Moeletsi Mbeki’s rallying cry for business to become active in politics to save SA

Political analyst and Chairperson of the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), Moeletsi Mbeki says it’s evident from high unemployment, collapsing infrastructure, a deteriorating healthcare system and ailing security apparatus that the ANC government is not coping with its responsibilities and that the global status of South Africa has declined enormously. In an interview with BizNews, he also criticised the negative impact of black economic empowerment on the economy and on social cohesion. Change would be possible through the 2024 elections, he said, by a coalition of opposition parties. Mbeki called for the private sector to play an active role in politics, urging individual business leaders to intervene rather than simply advising the government. However, he dismissed the notion of a messiah-like figure driving this process. - Linda van Tilburg

  • The problem with this interview is that Mr Mbeki is not widely reported on black language radio or press. The rural black is reliant on the the AN C so water and electricity are not issues for them. What has to be hammered home is the failure to fulfil promises.

    • & owned by who? I'd only concur with you if I was only focused on both good quality operations and services besides on ownership. Ownership comes with power and control on the daily operations and services. It can be worse to impose exclusion and collide with other people/cooperates(local/global). Thus knowing what the global operations do in collision with others~ neoliberal colonisation, using "third world/developing countries financial aid instruments". Looking beyond what your daily needs

  • Linda van Tilburg presented her questions from a position of misinformation. How does she think the BEE policy was the settlement that was reached through CODESA? She also seems to think the Constitution was legislated for economic empowerment ONLY, supported by ANC supporters only..... 9:14 She makes it worse by not receiving the correction from Mbeki, but continues that line of questioning. This was disturbing to follow.

  • We all know/fear who the next president will be: Julius. We need to end private funding of politics. We need to build into proportional representation, a mechanism to prevent dictatorship by small, often extremist parties. End the oligarchy and kleptocracy. After Cyril do we need another businessman, another oligarch. We need to reform BEE and affirmative action. We need a new mass movement to force reform on our political system. Moeletsi Mbeki does not seem to understand the limitations of privatisation.

  • There are a number of potential problems that can arise when government and big organizations team together. These include: Conflicts of interest: When government officials work closely with big organizations, there is a risk that they will be influenced by the organization's interests, rather than the public interest. This can lead to decisions that benefit the organization at the expense of the public. Lack of transparency: When government and big organizations work together, there is often a lack of transparency about the decision-making process. This can make it difficult for the public to hold government officials accountable for their actions. Wasteful spending: When government and big organizations work together, there is a risk that taxpayer money will be wasted. This can happen when organizations charge exorbitant fees for their services, or when government officials make poor decisions about how to spend money. Cronyism: When government and big organizations work together, there is a risk that government officials will award contracts to their friends or allies, even if those friends or allies are not the most qualified for the job. This can lead to a loss of efficiency and a waste of taxpayer money.

  • Moeletsi is just like Steenhuisen and the DA, fierce critics of a BEE policy, while offering no alternatives. The BEE policy was well meaning, the problem is the misapplication of BEE. I have yet to hear what Moeletsi is proposing as an alternative to BEE policy, he just keeps quite in this regard. To me Moeletsi is just pandering to the whims of big business and big corporates who asserts that government must have no role in coming with policies whose intention is to positively enhance the socio-economic conditions of all citizens.
