  • In one way or another, something magical happens when you listen classical music. You disconnect yourself from reality, living in the moment of an illusion that feels like eternity. And in that void you realize that, nothing lasts. Love, passion, pain, grief, regret, anger. You become present. This realisation is naturally so honest and pure that brings you clarity. I still manage to explain this bizarre state of a frozen mind processing so many emotions in such peace. I am grateful for this fresh experience.

  • I am in love with gray clouds, rainy days, and foggy skies. There is a ethereal beauty that comes with the sights, sounds, and physical sensations that come with such a setting. The cold breeze gently wrapping around you, comforting but in a somber way. When you breathe, there is a subtle cool moist that feels as if it fills the path through your nose and wind pipe. The harshness of the droplets of rain as they come crashing into puddles of water, layered over stone or cement as they’ve travelled through hundreds of meters from the sky… It gives a feeling of sharp fragility to the plummeting water, a symphony of notes you could attribute to the harsh percussion of a piano key. I am a person who only sees rain during the monsoon season, as where I live, the normal sights include coarse sand, saguaro cacti, and heat reflections that only exist in the distance. Which is to say, I live in a desert, albeit an urbanized one. It is always such a sight to see big clouds in the distance, whether they are light and fluffy like poodle dog fur, or a blanket of ethereal gray. I wish I could experience rainy skies forever.

  • As a harpsichordist, I can't be but moved and yet a bit smiling when I hear these Baroque pieces played with such a Romantic touch. People who don't pay attention or just are unaware of it haven't realised how deeply "Romantic" Baroque composers could be in the expression of their sensibility. If you are keen on Romanticism but are eager to discover the Baroque time, I highly recommend you to listen to Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's works which are an invitation to the universe of Pre-Romanticism spirit at the time of Late Baroque (probably the most talented Pre-Romantic composer of his time in my humble opinion). Be also aware of the infinite "intimate répertoire" made for solo or a few instruments which is very similar to the Romantic composers' conception of music. I'm not a specialist but I'm sure one could find the same musical ideas even earlier back to Rinascimento or Middle Ages. All that to say that sensitiveness and the depth of emotions through music are basically timeless and that we, folks from 2021, are so lucky to have the possibility to experience them all despite the enigmas about their genuine interpretation which probably distort their original nature. It's indeed a paradise lost but I'm the happiest seeker of lost paradises.

    • @pythonrice Wise words. It just highlights the fact that human beings suffer no "category" nor any reductive definition of themselves through Art. I am always disappointed when this topic is broached because I used to quote a very illustrative example from my personal experience, of a poem written by an old Norse skald whose his name escapes me. When I read it for the first time, I hadn't been told about its time, I spontaneously concluded that it was a beautiful text written by some very good Romantic poet because it was so passionate, melancholic, gathering all the characteristics of a Romantic expression. I was so astonished when I discovered that it had been written before the 10th century whereas I would have imagined a date around1820-1830. All that to say that indeed, anyone has the faculty to feel, express and share through an artistic mediation aside from his time. I hope my English was understandable for that it is not my mother tongue.

  • As he walked down the foggy bridge in the early evening, he could hear the tapping of horses' hooves as they carried their carriages to their directed destination. A cold wind blew, and misty rain peppered the man's face as he made his way home. Slightly shivering, he drew his overcoat closer to his body. The hustle and bustle of the Czech city streets was slowly fading into a distant, echoed emptiness. It was just as he liked it. He could easily organize the tempest of thoughts raging in his mind. No distractions, nothing vying for his attention. It was just him within the emptying world. As the mist turned into droplets and the falling rain pierced his coat, the man quickened his pace. Each step he took became a rhythm, a dance of harmony with the spatter of precipitation. With each stride the sounds lulled him further inward, and soon, all that could be sensed was the pounding of his shoes across the bricked pavement. He didn't mind the cold, nor did he the windy rain; these external elements besieging his body couldn't truly bother him. Not with what he was facing. [If you come across this comment, please continue the story, writing whatever the music brings to mind. I decided the location being Czech as the bridge in the photo is in Prague, Czech Republic. Happy writing!]

    • Finally, he reached his residence, a small but quaint little domicile tucked away from the main streets and cacophony of the everyday bustle. His sanctuary, in the seemingly upside and crooked world. His thoughts retreating as he entered the foyer, the sound of now hard pouring rain faded into the background like an unwanted visitor kept outside. The smell of old leather and seasoned wood filled his nose, water still dripping from an old and weary face, onto ancient rugs that have lived a thousand lives. He undressed and slowly walked to the kitchen, his feet locked in a dance of creaks and sounds with the underlying wood floors. How many years as he walked this same route, putting the kettle on and retiring to sit in his study, where he knew the swirling thoughts would come again, some to inspire him, others to torture him, even if but for a short sequence of healthy self-doubt and depression. He knew what was ahead, long hours of trying to get his racing mind down on paper, to organize the madness into some kind of sense and if he was lucky, artistic expression. Some nights went well, others not. The dim lights glowed as if to invite him back into the recesses of his mind, a place that, while not always a pleasant place to be, it was one that he was familiar with, a place he could find some brief solace and respite. Alas, the man opened his eyes abruptly, already sitting in his chair, the half-drunken tea next to him, cold and lifeless. The rain had intensified, and the lights were starting to flicker. How long had he been away? What had he accomplished during his dreamwalk? Perhaps, he wasn't waking up, perhaps he was just starting to embark on yet another adventure within the dimly lit corridors of his psyche...

      @MG-eg7ue@MG-eg7ue Жыл бұрын
    • He took the final sip of tea, eyes closed. The scents and tastes teased their way through his sinuses and across his taste buds. He set the cup down softly, frail hands trembling to do so. He stood, joints cracking and popping, and began the meticulous cleaning process to prepare his cup and kettle for tomorrow's batch. This was his life now. The same walk each day, the same tea to settle him for each night. He lay down to rest as the thunder rumbled outside, knowing full well he'd get none. The daydreams were filled with nonsense. But at night, they came from a darker place inside. The place that knew exactly what he'd done. The place he couldn't refuse, as his sleeping mind was powerless to fight it. So he stayed awake another night. And by the morning, he was ready to fetch the tea leaves they'd been growing in the community garden together. It was always a mystery, how the leaves stayed alive all these years. He hadn't the capacity to care for them, nor anything really. And yet they were always there. So he always showed up. Some days, his mind would wander too far, and expect her to be there. Those days were the hardest to get through.

    • This is nice but my concept of dark academia includes medieval and renaissance music (aka Early Music) in minor keys. @halidonmusic that would be my recommendation. When I studied in London (you know, a foggy city with cobblestones), such music often formed my internal soundtrack as I strolled around. However, I only just recently learned the term dark academia, which seemed to match some of the clothing, reading, and general style that I like, so maybe I'm misunderstanding it.

    • You make a good point, Chris. The concept of 'Dark academia' takes inspiration from Gothic elements but is more focused on the study of Latin and Greek literature, poetry and the classics in general, which is why the visuals often feature dimly-lit desks covered in dusty old books or ancient libraries. It's about the fascination and mystery of classic academia the way it was taught in the 19th century, basically. • I know every one of these by heart to listen to only. My mom played all these over and over and over when I was a kid trying to go to sleep. Decades later and I still remember them. Would know if a single note was wrong because ma cursed at every mistake.
