Twenty One Pilots is back on the road and bringing the heat on 2022‘s ICY Tour! Sweetwater got an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at drummer Josh Dun‘s impressive rig with a full kit tour from drum tech Father John. Affectionately known as the “dragonscale kit,“ Josh Dun‘s stunning SJC custom rig mobilizes fans to move to the beat. Beyond that, Father John walks us through the kit’s intricate Roland electronic trigger system, DW hardware, Zildjian cymbals, and how his Sweetwater Sales Engineer TJ gets critical support to Twenty One Pilots on the road day and night - even at gigs overseas. Using the triggers to open the gates on the drum mics is next level live drum sound engineering (and potentially a useful studio technique, too!).
I like to take this one step further on live rigs by swapping the gate for a dynamic EQ (usually Waves F6). That gives me a bit more fine grained control - you can effectively create different release times per frequency band. Short decay for HF (minimizes cymbal bleed), long decay for LF (avoids accidentally cutting off resonance on toms).
It is. Ellie Goulding’s and Katy Perry’s team does this for s while too. Very usefull.
I don’t really get that part about the kit. What does gating the sound mean in drums?
@@MrLJdizzle A gate cuts off an audio signal from a microphone until a certain threshold is reached. It helps prevent unwanted noise bleed into microphones. On a noisy stage in a loud venue (like how every Twenty One Pilots show is), leaving drum mics "open" all the time would pump all those unwanted sounds through the PA system and monitoring system. By using a hard gate on each drum mic and then using a drum trigger to open the gate, the live sound engineer can precisely control how long each drum mic is passing signal. It's a useful way to keep unwanted sounds out as well as precisely control the length of decay for each drum mic. You could make the snare tight and snappy with a fast decay or long and drawn out and change that from song to song even. It's a pretty brilliant way to have a ton of control over the sound of every drum without using samples to replace the real drum sounds.
@@DaveMcCall Oh wow that’s brilliant. Thanks for the detailed explanation!!
Best drum tech breakdown I've ever heard. And Josh is one of my favourite drummers on this amazing planet!! Cheers to t tech dude. 🍻✌️
So so so glad TOP are finally getting rig tours, I've always wanted to know the details
very cool to see the whole setup, thanks Father John!
The audio engineering going into this kit is absolutely insane
One of my favorite people in the world, all the best Josh
Josh Dun have always been one of most stylish drums there is.
Let's go!

Never knew about the MIDI-to-CAT5 converter - that's really cool and really smart!
I have been searching for a video explaining how they use the drum pads, track pedals, and MIDI live for so long and this video was just awesome!!
Another great source is hybrid drummer.
I’m not a drummer so this is all gibberish to me. I just like the behind the scenes stuff with concerts plus Josh Dun is a fucking LEGEND. Really cool video. A TØP stage tour would be dope.
ive been wanting a video like this foreverr, amazing vid
Love this rig tour so much!
Great stuff, always an amazing show!
Excellent walkthrough, and such a sick setup!
Killer rig!
This is amazing!
I was mind blown when he started explaining the gate triggers, I've never heard of that or thought of such a solution
Wow it's hard to figure my brain out and Josh works all them brains this dude is a next level drummer and his stage presence is beyond next level
can't wait!!
Mind blown!
Father John is the man
Thank you
Looks simple but it's complicated and advanced 😍
Went to Utah for the Icy Tour, best drummer ever!
Josh is a very good drummer
I love the twenty one pilots
I understood about 6 words that he said but it sounds really cool
The drum brain part is very confusing, I still don’t understand how it works although I rewatched a few times, but great walkthrough though!
Wouldn’t the TMC-6 be a quicker, more solid midi converter instead of the TD-50? Iconnectivity has some cool midi to cat5 interfaces too. But I actually dig this diy in Pelicase setup more tbh 😬 Cool rig run down!
@FatherJohn I'm baffled as to how the Controlled Sound X lasts longer than the P77. I thought the more plies you had is the more durable it is but that's astounding since I prefer the CS-X cuz of the open sound...can always muffle it to sound like the P77 but not vice versa.
@sweetwater any clue into WHAT is running the tracks on the ipad? very cool to have a quick view into that!
I thought his dad, John, was his drum tech.
Lol I know Right!!
I’m sad that we didn’t have a SAI themed zildjian drum sticks :(
Someone is measuring the Impulse response of the venue lol
I heard that too 😆
Someone is tuning the PA system for sure
Triggers to open the gates?? Time to go looking for how-to vids
What´s the latency of the SPD-SX and the Triggers on the Drum-heads? (from hit to PA)
I really wish he would play it at the end
What’s the name of the background song that is playing in the beginning?
The tech really loves his job, but still he could hit that kit
father john
How do they keep the kit from sliding around on that acrylic floor? I saw some velcro tape? Josh hits pretty hard which means his feet hit hard as well. Any ideas?
Just a good drum rug will do that
@@sambennett2319 But, they don't have a drum rug...
he has had them velcroed down
What's the name of Josh's click track
Where is ringo?
I thought Josh was out of the band?

The rack is a 12x8
Yeah I was about to comment that too
Yeah, was about to say some of the sizes don’t match to what he’s saying, the popcorn snare looks like his usual 6x10 as well, a 5x12 would look a lot flatter
Also the stack Is a 10 a custom efx and a custom 12 efx
I think he know tuning and the electronics better then the sizes 😂😂
i somehow cant find the 12in A efx@@Spooky0910
I think that rack is 12x8
🌹 🤘🤘🎉💙💚
Pinstripes on the Tom bottoms?! Naturally Ambassadors will sound better 😁
Yeah I’ve never heard of anyone using pinstripes on the reso side
I’ve been using pinstripes on the resos for a few years now and they sound good to me, real punchy and boomy
amazing drumset but thers no way thats a 12x6 rack tom its deeper
What just happened?

First
This kit is way too complicated haha
These guys only play with backing tracks. I'm out.
They have a full band for 80% of the songs though?
So complicated lol
And to think how great Ringo was without all of that!!!
and to think that was 60 years ago! 😃
And to think how great Josh still is without that.
Josh usually only uses a 6-7 piece drum set lmfao. Obviously they’re gonna add more pieces and tech for tour shows
Saw them in concert, Very odd. I'm not sure how much music was live, less than 10 percent. It was 2 guys lip syncing to big screens. It was interesting but not a traditional "music " concert, more like theater.
Yeah I can tell you’re lying
