What would an ENSH*TTIFIED Linux distro look like?

Just for fun, I decided to try and imagine what a Linux distro would look like if it got hit by the enshittification stick that seems to affect every digital product of service these days.

    • I think Microsoft already factored lost users in their estimates when they implemented the strict system requirements. There was no way they would get the same market penetration as Windows 10. They were much more aggressive in trying to push Windows 10...and pretty much all PCs were compatible. With Windows 11, they've already pushed a release update that prevents Athlon 64 X2 or coreduo (+ everything older) from working. The TPM bypass still won't work. People need to understand that Microsoft can do this whenever they want on unsupported hardware. The bypass is NOT full proof solution!!!

This is the proof, you only use certified and allowed hardware, that can not circumvent telemetry in a malicious manner. Otherwise it would be rejected and loads of unrelated malfunctions will occur. Due to safety reasons of course. Crucial key component ist the TPM 2.0 cryptographic chip, that prevents even the most experienced hacker - sorry, user - from turning off important data streams, like e.g. taskbar ads, transmission of your browser history, etc.

  • This is one scenario that the Gnu Public License (GPL) was designed to prevent. Especially the requirement that any additions / improvements / changes to the code be made Open Source as well is what prevents the "Extend -> Exterminate" part of the scenario. Which is why we should definitely use the GPL more often. We have a lot to thank RMS (Richard Stallman) for.

    @TheEvertw@TheEvertw19 күн бұрын
    • Richard Stallman is a moron. He claims to want freedom of choice for users, then proceeds to rant about Linux distros not being truly free and open because they make it easy for users to install proprietary software. The thing about freedom of choice is that it means people get to choose things you don't agree with, if somebody wants to install Debian then load it up with Microsoft products, they can, it is their choice. To me, Stallman is the exact opposite of what he claims to stand for.

      @IvanIvanov-nn9os@IvanIvanov-nn9os19 күн бұрын
    • Exactly why this hasn't been able to be done with Linux; any customer who buys or uses a copy of something licensed under a copyleft license has the right to the source code and to use, change, and redistribution under the same license. That's why there could be forks of programs such as LibreOffice (from OpenOfficeOrg, now Apache OpenOffice, permissively licensed, and now pretty much dead), XOrg (forked from XFree86, although that was permissively licensed under a slightly modified MIT license until the final release of 4.4, which the fork of the final beta of XFree86 4.4 as XOrg server came from), MATE and Cinnamon (forks of GNOME 2 and 3 respectively) and countless times Debian and Ubuntu have been forked to create new distros. Oddly enough, there used to be boxed Linux distros on CDs and DVDs that you had to pay for to get the distro. That was forever killed by Ubuntu and Canonical's ShipIt service sending free (as in cost AND speech) DVDs of Ubuntu to anybody. That could be done because Mark Shuttleworth is literally a multi-millionare many times over. As much as we all hate Ubuntu and Canonical now, they did manage to change the distribution of Linux distros forever.

    • I am your average... opposite of a power user. I use Windows because it came with the computer, and I don’t really want to have to get my hands in the guts of my computer's OS, and I've heard so many horror stories about users like me getting absolutely screwed by our own incompetence on every other option that I refuse to even bother messing with Linux as a toy or novelty. That said, if Windows makes their OS a subscription... the only thing I hate more than computer junk I don't understand is expensive subscriptions. And I hate Apple's walled garden BS and expensive status symbol hardware, and I've used Chromebooks and they suck. I want something that you just install it and it works, that will run an internet browser, run office tools like a word processor and a spreadsheet program, and run my games. The horror stories have convinced me that Linux is not that... but I will definitely have to at least try the most recommended beginner distro if MS does something frustrating enough, and I suspect a lot of computer users on my level of understanding and comfort are in the same position. Today I read a paper from 1999 criticising the way MS has built an empire selling OSs and how they're a house of cards and even their huge low understanding userbase could get pissed off enough and learn enough about computers to try something else and stop buying not just the products themselves but the slick marketing they come with, and it's all still relevant. If anything, that paper is more prescient 25 years later than it was at the time. Well, that part anyway. The guy's got some political views that were questionable at the time and really didn't age well.
