The Oplot-M Main Battle Tank (MBT) is a further development of the previous Oplot, which is based on the T-84. This MBT was revealed in 2008. It is an improved version, rather than entirely new design. Main components of this tank were developed back in the 1990s. This MBT completed Ukrainian Army trials, however it was not ordered by the Ukrainian Army due to funding problems. Thailand ordered 49 of these tanks. Thai tanks have some minor modifications to meet local requirements and are referred as Oplot-T. First tanks were delivered to Thailand in 2013. Deliveries are rather slow due to ongoing military conflict in Ukraine and by 2016 only 20 of these tanks were delivered.
The Oplot-M MBT is fitted with Duplet (Nozh-2) built-in Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA) of new generation, that protects against tandem warheads. It is claimed to be superior to the Russian Kontakt 5 ERA armor. Protection of hull sides was also improved. The tank is fitted with Shtora countermeasures system, which reduced hit probability of enemy ATGW with semi-automatic guidance. It has been reported that this MBT can also be fitted with Zaslon active protection system.
The Oplot-M main battle tank is armed with a 125 mm fully-stabilized smoothbore gun, fitted with a carousel-type autoloader. Vehicle is capable of firing 9K119M Reflex (NATO Designation AT-11 Sniper-B) gun-launched anti-tank guided missiles. These missiles are launched in the same manner as ordinary munitions. Maximum range of fire is 5 000 m. A total of 40 rounds are carried inside the hull.
Hope you enjoy!!

T-84 M Oplot Main Battle Tank
Two layers of ERA? Tandem Warheads: “Wait, that’s illegal.”
Good fun.
Relikt is 2 layers of ERA
@@divinesan7786 no it's not.
SingleTrackSlayer046 i mean it is two layers of ERA. It is 2 times stronger than Kontakt-5
@@divinesan7786 It's 1 layer but with two steel plates instead of only one from Kontakt-5
Nice video , i enjoyed the review . Just a little thing , Oplot M uses the *Varta* optronic countermeasure system instead of shtora . Varta literally means "guards" , the tank can fire the local designed Kombat ATGM (its range is also 5000 meters), and can be fitted with an indigenously designed camouflage system called KONTRAST.
Looks like designers played too much Battlefield 2142
Or just enough, this thing is beautiful!
Now they just need to make an actual functioning Titan.
They didn't, T-84M Oplot was designed years before Battlefield 2142!
That game was basicly awesome
the t80 was a feared and respected tank back in 1999/2000 when I did my cr2 training, so if this is an improved version I bet it could still hold its own against most mbt's out there.
T80 would have made a difference. When doing mass spearhead attacks, most would be wiped out in one frontal hit. But after Aberdeen testing, they discovered the t80 could survive one frontal hit. Possibly enough to tip the scale.
It can't actually as Ukraine can't produce modern tank rounds, so it's limited by old 80s vintage ammo.
@@humansvd3269 frontal hits from what and when? The original 105mm m1 wouldn't be able to take a hit from it either.

T84 is basically T80 with a new turret, upgraded armor, new engine etc
Alex4n3r T72 and T80 are completely different types of machines. T84/T80 are based on T64 while T90 is based on T72.

@@TheFalseShepphard I second this
It is very simple! During the soviet era, there were 2 main production centers for building tanks (in the city of Kharkiv (Ukraine) and in Leningrad/St.Petersburg). During the WWII the center from Leningrad was moved to Omsk (Siberia). The most powerful tank center of Kharkiv, famous for its T-34, was also moved to russia (Nizhny Tagil, Sverdlovsk oblast) till the end of the war (with all its equipment, engineers and workers). When the war was over, some people were allowed to move back to their native town. They had to build a new center in Kharkiv from a scratch (if something wasn't moved to russia, it was destroyed during the war). So, after the WWII, 4 tank centers appeared in the Soviet Union - Kharkiv, Leningrad, Omsk and Nizhniy Tagil. In the late 50s, the soviets decided to develop a new tank. The T-64, designed in Kharkiv (Ukraine), won the competition. It was adopted by the soviet government to replace all of the existing soviet tanks. T-64 was armored better than a heavy tank, with the same firepower, but its weight was similar to a medium tank. That's how an mbt appeared! That was achieved by low volume, covered by armor - super compact engine and a gearbox, a crew of 3 and automatic loader for a main gun. The Soviet government decided to produce this tank on several factories, including Kharkiv, Leningrad and Tagil. The first t-64, made in Kharkiv, together with the whole set of documentation were send to Tagil and Leningrad. But…the russians said: no way, it's to complicated for us, we don't like it (it`s made in Ukraine!!! :), we’ll make it in our way. And they put an engine from BT-7, wheels from a tractor, and a turret from a WWII tank (you have to sit on the top of it, if you want to use your machinegun). That is how a t-72 appeared. The soviets said ok, it’s our own russian tank! We will produce it as a cheaper version alongside with t-64 and will send it to dictators and terrorists all over the world! I bet you have forgotten about Leningrad and Omsk! Yes, they said ok, we will put an engine from a helicopter to a T-64. That’s how a T-80 appeared! Cose the US did it! And the soviet government said ok, let’s produce T-80 all over the Soviet Union… And folks from Kharkiv said ok, let us see… eeehhh but it’ll be much better with our own diesel engine. That’s how a t-80ud appeared. Then the Soviet Union collapsed, because they spent all of its money on tanks. The russians said that t-72 and t-90 are the best (the cheapest). In Ukraine a T-84 oplot/oplot-m/oplot-t appeared as a further development of t-80ud. So we've got a t-64/80ud/84 family, and a T-72/90 bastard.
The Leopard 2 can cross a river under water, so there is at least one western tank that can :P
I thought every mbt could do that??
Ever mbt can cross rivers. Duh
Every MBT can submerge underwater at least once..
Why would you and risk getting it stock while submerged under water
@@chadmcclure2972 there is actualy a very low chance to get it stuck under Water since normaly beforehand Pioneers and divers would make sure that the river spot is good for fording, making sure there are no excesive dips or big rocks in the way. Why would you do it? while it isnt hard to build improvised bridges nowadays, most of em arent rated for vehicles of this weight class. many times its also not suitable to build improvised bridges in certain rivers and its generaly faster to set up a leo for fording a river, i think its about half an hour to an hour to do so
Also some of the T-80 tanks sent to Chechnya had been sitting for a some time and their reactive armour had been stripped of the explosives inside them. So the tanks were protected with only the reactive armour boxes, and well you know how that went.
Meh, poor excuse honestly.
Thanks for this Matsimus! This is one of my favorite tanks, nice to see you make a video on it. :D
When they sent the T-80BVs into Chechnya they often didn't load the ERA cartridges into the slots. Ugh. Pinheads.

I think the Leopard 2 has a pretty deep fording capability. I could be wrong though.
only.... is good 4m is enough for nearly every river in Europe..and there is no problem to add more tube moduls to increase high to get deeper...the real important part is that the tank has lenz pumps to get rid of water inside the tank, good seals that reduce water comeing inside to a minium (you never can get a Tank 100% waterproof because the sealings are constantly stressed by dust and dirt during regular service so you always have some dripping water inside under water (personal experience I drove the Leo2 under water twice) which is realy fun
Afaik 4 meters is not limited by the rube length but rather for the ani water sealing that is designed to withstand water pressure up to 4 meters deep ( with some margin probably) as i heard.
pff leopard 2 is bettr in any way ... than this can and im not nationalist or anylike that, i fact im with russians but leo 2 it is just better in anyway.. the french lecrelc also
the Leclerc had troubles in first batches, but french managed and corrected them ! now, the F3 variant is a nasty little and very mobile tank !
leopard 2 has front armour and a good gun. the sides are basicially the same from the leopard 2 prototype.
Another well put together and informative video, well done mate, keep up the good work!
Great video Matsimus! I have been fascinated by the entire line of Soviet Cold War AFV's and I am glad to be able to gleen more information on these amazing machines, so good job pal. I do plane on building a model of this one as soon as I can get my hands on one! Cheers.
Awesome, let the tank analysis videos continue to roll out! These are my favorite (technology-related) videos on KZhead at the moment. Thanks again +Matsimus Gaming :D :D :D
Wow I was waiting for this video :) Thank you!
Been waiting long time for this review :D
favorite tank right up! love your vids
Actually when it comes to deep fording the Leopard I's and II's are built to do that with a single snorkel fitting over the commander's hatch.
I love the videos matt! You finally did this tank :D
Great work Sir thank you
*That* is a beautiful tank.
tommyzDad ...I know nothing about tanks...Um from Ireland and we don't even have an army...but this is a stunningly beautiful battle tank
Great review 👍🏼
from what i can tell of the fotage, it still uses the old t64/t80 autoloader, so the ready ammo is not in fact away from the crew. in fact, this autoloader has a more dangerous ammo positioning than the t72 autoloader, quite literally surrounding the crew, fully exposed.
Thanks for doing the tank I requested 😄
Nice piece of kit, love the nonsesense testing that proves what it's worth! Cheers
The German MBT Leopard 2 has fording, wading capabilities and outfitted with an extra turret can drive on the bottom of a water obstacle up to 6 m deep
like how well protected the sides are and the front of the turret with no gaps between reactive armor unlike some t72 models with the front of the turret being virtually unprotected
Nice Video Matsimus and sorry, but i have a question. Doesn't the Leopard 2 also have ability to dive with a deep water wading kit ?
Nice video Matsimus i really like it and im sorry for advertising my video on your channel. I wont be doing that again.

Matsimus Gaming Can you do video about T-90ms and Iranian T-90ms
yeah, I saw you comment on the reveal of the Iranian copy, would love to hear your full opinion on the tank and the new Russian t-90m upgrade.
Dark Ronin He rant3d? What did he say?
The Leopard 2 is fully submersible - however, it can only reach a depth of four meters (as opposed to the Oplot's five).
can you do a video on the arjun mk1 and 2 ive heard alot about it but its mostly not based on thorough reserch and i would love to hear your take on it
Matsimus can discuss your thoughts on foreign American tank variants as the M51 Super Sherman, Brazilian X1A1 Stuart and Chilean M24 Chaffe with the 6cm cannon.
Can you do a video on liquid munition propellants?
Great video mate. 😆🖒
Will you do a video on the Archer artillary system?
Rullstolsboken I've asked him that too... Archer, Archer!!!
Absolutely love those slav mbts, expecially T-80 family since my father told me that their engine sound awesome )))) (guess it will sound different as it uses diesel engine tho)
Don't know where have you read that it has separated from the crew ammo storage but its not. So it has the same problem as all T-64/T-72 types - being a death trap for its crew if the armor is breached.
The Leopard I & II have a wading capability. In theory an Abrams does too, however I've never seen it actually demonstrated.
I LOVE this tank! I wana ask if thsi tank can deal 1 vs 1 agains T 90, M1a2 Abrams, Challanger 2? Greethings from Bulgaria!
I'm impressed with this tank......
Now this tank series developed. First was T-84, T-84 "Oplot", T-84 "Oplot-M" and now there is BM "Oplot" (Battle Machine). The last often is considered one of the older.
Oplot M is the newest one, and the BM Oplot is the 2nd newest one.

Ukraine has a good tradition like Germany in tank construction, the engineers from both countries should join forces.
Hey Matsimus. nice vid, like always. One question. Could you do some videos about cold war/ modern era conflicts analysis/ strategic review of them? So what strategic actions were made and why in a conflict like the corean war or the yom kippur war or the iraq wars. That would be very interesting
BM Oplot are mostly covered by Nozh-2 Era around the tank side skirt are "Duplet" design with 2 layer of Nozh-2 stacked from the front to rear of the vehicles and 3 layer on the front turret and 2 layer (not sure) on the glacis and most of the area on the turret were protected by Nozh-2 Era but most of the picture are not equip it but noticable with a small steel pipe on top of the turret . Gun were similar to Russian use on T-90 while Ukrainian developing new gun*ammo called "Vitiaz" still in prototype but still very rare to find in picture or specific information but claim to be as good as US M829A3.. the big big commander parascope are packed with everything and it can be use as the Rangefinder or anything that Gunner have . Early BM Oplot send to RTA have battery problem but seem to already be fixed . and Order will delay so RTA decide to order VT-4 (planned 150 units) for different division to replace M48. and seem RTA still looking for new Tank that different from BM Oplot or VT-4. But the Gun Mantlet seem to lack protection like any other Russian Style cannon except on T-90MS . The 12.7mm or 14.5mm anti tank gun is pretty much not as effective at close range or urban combat since it have low gun elevation in both Depression and Elevation .
@8:30 the Leopard 2 actually has the capability to cross water obstacles
On a really weird level I love the t-80 and any of its derivatives, this tank is at the top of my favorite tanks not a clue why, Im a American and I think tank is sexy af
Hey Matsimus, would you please make a video about Chinese VT-4 MBT?
There were not "hundreds of T-80s knocked out by Chechen rockets", the total number of the lost tanks during both wars is around 200 and only 60 were total loses. Most of those were T-72. The biggest problem of T-80 was its gas turbine but it is related to all turbine powered tanks when you have to keep it running non-stop.
Great video!!!! Can you do a video on the ERC 90 French vehicle?
Matsimus if we want to request you to do a tank review on a certain tank how do we let you know because I would like you to do the Chinese type 99 tank, I believe that's what it's called.

The system is "shtora", pronounced like Sean Connery playing an Italian, who wants to "a-go to the a-shtora" :-P Great videos, as usual!
Soviet Tank since T-62 have the hunter killer ability, but the TC only got a night vission and lack laser range finder. T-84's TC sight is a thermal sight with laser range finder
matimus do you think that the British need to update our mbt for modern combat or even maybe profuse a new tank

Thailand decided to cancel the procurement of this tanks in favour of Chinese VT-4 due to delay. BTW can you do an overview of VT-4 also known as MBT-3000 in the future please. Its a tank that should not be underestimate just because its carry "Made in China" tag.
Rem For The Win That's such a shame this tank would of been good for you unlike some Chinese tank.
The Raging Storm My country doesn't buy Chinese tanks. I'm from Malaysia which operate Polish made PT-91 with Malaysia specifications.
Rem For The Win Last week, Col. Gen. Oleg Salyukov, commander-in-chief of the Russian Army, paid a 3-day visit to Thailand. Reporting on the visit, the first of its kind in a decade, has been extremely sparse. That has left experts wondering whether Bangkok is considering the purchase of Russian T-90 tanks to replace its canceled order of Ukrainian T-84s.
PrezVonPlays Terrain yes. But the Philippine is better off acquiring more warship since "you know who" is always harassing Philippine's EEZ. Hope the new frigates is deliver ASAP for deterrent. As for the rebel in the south, better buy helis and MRAP.
Kieran Jones What you meant is there's a conspiracy about Russian trying to swap the purchase of Ukrainian made T-84 for Russian made T-90MS? I don't mine cause T-90MS is more sophisticated and powerful than Ukrainian T-84. No hard feelings for any Ukrainian that read this comment.
Does it have protection against anti-submarine weapons and detection systems? Those ERA tiles could also be utilized as stealth tiles.
Right at the beginning you can see those ERA skirts scrapping on the ground when the tank climbs the step obstacle.
This a this a very impressive to have 2 in 1the tank and submarine:) Well done.
Matsimus can you do a compare T84M and T-90MS? Like what are the difference. Did not find any comparison on youtube
Because it's a prototype, they will be as they are seen by the customer. The only question is price.
Hello Matsimus! Are you planning to make a video on gun launched ATGM systems? I'm really interested in your opinion, as you seem to know a lot about tank warfare, both in theory and practice. I usually hear split opinions concerning them, and we all know the disaster MGM-51 was. Again, great video and great content!
Can you do an in-depth, full-length vehicle analysis of the United States Army's M2 Bradley IFV with information and assessment of its modern variants? I'd like to know more about the M2A3 versus the M3A3 Bradley variants and any future upgrade packages the U.S. and or NATO might procure or are developing. Thanks so much for your hard work and excellent videos! :)
It'd be very interesting to get the analysis and opinion of a former Warrior IFV crewmember such as yourself, Matsimus. :)
Heya Matsimus could you have a video about the Arjun MBT used by the Indian Army?
Matsimus can you explain us why western tanks haven't adopted the eastern tanks feature of launching ATG missiles through their main gun? It seems such a useful ability for first hit beyond the guns ordinary range.
Maybe because it is very rare when you actually see a tank at 5000m, most of the time, ground is not perfectly flat, so shooting at such a distance is no use, especially since there are more and more anti missile systems on tanks, but it is true that it is still interesting in some cases .
wuerzelburg some of the leapords can
Aesir Knight tv guided missile and boom from blue sky literally.
if i am right merkavas can do this.
1) Initially, gun launched ATGMs were necessary to make up for early model T-64s' (9K112 Kobra) and T-72s' (9M119 Svir series) inferior fire-control systems. These originally could not ensure a high-enough hit probability at ranges above 1300m, so a guided missile solution was necessary. Modern FCS can enable acceptably high hit probability, so the original reasons no longer apply. 2) The actual effectiveness of the shaped charge(s) in a gun launched missile is less than the equivalent calibre main gun HEAT round. This is known to be true of Kobra, Svir and Refleks. The reason is simply that there is always less space for a shaped charge payload in a gun-launched missile, than in the equivalent diameter HEAT round. 3) The actual effectiveness of even tandem shaped charge warheads against tank frontal armour is, these days at least, questionable. Pay no heed to estimated penetration values, those have wildly varying test standards, and are basically marketing gimmicks. Consider what the phrase, "this tandem shaped charge penetrates 1200mm of RHAe", could mean. 4) Missiles take a very long time to travel to the target. At the relevant ranges where gun-launched ATGMs might be useful these days (3000-5000m), a competently crewed, properly-equipped tank is likely to have noticed the incoming missile and can take steps to break guidance, rendering it ineffective. You cannot however run or hide from a sabot round "on-the-way". 5) With proper FCS, common tank guns actually can easily make hits far beyond "ordinary ranges" ;) 6) If you really wanted to launch a missile from a tank, you may as well put a much bigger missile in a smaller thin skinned vehicle that is sitting further away under cover. That is why the two Western gun-launched ATGMs, the Shillelagh and LAHAT are nothing like their Russian counterparts. Shillelagh was an old, chunky 152mm weapon meant to be fired from the Sheridan's, MBT70's or the M60A2's low/medium pressure gun. LAHAT was developed because the effectiveness of Israeli 105mm guns (which are the bulk of their tank guns) is no longer competitive. It is a 105mm missile, and the 120mm version is still a 105mm missile. Crucially, it is SALH and hence capable of top-attack which enables a smaller warhead to defeat well armoured tanks, unlike all currently deployed Russian gun-launched ATGMs, which are laser beam riding. Furthermore, it is also said to have a range "multiple times greater than current gun-launched missiles", and can be fired from cover and guided by a forward observer, indicating a completely different way of using it compared to the Russian beam-riders. It can also be fired from low-pressure guns since most of the propulsion comes from the rocket motor, unlike the Russian beam-riders, enabling it to be deployed on otherwise very short-ranged 105mm armoured car/IFV/light tanks, like the M1178 MGS. In a way, it seems like an idea more akin to the 120mm KSTAM Korean Top-attack munition. That is not a missile, but a gun-fired EFP "skeet", that is fired at high angles over a target area to float down by parachute onto enemy tank formations, before autonomously identifying a target and detonating. In both cases the idea is to enable tanks to thin out the crowd before they get into engagement range, rather than actually fighting enemy tanks with these munitions directly. 7) The most important reason though has already been mentioned - except in the desert, what tank fights another tank face-to-face at 5000m range?
T-84 'FrenkenTank' 😉 RE fording ability. Ukraine has one of the largest wetlands in europe, being able to operate in such waterlogged environments would be a big advantage.

Well the T-84M Oplot was from the original T-84 which is a new variant that came from the T-80UD. Best to note it’s the diesel engine for the T-80UD, which lead to the evolution of the T-84, and the T-84M Oplot.

Astounding! However, a notable flaw is the width, and it seems to use the same hull as the T-80, so hull armor should be the same. Would make sense for a Super T-90, with similar sideskirts and maybe different turret design.
No, armour is slightly better, even without nozh or duplet era.
With this tank and the announcement that Ukraine is starting development of a light-weight fighter like the Mig-29, they're really positioning themselves to no longer be reliant on Russia. In a decade or so, with their economy doing better with more trade with the EU, their technical skills improved, and technological interaction with western countries, they will be poised to fill the large gap in the market between the more expensive and advanced western equipment and the cheaper but comparatively crude Russian/Chinese equipment. India might be a competitor there, as while their economy is booming right now, their R&D isn't. Almost all of their more modern stuff is bought from Russia (Su-30 MKI's, T-72's and T-90's, BMP-2's, and a renamed Adm. Gorshkov mini-carrier). However, they have built in small numbers the Arjun Tank and the HAL Tejas light fighter, and have 2 more carriers in the works, although, again, a lot of the work of development was in cooperation with Russian companies.
Matsimus could you make a video about ex Yugoslavian M84 and his later variants like M84 A4 Sniper or M84 A5 Degman boat Croatian tank versions now... Please
Interesting to note, this tank has a massive recoil that is probably not that great for the crew. Meaning, any claimed rate of fire while moving is going to be a bit of an issue. The M1 is able to deal with that recoil very efficiently through that HUGE turret & gas cylinder on the barrel.
I
The Ukrainians are the guys that gave us the T34. They also gave us the T44, T54, T64 and T84. These have been their hi-tech vehicles. Other companies in Russia built cheaper lower tech variants such as T72 was the cheaper tank to the T64. Originally the T80 was called the T84 and the name change came about to confuse NATO. When the Ukraine gained independence they changed their build back to T84. So Originally both tanks were the same with minor equipment differences. Check out OSPREY Press T80 tank book for more details. Enjoyed your introduction to the latest version of the T84.
Hey Matsimus! I don't think you have done a video on the Ukrainian T-64BM Bulat. It looks like a pretty interesting tank you might want to check out.
Matsimus have you ever seen a tank damaged due to an ammo rack explosion?
One very important thing. On Strong Europe Tank Challenge Ukraine announced to bring new T-84BV tank, but couldn't do it, because both prototypes was inoperable at the moment. So they brought T-84B variant. And during the chalkenge it showed it's total incapability... I don't remember what exactly was there... Engine failure or something, also it couldn't shoot precisely enough. If you interested, just google "Strong Europe Tank Chalkenge 2018 T-84" and you'll get all tge info. So... It may be all the hi-tech, but it worthless if it doesn't work.
Sentar The first prototypes of the tank "T-84" stronghold "made in 2009, 10 pcs. What do you mean, both do not work? At the competition "Strong Europe Tank Challenge" there were 5 tanks, and only one had problems with fire control, the rest had a perfect shooting. In the overall standings, points were not collected for reasons: the incompatibility of some disciplines with such a small tank in height. But the new tank BM "OPLOT" is a completely different machine, at the moment they are made for the army of Ukraine, in the amount of 300 pcs.
Can you do the All Khalid mbt? BTW nice vid

If you have some time it would be interesting to look up the T64 Bulat upgrade - pretty unique in the sense that for cheap Ukraine is modernizing it's tank park and might correlate with raytheon upgrade for m60 you've mentioned previously.
The T64 upgraded to the Bulat version can easily fight T90 on pair, while the Raytheon M60 has zero armor to withstand modern AT munitions.
its nice to see new videos but what about vessels im waiting for them :D
