  • As a former Animal Control Officer, I can tell you that he most definitely was a bait dog! They are always tied with a tight rope/chain and not fed much. The weaker they are, the more attractive they are to the fighting dog. It's a disgusting practice by worthless people. Hot Rod prayed for him, and he was delivered to you to save. I'm confident he will get all the love, attention, and play he deserves. God Bless you all!

  • Pittys were called a "nanny dog" in late 1800's- early 1900's. They were used in that way for their loyalty. As long as you're willing to allow him to teach you while you're teaching him, all your questions about him will be answered. I think you've got yourself a damn good pup.

      @DarKMatter.1@DarKMatter.1Ай бұрын
    • @@NoWr2Run The term was never really widely used at any point in history but was occasionally hung on Staffordshire Terriers. The Pits as nanny dogs thing has mostly sprung up in recent history as people try to combat the negative image a lot of folks have with pits. I've owned several. A couple I'd never let off lead near another dog and one that couldn't have cared less if there was a dog right in front of him. All were good with children but one got temperamental as they (the children) became teens. Pitbulls are just like any other dog but have serious bite force - they're dangerous IF they bite but that can be said about many dogs. Each dog is an individual and needs to be taught and learned about to fully understand and bond with them. Nanny dogs, though? No. That's not really a broad historical thing applied to the breed.

    • @@kellyrjohnson7693 good description. I've had a Walker that was meaner than any dog I've ever known but he loved & trusted me completely. He had had a rough life before I got him. He was a scarred up, block headed old coon hound who hated everyone but me. I adapted to that by walking him at night in the woods behind our house to minimize interactions with other people. He was fine unless someone approached me or him. I hated that I couldn't socialize him more but I had no choice but to protect him from himself. Despite his anti social behavior, I miss him dearly.

    • We rescued a girl Pitt, Princess, she was dumped at Animal Control with her babies. The babies got snapped up quickly, she was basically waiting to be cancelled. My friend took her daughter to get a dog, and Princess chose them to be her new family. Such a sweet doggie. Princess was already trained to shake, roll over, sit, so someone loved her at one time. That makes me sad they gave up on her. Now she has a new family, we all love her and she just needs to realize when she gets the zoomies its not ok to bounce off people to change your course of direction. A 50+ lb Pittie bouncing off your chest while you are calmly sitting on the couch is not ok. But she was running and smiling, so I coudn't get mad...I couldn't breahte for a minute either, but she didn't know. Very playful girl.

  • Hot Rod will hopefully be ok after Theo gets bathed. My family adopted a Piitty named Toby after his original owners surrendered him when their son developed allergies to him. When we first got Toby my younger daughter started to get stuffy and my skin itched a bit. Turns out he needs a bath once a week to keep the dander down, he smells better and no more allergies. Oatmeal shampoo is good for the skin and the medicated shampoo that has Chlorhexidine Gluconate is good for rash spots. Burt Wards Gentle Giants dog food also helped with us with the skin/dander issues. You're doing God's work saving that dog. ❤

  • Though we have always had dogs I was, for a long time, a cat hater. Well, my wife of 36 years was born and raised in a home that always had house cats. After being married for a few years and successfully avoiding having cats in our house this old 1/2 dead stray hobbled up in the yard and twirled around my wife’s legs. Outwards I protested but inwardly I felt so bad for the pitiful little thing. Fast forward 21 years later and I’m standing beside a little pet cemetery on our farm burying that same cat. Our children grew up with her and she was the best companion that my wife ever had after my wife was in a horrific auto accident and couldn’t walk for a year. I believe with all my heart that God sent my wife that cat to help her through the most difficult time in her life. I blubbered like a baby when I buried the cat . The non believer would just chalk it up to coincidence but I don’t believe that was the case at all.

The neighbors told the rescue squad that the families son would hit the dog with sticks and throw rocks at him. Now he's spoiled rotten. Sleeps with me, is always wagging his tail and can't even let me poop without being there. Your vet is right, they are the best dogs ever. • Me and my wife took in a dog a few years back. The person we got her from said they couldn't take her to their new housing situation. So i wasn't exactly thrilled but i came home from work to the dog. tried not getting attached but the dog took to me quicker then i could get my boots off. So i fell in love with her almost instantly she was skin and bone and obviously ill after a vet check we got her meds and a month later not much improvement. They thought she needed fixed because of the issues female dogs can have causing issues. So we went to have her fixed to hopefully remedy the issue. Sadly, they opened her up and found lots of cancer that the previous owner had to have known she had major issues if he had her at the vet as much as he said he did. The worst part is i wasn't able to say goodbye to the sweet girl she never came out of anesthesia. But the part that i will always remember is how happy she seemed and all the love she gave me and the wife even in all that pain. I truly hope the last 2 months of her life were the best. Moral of the story is even beaten and neglected when you give them love and they give it back its a done deal. I hope the family loves and enjoys the ole boy for many many years to come.

  • Theo is a good boy, and he is smart. The way I see most dogs, they give you unconditional love. God sent him to HotRod because she believes in Him, and Godalso has unconditonal love, He decided you all needed an angel to watch over HotRod and your whole family. There a a few dogs who are lost, just like a lot of humans, mostly due to bad training. I like that when you were checking his undercarraige for ticks, he just rolled over and enjoyed all the belly rubs and pets you were giving him. Puddin, you rescue, rebuild and rehabiitate cars and trucks for a living. Its not a huge step away from rescuing a dog who needs it. Besides, he returns it all and will also heal parts of your heart you didn't know needed it. I mean, you need a shop dog. Case in point, Mortske and Duff are quite the team. If a dog can love Mortske, that's a huge statement for Mortske and for Duff, Ole Mortske might have a soul inside there after all. All jokes aside, God sent Theo to sweet little HotRod and answered her prayers, all on an Easter Sunday. There is a beautiful statement in there and your family have been further blessed.

  • I promise you will not regret keeping that dog. 9 years ago I too adopted a pitbull, he too came from a questionable first home, a drug dealers house in the neibourhood I lived in. He was being sought out by bylaw presumeably because the cops didnt want him in that house when they later raided it. He had been abused, and Iused to bring him rope toys to play with when he was in the small back yard of a townhome. He was apparently a poor drug house dog, I remember the owners saying he wsnt scary at all. He was a big beutiful pitbull/boxer mix in brindle. I tell you, that dog showed his intelligence almost immediately. He could even open locked doors and let himself out and did on occasion. In 9 years he was the most loyal family pet you could ever want. He was playful, and not once in 9 year did I wake up not bent over like a pretzel due to him having to sleep so close to me, right in the small of my back every single night. Sadly, fraido had to be put down this past fall, he had a massive lump from cancer that had shattered his femur in his hind leg.I've cried myself to sleep every night since. I promise that little pittie will defend your family and watch out for your kids every single day of his life.I've often thought to get naother just like the one I had, but with pitties being the subject of provincial bans in nearly every province in Canada, and me leaving the safe haven city I am in, it would not e fair to another when Ileave outof province in a year or two. I never considered owning a pittie ever, they were always the "big scary banned dogs". Having known theone I had, my heart breaks for him every single day.

We brought her to the vet and put her though the treatments and had 2 wonderful years with her. God I miss her . I wish you the best of luck with Theo and hope you get many years of joy with him.

  • God bless you for taking in Theo. As I'm writing this my Pitbull is sleeping next to me and also my Old English Bulldog who are both rescues. If you give Theo a teaspoon of Omega-3 fish oil on his food daily, his coat will have more shine and it will help moisturize his skin. If you can't find any omega-3 fish oil, you can feed him a couple of Omega-3 capsule supplements like you'd buy for yourself at the pharmacy. Another way to help his coat and skin is by occasionally feeding him a can of sardines. If you notice his skin is dry in some places, you can rub some coconut oil directly on him to moisturize his skin, also another option is putting a teaspoon in with his food. As for washing him, if you don't want to take him inside the house to wash him in the bathtub you could use a clean wheelbarrow as a bath tub. Dawn liquid dish soap, the one that is blue is mild enough to clean him without nasty chemical like the ones found in dog shampoo you can get at places like Walmart.

  • Has my little pittie for 13 years. She was the best dog I’ve ever had. She never harmed a soul. Never cared about any other dog. Rarely ever had to put her on a leash to walk her around anyone or anything. Always minded her own business. Once they choose you they become very loyal and will protect you with their life. And I would have done the same for her. Glad he found a good home.

  • My Porkchop does the same when he is around a cat, licking lips wagging, and (being i raised him to be vocal) whining. Porkchop likes to sniff them lick them and squish them lol. Best way to work with a dog around animals is to socialize them with the animal that is used to a dog. Keep Theo tight and let him meet a few animals that know how to socialize and test the waters slowly. But knowing you he will be fine. Might be a project but I know you all can do it!

  • Usually when Puddin talks about his family, he starts to tear up. But man, I'm over here tearing up thinking about my cat. She was a stray that I've been feeding for five years, but I already had a cat and they didn't get along so she stayed outside. She is a sweetheart and would always join me in the shop. My other cat passed away about a year ago, and I was heartbroken. But the stray girl could tell and she ran into my house a few days later and won't leave. They call it the cat distribution system, but it can work for dogs too.
