I usually plot things out as I go, only starting with a general idea which often leads to a waste of both time and resources. The building design is impressive, both reasonably compact and detailed. I always end up with much larger structures to accomodate for details on the exteriors and interiors not interfering with one another, but clearly I have a bit to learn there. I did find it a bit amusing that we had almost exactly the same idea for city walls, though I guess options are a bit limited in that regard if you're going for the medieval look. mh... once again, a visually rather impressive vid. but ... crenelations ... please build a chest-high wall first, then place these on top. the idea behind them was that you could stand upright and be fully covered, step to the side, lose an arrow or crossbow bolt, then step back and be safe while you reload or just to evade return fire. also, walls never had inward-facing defenses or cover. the idea was that, should the wall be taken by an enemy, they don't gain any cover from attacks by defenders further inside the fortifications, e.g. on roofs of houses or a second wall. gatehouses would have two gates. one exterior (with a portcullis to trap enemies if one can afford that), and one interior. between those two gates & portcullis would be enough space for a full wagon (incl draft animal), so about 2-3 blocks in the game. on the roof of that enclosed space would be "murder holes" aka slits to fire through or through which hot/burning stuff (e.g. heated sand or boiling oil set on fire) can then be poured. regarding city layout usually, cities are arranged around 3 locations - the residence of the local lord (e.g. a manor or castle, usually with its own en-walled area either completely inside the city walls, or touching/overlapping the walls in which case its likely to be "behind" the city aka in a more defensible location where the city shields the residence), the religious center (e.g. a church, chapel or shrine), and the market place - an open area (usually incl. a well or fountain as a water source) another major consideration for towns and cities (but not villages or hamlets) is grain and wood storage locations. a city eats a LOT of grain. let's say each person eats 1-2 lb of grain per day and you got even just 500 ppl in your town. that's half a ton to a ton of grain per day. given that it takes half a year to three-quarters of a year between harvests, that's 200-300 days of food one needs to store. that's 250-ish tons of just grain. for a fairly tiny town. then factor in that as much as 30-50% of any stored grain spoiled due to rot or vermin and ... yeah, 400-500 tons of grain storage for a small town of 500 souls wouldn't be excessive ... (though a good portion of this would probably be stored by each family In their basement ... say half of it). and if its a farming community that sells grain? several times as much would be likely. similarly, ppl drink half a gallon (2-3 liters) per day. that is a lot of water that needs to be available. wells can handle some of that, but there is a reason many cities tried to be next to even just a tiny stream or better a full river or lake. in addition, ppl need wood to cook and to heat their rooms. medieval houses were notoriously drafty and cold, thus a lot of wood was needed to make it through the winter. multiply by the size of the town and you'll need several reasonably large roofed areas purely used for storing firewood... on top of that, most towns had 3-4 separate areas. one for the well-off citizens, usually in the safer areas and closer to the local lord's residence, often within their own walled section of the city. one for the craftsmen, usually near a river if there was one. smiths are loud, breweries and tanners stink to hell and back. you'd want that downstream and downwind of the city and separate from the living spaces one for the ppl to live in, sometimes separated into an area that turned into slums and one that is just low-to-mid-level regular folks aka commoners. these would, in cities and larger, be dominated by multi-family houses. yes, tenement houses/apartment blocks were a thing back in the medieval ages (heck, the Romans loved to use those too) simply because they allowed loads of ppl in little space, thus at low construction costs. beyond that, every settlement ever has a graveyard nearby. sometimes within the walls of the city grew around it, sometimes outside the walls, and almost always with at least a shrine or other place of worship attached to it. These can, over time, become nice park areas... and if you ever want to build a city "for real", e.g. in survival or on an MP server, you'd probably want to look up the (modern) concepts of "zoning" and "road hierarchy" as they relate to "city planning" to get a better understanding of how to structure a city so it's not just looking nice, but also functioning well. loved the vid, particularly loved the cinematic bits at the end there gonna re-watch those now since I was distracted writing this "small" comment the first two times :-P keep up the great work!
@Raszul2 жыл бұрын
btw, i hope you dont mind me critizising your work like this ... when watching this vid it became rather clear to me that you approach these builds from an artist's perspective - aka you're trying for a certain visual and for beauty, not function. I on the other hand am a PnP RPG player and am actually building fortresses and cities with my cahracter/s. and they get attacked. and they get set on fire. and I get riots. and ... so I need them to function well first and foremost with historical accuracy helping achieve that and being used to make it more believable. only after those have been achieved to I bother to take a parting shot at making it look nice. so... neither approach is wrong, but they lead to very different perspectives. I hope these posts can give you some inspirations for how to make your builds even better and wont offend or annoy you ... :-P
@Raszul2 жыл бұрын
I don't mind at all, and actually enjoy reading your comments. You definitely put the most effort into these comments than anyone else that I've seen.
@DrB0482 жыл бұрын
While this is very much a valid criticism, I would like to point out that there are no half walls that can be built upon in vanilla Conan Exiles or its DLC. I believe the crenelations in the game are designed the way they are to allow thrall archers with their questionable AI to shoot down from behind them, so I think it's more a fundamental issue with the game than artistic choice. Unless you turn to mods or make convoluted design concessions, this is the best result you're likely to get.
@geebee65832 жыл бұрын
@@geebee6583 agreed. at the time of writing that message I hadn't played the game. thus I was unaware of the AI issue or the exact blocks available to build with. Now I know that there is at least one mod that adds "propper" crenelations ... which are basically cheaty-glitchy and just look right but don't have collision for most of their model (their collision is identical to the default crenelations) ... so... yeah unfortunately there is no way to do that "right" with the options of the game and the ... somewhat silly AI.
@Raszul2 жыл бұрын
@@Raszul Pretty much. Your point does have merit like I said, and it's something I always struggle with when I build, especially when conforming to one style of architecture. Once I tried fashioning some makeshift machicolations out of hatchframes and... let's just say it led to a lot of headaches.

These can, over time, become nice park areas... and if you ever want to build a city "for real", e.g. in survival or on an MP server, you'd probably want to look up the (modern) concepts of "zoning" and "road hierarchy" as they relate to "city planning" to get a better understanding of how to structure a city so it's not just looking nice, but also functioning well. loved the vid, particularly loved the cinematic bits at the end there gonna re-watch those now since I was distracted writing this "small" comment the first two times :-P keep up the great work!
btw, i hope you dont mind me critizising your work like this ... when watching this vid it became rather clear to me that you approach these builds from an artist's perspective - aka you're trying for a certain visual and for beauty, not function. :-P
I don't mind at all, and actually enjoy reading your comments. You definitely put the most effort into these comments than anyone else that I've seen.
@@Raszul Pretty much. Your point does have merit like I said, and it's something I always struggle with when I build, especially when conforming to one style of architecture. Once I tried fashioning some makeshift machicolations out of hatchframes and... let's just say it led to a lot of headaches.
May I know the coordinates where this was made? Want to make sure I build where there is enough space xD
Love your buildings Barden, can you make a video without using Fly mode? I'd love to see how an Official Server Player will manage to do such creations.
I will mess around with some cinematic shots from a player perspective.
Man I wish more people put some effort into making their base look half this decent. Even on a chill server with hardly any raids I still only see sandstone boxes.
Agreed!
What area of the map are you on? I am having issues with finding a location that is big enough and not already built on
I think it was in K11. It's a somewhat flat area.
what location did you use for this build, looks like somewhere in the highlands, but ive never found an area there this big that i can remember
Isle of Siptah K11
@@DrB048 ty hon
epic. if i saw someone trying to build a city like this in a pvp or pve-c server then i would have aided the player.... same for pve
What map and location is this? Great builds, you've earned a sub 20 times over.
Isle of Siptah K11. It has a nice open field and somewhat flat.
These Yamatai walls do really resembles some medieval stylish walls, thet didn't connected to me.
Yup, if you use the slated and inverted slanted Yamatai walls, they look even more medieval. That was something that I didn't discover until after making this video.
Do you have a layout for the walls? I have watched this video for over an hour trying to piece it together and am struggling
Nope, but I am putting one together on my Discors. Should have it up within the next day or two.
It's posted on my Discord now.
Isen't the road part of a mod? And were on the map was this city built?
The city was built in J10. The roadways are not part of a mod, I believe they are from the Riders of Hyboria DLC and can be built in the artisans workbench.
Have to ask where abouts on the map did you build your city ?
Pretty much the center of J 10
Man this is awesome ik it's a long shot but do you have a diagram of how you done your walls?
The foundation layout is on my discord channel.
@@DrB048 any way I might be able to get that channel?
@@chriscanoy8035 Channel link is on my KZhead page.
Pretty epic
If it wasn't so damn expensive to build, on a official server this would take ages
Rome wasn't built in a day!
@@DrB048 i said this before your comment loaded up lmao
Do you have a video showing this city build, from start to finish?
Nope
@@DrB048 I love the build, I wish I had a good creative mind to design stuff like this.
WOW!
Since all of the buildings are linked or mostly linked I wonder if this would be considered a ban proof build :) But each building would have to have some sort of station
Ohhh you're def going to get banned if you make this on official 🤣
I see, I am planning on building maybe 1/3 of that for a base. But I still am a little frustrated that admins basically say. Play the game and build by “our” rules. For the good of the server lol. If you are going to give me freedom don’t limit me, right?
So i built the walls around my settlement but my wall wont connect with the final part where i started the wall, its all off. No matter what i do i cant connect them properly or line them up. How did you get your walls with your towers to connect all the way around the town?
Building asymmetrical walls will cause issues like these. What system are you playing on?
@@DrB048 im not sure what you mean by system, im using no mads, im on single player, and im on PC.
@@chasesnyder2793 Okay so your playing on pc. Hop into my discord server, link is in my channel description. I can try to help you with getting your problem resolved.
@@DrB048 ok sweet, also im not seeing your link in the description.
oh wait no i see it nvm sorry
Whats the name of music? 27:00 I dont remember... but i know this music!
It's the main theme for the isle of siptah.
U got a sub from me!
using foundations as walls instead of actual walls triggers me for some reason
What part of the map did you build this?
NW corner of K10 on isle of siptah
what did you use for the paths? can't find em
Paved Stone Walkways from the Riders of Hyboria DLC
@@DrB048 legend :)
Which dlc do you need to make your midevil style
You can get away with using the seekers of the dawn and people of the Dragon dlcs.
Now, show the people how to build the server friendly version of this, with out all the foundation pieces for the exterior walls, not to many servers will allow that many foundations being used in a build.
Simply substitute out the arena foundations with arena walls. Problem solved!
@@DrB048 I know how easy it is, but a lot of players go crazy with foundations, or they just do what they see in a video, great builds bud, keep it up!
Usually in my builds I don't go more than 2 foundations tall at my highest point. Adding Stonebrick fence foundations and fences on the bottom 2 add a nice texture and defense.
Where in the world did you manage to fit all this
J10 on the Isle of Siptah
@@DrB048 Thank you!!!!
When will the interior tutorial drop?
Idk, at some point 🤣
What if I don’t have the struts?? Can I use something else?
An insulated wooden doorframe might work.
I love to build until I’m sick. Then I go fight.
Omg. How long did that take?!
If I remember correctly, about a week to build for the video.
I don’t think my PS4 can take it 😅 so I’ll stick to small village builds
Small village, you just gave me an idea :)
@@DrB048 I look forward to seeing it, other builders always lend great inspirations
how you are destroying building parts so fast?
If you have the admin console activated on the PC version of the game, pressing "shift" plus "delete" will destroy the object or creature you are looking at.
@@DrB048 thanks very much
explain how this is not mod... has all the supplies and flaoting around...
As the name suggests no mods were used. A console player is able to build everything in the video because the pieces used and building mechanics are from the vanilla version of the game. Being able to access admin mode is not a mod and is included as well in the vanilla version of the game.
Ever try to build that in real survival game?
Nope, between real life work and working on KZhead videos, I don't have any time to actually play these games.
@@DrB048 You should hire out your services to a clan. Have them collect all the resources, jump in and put er up. Wonder if there's a market for that
@@Bubbles99718 Their is a very small market for it. The only issue doing something like that is not going to be cheap for whoever wants a build.
Wheres this location?
J10 I believe.
i wish building was this easy in the current update. why fix something that isnt broken! f*** the construction hammer
The construction hammer is significantly better than the old build system.
Location?
