  • My best friend worked at a Dodge dealership in the late 70's....called me up at 9am on a Saturday to come over to the dealership....on a Saturday!?. He insisted, I went. I pulled up, and there he was doing burnouts across the parking lot in a Li'l Red Express truck. I got to do a couple of passes. Fast forward 25yrs, he's got his own 40'x40' garage with a twin post lift doing detail and custom work on Mopar show cars. His own project was fully restoring a Li'l Red Express truck, along with replacing the stock 360 with a 440six-pack; had to use exhaust manifolds off a '68 Imperial to get it to fit. Traded it at a car show for a 40ft year-old RV😮

    • Back in 1979, a Chicago Country Radio station had a contest where you called in, guessing the exact price to the penny to win...I worked at a printing company and lots of the pressman had their radios tuned to this particular station..One fellow actually kept really good track of the guesses people phoned in and he WON the truck!! It was too cool for me..He was in his 50s at the time and I was 22. ...To me, it was Fantastic.

  • In 1991 I bought a brand new Chevy 454SS pickup. I will tell you first hand, the engine felt like a 305. In other words, the truck had absolutely no power. In my opinion, the engine was strangled with emission devices and simply couldn't breathe (intake and exhaust). I would periodically raise the hood to make sure there was a 454 under there, but that didn't change the fact that the truck was a pig. I also had several issues with it. In 1990 (I believe it's introduction), the truck had a turbo 400 transmission. In 1991 they put, I was told, the electronic transmission that was in the Corvette. One day while driving home from work (had about 10k miles on truck), the truck wouldn't shift out of first gear; so me and my "hotrod" truck drove all the way home at 35MPH! That issue, coupled with having no power, led me to sell it shortly thereafter. As far as Ford v Chevy, I hate to say Ford's Lightning pickup mopped the streets with the 454SS. Along with the Lightning, everyone knew the Syclone and Typhoon were the big boys on the block.

  • My 76 stepside short bed Chevy is definitely a muscle truck. 454, 4 speed, 3.73 positrac... In the 90s, it was built up with 12 inch wide wheels, 295/50s on all 4 corners, .30 over in the 454 with flat top Pistons, cam, Holley intake, headers, ported heads... It's more torque than you need in a short bed truck. Definitely fun

    • I have a 79 shortbed Silverado that my dad got in 80 with 5k miles on it. It was traded in at the dealership where he worked. Came with a 454. Nothing build in America in 79 would outrun it, from 0 to however fast you wanted to go. He was a manager at the Pontiac dealership, and they ran it against multiple Tran Ams from the last few years, even 400/4-speeds, and none of them would touch it. That was the last year the 454 was available in 1/2 tons until they made the SS454 in 90. I still have it, it's a drag truck now.

  • ALL Chevy truck engines came with 4-bolt main caps back in the day. 1970 was the last year the 396 cu in was offered and the 1st yr the 454 cu in was available. Chevy's 427 cu in and ford's 427 were heavy hitters also. Most of the performance engines up to early 1970 s had to be underrated due to car insurance rates. Insurance companies is what killed the high horsepower factory engines during that time. And let's not forget the OPEC oil embargo... Nuff Said.

    • 1/2 ton truck 454 engines mostly did not come with 4 bolt mains. The 366/427 big truck engines all came with 4-bolts, but they were not installed in smaller trucks. Only bigger ones, like dump trucks, fire trucks, etc.

When I hit 110 and looked in my rear view mirror he was getting smaller and smaller. I then slowed back down to 55. He wouldn't pass me but just followed me at 55 for miles until I had to turn.

I've also got a 77 econoline with a 429 cobra jet engine. It can fly for such a massive vehicle. I outran a raptor with said van. I dynoed the 429 with all its performance add ons at 900+ bhp at the rear. So if you see a silver econoline with a 6 inch lift and offroad tires don't even try because you'll see a van do a wheelstand
