If they actually played by the rules, there wouldn't be as much scoring and/or dunking, so the NBA slowly changed the game to put more butts in the seats. I quit watching American basketball in the mid 90's. It is nowhere near the game that it was years ago, even before the 1990's.

    • IMHO, if you watch this video and what little ball movement there is, compared to today's game, I don't see the physicality of the 80's being that much of a deterrent! Kinda' hard to foul someone when they don't have the ball that long and if you do, and that player is say beyond the 3-point line, that's 3 free throw attempts!

  • Bill Lambeer was a dirty player. Those who played against him like Bird can attest. He would intentionally put his foot underneath players rebounding to try and sprain their ankle when they landed. As Bird stated, if you weren't ready to go, meaning fight for what was right, you had no place on the court. Also, how sweet was Bird's fall away jumper. Not many could stop that.

    • Well I didn’t love the bad boy Image that Laimbeer and Mahorn cultivated though I’m a Piston fan. That being said they were SO much more than this video. Tremendous defense and tremendous perimeter shooting. Yes people hated them. Look at some other NBA highlights from this era. There are PLENTY of nasty, dirty takedowns of players from many teams. Even the “saintly” Lakers, Bulls and Celtics. There are PLENTY of Piston games where there was very little “dirty” play and just lights out defense, teamwork and shooting. If you must reply keep it civil. Just an opinion. The Pistons NEVER get the respect the other championship teams from that era get and they were one horrible call in the 6th or 7th game of the 1988 finals from a three peat. Also look at the last seconds of the 7th game. Cameramen, reporters and fans stormed the court and there was still time left on the clock. It’s all there. Btw those 80’s Celtic teams never won two in a row. I loved the lakers and Celtics from those days. As a Piston fan it was sweet to see them finally win just like when the Bulls finally won. Be well.

When reporters asked about it, Bird said something like "I *had* to shoot it lefty!" As Joe Dumars once said, Bird was a savant.

  • What a great Hockey Game that seventh game was! Everything but High Sticking in that Series. Rest assured that if they'd had sticks they would have used them. The Pistons were "The Bad Boys" for a reason. The only problem.being Larry Bird channeled that anger into greater deeds. I loved the Pistons, even though they crossed the line on numerous occasions. A remarkable stat is that whoever beat the Pistons in that era won the Title. Only Bird and Jordan could "Outbad" them.
