The Scary Moment Khanyisa Gets a Fright at Seeing a Rhino & the Whole Elephant Herd Come Running

There is nothing quite like the force of a united elephant front when it comes to protecting their herd! Especially the youngest in the herd.
On a walk back to the homestead in the evening, Khanyisa spies a rhino close by and screams, ears out, tail up! She bolts in the opposite direction of the rhino and the herd who are all following her home run after her to surround and protect the calf. This instinct also protects the whole herd as they gather together and offer more potency to their shield against any threat.
Bulls like Sebakwe and Mambo, but even bold cows like Bubi, will roam about on the outskirts to show their displeasure to outsiders and try to scare off the threat. Here Mambo does just that and flaps his heads about, causing his ears to make a thunderous clap that is also used to scare off whatever is causing the elephants alarm.
Our carers try to calm the herd down and continue onwards passed the rhino to the homestead. Because Khanyisa got such a fright and reacted with a scream, it alarmed the herd more than they would regularly be in the presence of a rhino - even one so close to their homestead.
Fishan moves speedily across the plains to get home - he is walking so well in this warm weather - but Bubi makes sure he is safe by waiting for him. Bubi and Lundi both display their concern with head shakes and turning around while the herd are on the move but Jabulani and Tokwe kindly check in on the humans, coming in close to Adine and the carers to make sure all is well and no one is left behind.
Adine manages to film the rhino in the area before heading to the orphanage to check on Khanyisa. The calf is surrounded by her favourite things: Lammie and Nungu, Stavros and sweet potatoes, as well as fresh marula fruit treats. Lammie takes over lookout duty before Willinton arrives for night duty!

  • I will never get over just how amazing the matriarch, Tokwe is. She has such love for both her human and elephant herds. When she came over to check on Adine, she was looking down at the camera, and her eyes were so soulful! This, and the video of her crashing through the bush when she was running to get back to the homestead in the dark, makes me love her even more! She is FIERCE!

    • Khanyisa, the poor little phant, she was too young to know how to handle the unfamiliar smell of an unfamiliar creature. Thank God that the older phants know how to handle it and go so out of their way to protect her. She is such a lucky phant to have older members of her kind love and protect her, and to have a team of sanctuary staff also love and protect her. Except for the tumultuous start very early on, she has had a great life

Having the big guys be able to look, not touch, for 2 months, was still a form of getting acquainted. Instinctively, she knew Adine and the guys, were gentle. Having a best friend in Lammie and a routine, was key. I loved how one big guy would leave the herd to say hello by themselves. • This wonderful video has brought tears to my eyes. Elephants are the most amazing beings. Their concern for herd members is beautiful to see! Poor little Khanyisa ... there are so many frightening things in the wild. But she can always rely on her extended family, which includes the humans who love and care for her.

  • Aw, poor baby, that was quite the frightened reaction! Absolutely amazing the speed with which the Herd moved to protect Khanyisa, and the way some of them react to possible danger, talk about no-nonsense! Mambo's ear clap was something to hear and great to see Fishan can move speedily when he needs to. Quite touching the way Jabulani and Tokwe made sure the 2-legged members of the Herd were ok too 😊 And heartwarming the way Bubi turned to wait for Fishan 🤗 Nothing like yummy food and the soothing presence of Stavros, Lammie and Nungu to calm sweet Miss Pinkylicious. Lammie was so cute, the way she was looking for Khanyisa when Adine was calling her. And nice 'goodnight' and 'hello' at the end with Stavros and Willinton, and quick glimpse of gorgeous Nandi too ❤🐘❤

  • At times you forget that despite being such a safe for the animals and carers there still are dangers nearby. The rhinos are there to be protected as well but sometimes they get a little too close for comfort and a little one like khanyisa can be surprised and get a fright . It's so nice to see how they protect each other and still have time to worry about the human part of the herd they do really have a big blended family

    • Aahm...I was ready to bolt from the time the herd got concerned and agitated. (The frenzy and the dread in the air was palpable. Like anything could happen). I looked around. In a situation like that, what do they have? Except for one half dead stand alone tree. If all hell breaks loose...And the Humans need to flee...All of them can't fit in that one tree. And what is a tree to an elephant (let alone a whole herd of them) anyways? All they can do is rock and destabilize the tree and then push it over. But noooooo. All these crazy brave heart nerves of steel superhuman angel People...Stay there. Calmly and reassuringly talking the Elephants down. The Elephants come over to check on them, do their further assessment of the situation. And eventually the moment passes. OK, but by then I was a nervous wreck and was just in stricken awe of the Elephants and the Humans. And started channelling Louis Armstrong 'What A Wonderful 🗺World'

  • I loved the fact that Jabulani came to check on the humans followed by Tokwe. I didn't realize that Khanyisa was afraid of Rhinos. And she is growing up fast. I guess she is too grown to say where she is going, leaving her "bedroom" and stepping outside for a while.Lol😂 And I always wondered, how does the carers get to the camp? Do they walk, does someone drop them off? I rarely see vehicles out there.💖
