  • I’ve been trying to find builders who build without mods because I play on the Xbox One. This is incredible and the way you explained everything helps out so much! Easy to understand and even easier to actually be able to lay out and build. Please do more videos with the new DLCs.

  • This is the closest I’ve seen to what I want to build. I want a defensible (purge only as P v E coop) ringed wall with smaller themed crafting buildings inside, with a large (wide and tall) central tower. The large size of some places (ex great wheel of pain, large animal pen etc) make me a bit worried about the footprint I’ll need, as well as finding an appropriate flatish area in Siptah. Perhaps I’ll try playing around in single player creative mode following some of your designs here to get an idea of what might work). Thanks!

    @HandyHanderson@HandyHanderson3 жыл бұрын
    • I explained the planning process of the city later in the video. I started off by placing the foundations for the unique buildings (arena & house of worship), then placed the foundations for the exterior wall, then I placed the foundations for where the rest of the houses went (this part I winged it). Once all of the foundations were placed, and I was satisfied with the layout, I would begin actually building up the structures. Hope this helps!

  • DnD? I should have guessed. This has been very educational, particularly the city planning bit. I usually plot things out as I go, only starting with a general idea which often leads to a waste of both time and resources. The building design is impressive, both reasonably compact and detailed. I always end up with much larger structures to accomodate for details on the exteriors and interiors not interfering with one another, but clearly I have a bit to learn there. I did find it a bit amusing that we had almost exactly the same idea for city walls, though I guess options are a bit limited in that regard if you're going for the medieval look. Overall, impressive work and great video. We will watch your career with great interest.

  • mh... once again, a visually rather impressive vid. but ... crenelations ... please build a chest-high wall first, then place these on top. the idea behind them was that you could stand upright and be fully covered, step to the side, lose an arrow or crossbow bolt, then step back and be safe while you reload or just to evade return fire. also, walls never had inward-facing defenses or cover. the idea was that, should the wall be taken by an enemy, they don't gain any cover from attacks by defenders further inside the fortifications, e.g. on roofs of houses or a second wall. gatehouses would have two gates. one exterior (with a portcullis to trap enemies if one can afford that), and one interior. between those two gates & portcullis would be enough space for a full wagon (incl draft animal), so about 2-3 blocks in the game. on the roof of that enclosed space would be "murder holes" aka slits to fire through or through which hot/burning stuff (e.g. heated sand or boiling oil set on fire) can then be poured. regarding city layout usually, cities are arranged around 3 locations - the residence of the local lord (e.g. a manor or castle, usually with its own en-walled area either completely inside the city walls, or touching/overlapping the walls in which case its likely to be "behind" the city aka in a more defensible location where the city shields the residence), the religious center (e.g. a church, chapel or shrine), and the market place - an open area (usually incl. a well or fountain as a water source) another major consideration for towns and cities (but not villages or hamlets) is grain and wood storage locations. a city eats a LOT of grain. let's say each person eats 1-2 lb of grain per day and you got even just 500 ppl in your town. that's half a ton to a ton of grain per day. given that it takes half a year to three-quarters of a year between harvests, that's 200-300 days of food one needs to store. that's 250-ish tons of just grain. for a fairly tiny town. then factor in that as much as 30-50% of any stored grain spoiled due to rot or vermin and ... yeah, 400-500 tons of grain storage for a small town of 500 souls wouldn't be excessive ... (though a good portion of this would probably be stored by each family In their basement ... say half of it). and if its a farming community that sells grain? several times as much would be likely. similarly, ppl drink half a gallon (2-3 liters) per day. that is a lot of water that needs to be available. wells can handle some of that, but there is a reason many cities tried to be next to even just a tiny stream or better a full river or lake. in addition, ppl need wood to cook and to heat their rooms. medieval houses were notoriously drafty and cold, thus a lot of wood was needed to make it through the winter. multiply by the size of the town and you'll need several reasonably large roofed areas purely used for storing firewood... on top of that, most towns had 3-4 separate areas. one for the well-off citizens, usually in the safer areas and closer to the local lord's residence, often within their own walled section of the city. one for the craftsmen, usually near a river if there was one. smiths are loud, breweries and tanners stink to hell and back. you'd want that downstream and downwind of the city and separate from the living spaces one for the ppl to live in, sometimes separated into an area that turned into slums and one that is just low-to-mid-level regular folks aka commoners. these would, in cities and larger, be dominated by multi-family houses. yes, tenement houses/apartment blocks were a thing back in the medieval ages (heck, the Romans loved to use those too) simply because they allowed loads of ppl in little space, thus at low construction costs. beyond that, every settlement ever has a graveyard nearby. sometimes within the walls of the city grew around it, sometimes outside the walls, and almost always with at least a shrine or other place of worship attached to it. These can, over time, become nice park areas... and if you ever want to build a city "for real", e.g. in survival or on an MP server, you'd probably want to look up the (modern) concepts of "zoning" and "road hierarchy" as they relate to "city planning" to get a better understanding of how to structure a city so it's not just looking nice, but also functioning well. loved the vid, particularly loved the cinematic bits at the end there gonna re-watch those now since I was distracted writing this "small" comment the first two times :-P keep up the great work!

    @Raszul@Raszul2 жыл бұрын
    • btw, i hope you dont mind me critizising your work like this ... when watching this vid it became rather clear to me that you approach these builds from an artist's perspective - aka you're trying for a certain visual and for beauty, not function. I on the other hand am a PnP RPG player and am actually building fortresses and cities with my cahracter/s. and they get attacked. and they get set on fire. and I get riots. and ... so I need them to function well first and foremost with historical accuracy helping achieve that and being used to make it more believable. only after those have been achieved to I bother to take a parting shot at making it look nice. so... neither approach is wrong, but they lead to very different perspectives. I hope these posts can give you some inspirations for how to make your builds even better and wont offend or annoy you ... :-P

    • While this is very much a valid criticism, I would like to point out that there are no half walls that can be built upon in vanilla Conan Exiles or its DLC. I believe the crenelations in the game are designed the way they are to allow thrall archers with their questionable AI to shoot down from behind them, so I think it's more a fundamental issue with the game than artistic choice. Unless you turn to mods or make convoluted design concessions, this is the best result you're likely to get.

      @geebee6583@geebee65832 жыл бұрын
    • @@geebee6583 agreed. at the time of writing that message I hadn't played the game. thus I was unaware of the AI issue or the exact blocks available to build with. Now I know that there is at least one mod that adds "propper" crenelations ... which are basically cheaty-glitchy and just look right but don't have collision for most of their model (their collision is identical to the default crenelations) ... so... yeah unfortunately there is no way to do that "right" with the options of the game and the ... somewhat silly AI.

      @Raszul@Raszul2 жыл бұрын
    • @@Raszul Pretty much. Your point does have merit like I said, and it's something I always struggle with when I build, especially when conforming to one style of architecture.
