the comparison you're making, and it's crucial to draw from historical contexts to inform our present discussions. However, comparing the removal of qualified immunity for police officers to the abolition of slavery encompasses vastly different stakes and societal impacts. Qualified immunity is a legal doctrine designed to protect officers from frivolous lawsuits and financial liability when they perform their duties in good faith and within the bounds of the law. Critics argue that it also shields officers from accountability for misconduct. Discussing its removal should focus on the balance between accountability and maintaining enough protections so law enforcement professionals don't face undue personal risk for reasonable actions taken during their duties. The fear that many express about a potential exodus from the police force stems from concerns that without such protections, the risks of the job could outweigh the benefits for many officers. This is a legitimate concern that warrants a thoughtful, detailed debate, rather than comparisons to historically and contextually different situations. We need to ensure that our officers are both well-protected and held accountable, creating a system that supports those who perform their duties properly while ensuring that there are effective mechanisms to address actual misconduct. What would be helpful is a discussion on how we might achieve this balance. Perhaps looking into systems where adjustments have been made could guide us towards a solution that upholds justice and safety for all, including the officers and the communities they serve.

      @walkersdad21@walkersdad219 күн бұрын
    • @@walkersdad21qualified immunity is legalized criminality. Prove me wrong.

      @trentbrownstone1481@trentbrownstone14818 күн бұрын
    • @@trentbrownstone1481 Trent, the challenge to "prove me wrong" sets a tone that's more suited for a debate club than a constructive conversation. It's important to remember that complex issues like qualified immunity require nuanced understanding and cannot be distilled into simple, binary right or wrong answers. Qualified immunity is a judicial doctrine designed to protect officers from frivolous lawsuits and financial liability in the course of performing their official duties, provided their conduct does not violate clearly established statutory or constitutional rights of which a reasonable person would have known. This is crucial because it allows law enforcement officers to make split-second decisions in highly dynamic and dangerous situations without the paralyzing fear of unwarranted legal repercussions. However, it's also true that this doctrine can lead to situations where egregious conduct does not result in accountability, especially if the exact action hasn't been previously deemed unconstitutional. This is where the doctrine attracts significant criticism and calls for reform. The phrase "prove me wrong" simplifies what is a very layered issue into a polarizing stance that seeks to discredit differing opinions rather than understanding them. A more constructive approach might be to explore how qualified immunity impacts the justice system, both positively and negatively, and then discuss potential reforms that can address these challenges while still protecting those who serve our communities responsibly. This way, we can work towards solutions that uphold both justice and safety.

  • 23 years young! Less than a year as an officer! This young man literally had just started his life! Its not just a lack of respect for law enforcement and authority, it's a lack of respect for human life!!! LEO'S put thier lives on the line everyday when they're running into unknown situations and facing dangerous criminals. They risk it all to get them off the street and locked up. But it seems like its all for nothing when the court's are dropping charges that would keep them imprisoned longer. Cops file charges for every law that was broken, judge just throws them out and releases them to continue their crime sprees. Government cares more about money so issuing fines is thier priority! The justice system will always fail us just like our government and nothing will ever change if the American people don't Unite and take a stand

  • He had a record since 11 years of age…did the officers know this when they were dispatched and proceeded to look for him? Then you have a 23 year old officer? No disrespect…it’s just this type of call should have knowledge, experience, and serious safety. So sad…RIP.

  • If you have a half assed prosecutor that doesn’t prosecute to the fullest then it will never matter what the officers do and to any capacity. That’s usually the case.

  • Thank you to all the the law enforcement teams that are in our communities. I have 3 great nephews that are in law enforcement. They love their jobs and look forward to going work . I blame the judges and politicians that let the thugs go . We here in western Iowa love and honor our police , sheriffs and law !!

  • RIP Officer Jacob Derbin, deepest condolences to his family. He was too young and his family's life is undoubtedly shattered. Worked in LE and know the Chief of Euclid is right, there's been no respect of authority for a long time.

    • You can't say there has been "no" respect. That is not true. The mass majority of our country DOES still have GREAT respect, admiration and appreciation for law enforcement. I believe the main problem is the judicial system and the way they pussy foot around black people ever since the George Floyd thing. Which was a complete farce in my opinion. There HAS to be SERIOUS punishment that sticks! Anyway... got off track... MOST of the country still respects law enforcement. The ones that don't, don't matter! Thank you for your service.
