  • This is exactly, (more or less) how it sounded from an audience perspective. I saw it live in San Francisco Winterland Theater in the winter of 1971!

    • Agreed on disliking the 1974-1975 versions. Saxophone? No thanks. Having said that, the 11/15/72 Boblingen show is a great sounding recording, one of the best sounding live show recordings I’ve ever heard and features a fantastic “Echoes” and, in my opinion, THE definitive live “Careful With That Axe, Eugene”.

  • I envy anyone who got to see this performed live back in the day when Floyd was at this period of the band's history. I didn't get into them until The Wall so I was something of a latecomer, but quickly began going back into their catalogue of albums. Nowadays I prefer this period from the late 60's after losing Syd Barrett and before the doom and gloom music they'd embrace from Dark Side to The Wall. That pessimism appealed during a certain time but now I have a greater fondness for those albums during their transitional period when they were looking for a defining sound, experimenting, stumbling, but there are many great gems to be found that never really got their due and will never be found on these endless retrospective packages which just trot out the same "hits". Echoes was a crystallization of these experiments. It will forever rank at the number One spot on my favourite Floyd songs.

  • Hate to go against the grain, but I always have a hard time listening to the Montreux performance due to Dave's guitar being slightly out of tune (a good example is the dissonant tone at 7:43). The energy is great though. For my money, I like the '71 BBC studio version, the '72 Hollywood Bowl, Pompeii of course and the 2006 Albert Hall and Gdansk performances.

    @returnofthesonofnothing5358@returnofthesonofnothing53584 жыл бұрын
    • i also like bbc and pompeii more. gdansk and RAH are not as good as montreux for me because the intro is cut short and for me the intro to echoes is my favourite part of the song. i never noticed gilmours guitar was out of tune but yea i think his e string is. this show always sounded a little strange to me but thats one of the things i like about it.

      @pinkrudy@pinkrudy4 жыл бұрын
    • @@pinkrudy Yes, you are right about the 2006 versions missing an intro verse. There are also other problems with them, mainly the drummer is just more flat than Mason in his heyday, and Pratt's bass is doing far too much. OTOH though, Gilmour does play the non-slide (ie fretted) version of the intro previously only heard on the original studio version - they never played it live in the 70's afaik.

    • @@pinkrudy I can appreciate that - I like both versions too. There are some other performances out there worth noting too. Rome 1971 has a rather nice version with the earlier space-themed lyrics (though the piece is less refined). There is one version, I forget whether it is Böblingen or Sportpalast (maybe both?) in '72 where the entire audience are stamping their feet and clapping their hands during the funky section - really cool to hear that level of enjoyment and the band seem to feedback from that in a cool way. Zurich 1972.. Albert Hall '73.. Yeeshkul! (73) In fact, almost any of the pre-'74 performances are great. But that is where I draw the line - the '74/'75 arrangement to me feels wrong and I will not go there!
