  • Ah, the Feuerzangenbowle....I grew up with an aunt from Germany who brought that tradition here. She had a big copper pot that sat on a stand, which she filled with red wine and fruit on the bottom. The literal translation--fire tongs bowl--references the tong that sits on top of the pot and holds that sugar cone. We had huge sugar cones imported from Germany. The rum was poured over it and lit on fire. It took quite some time to melt the whole thing. I've never actually seen it done in miniature like that which you had. That was very cute. I love those memories. We were too young to drink the wine, of course, but we did get some of the fruit. It was yummy but strong. Lol. I've gone so far as to make one of my homemade hand sanitizers a Feuerzangenbowle scent. It's very strong, too. 😋

    @freedomdove@freedomdove4 жыл бұрын
    • There is also a german cult movie called "Feuerzangenbowle" from 1944. It's about a teacher who gets dared from his friends to go back to school as a pupil. It's really popular in the big college citys. It's shown end of every year. Students mix their Feuerzangenbowle before hand, then take it with them watching the movie in the bigest lecture hall. Afterwards many bars also serve the drink that night. Quite a special day in college life over here.

In all cities there are beautiful christmas markets and also every smaller city has one. These are sometimes even more charming than the big ones, because most of them still have a medieval town centre. enjoy the christmas time because in this time you should concentrate on the important things in life like love, harmony and community.

  • Greetings from Hannover, the medieval part is my favourite thing! Especially hot mead, I highly recommend to check some of the different flavours out! And cudos for drinking that horn and staying upright, I manage to drink one and get a bit tipsy for around 15 minutes, but I've seen quite a few people not being able to handle such an amount. Problem is not the alcohol, but the sugar from the honey. The alcohol goes straight into your blood and gets you drunk within minutes if you are not used to it, and it's even worse when it's hot. Also Schmalzkuchen is great, since I was a child I am able to find the huts selling it on a christmas market by scent from around 100 metres distance. xD

  • 1 more fun fact: Since you paid "Pfand" (deposit) for your mug of Glühwein, you can literally just wander off with it. Like the cup? Keep it... Need a "road Glühwein" zu get you home? Just take it and you'll have a memory in the form of the cup on top of it! - Many Glühwein Stands try to make use of that fun phenomenon by designing nice/memorable cups that entice people to nick them, so they earn more by selling the cups on top of the Glühwein... The heart-shaped cups toward the end of the video are a great example of that!

I have made my own mead, mixed it with apple cider, heated in pot and then stir it in the mug with a cinnamon stick. Awesome.

  • Best first time going to a German Christmas market video this year. 😊 I really don't have a favorite. It's more like a checklist of stuff I need to get each year. 😁 Bratwurst, Crepes (Nutella & Cherries, Nutella & Amaretto, Yogurette), chocolate covered fruit (strawberries, pineapple), roasted almonds, Kartoffelpuffer (aka Reiberdatschi) with apple sauce, Steakbrötchen with onions, Glühwein, Feuerzangenbowle and Lumumba. There's just so much good stuff.

  • I want to see Phil visit German-themed towns in America. Many have Germanic roots, but some actually renovated the town to make it look more Bavarian for tourism. I'd be interested in seeing him visit some, such as Frankenmuth, Michigan; Leavenworth, Washington; and Hermann, Missouri. They have some Christmas-themed events that reminded me of your video.
