EXTREME TEST - How bad is the Fx30 in low light?

There have been complaints about the low light performance with the Sony FX30, so I decided to do a little testing in an environment with poor lighting to see how much noise would be produced shooting in S-Log.

  • I’m shocked at how well 6400 holds up

  • Good showcase. I tried a similar thing and found similar results. Don't have a clue on how SLOG 3 works but cranking the ISO and bringing down in post was cleaner every time.

  • interesting that even after passing the native iso's theres a clear benefit to boosting in camera vs later in post. important info for those who were taught to always keep iso at the native which maxes dynamic range but sacrifices on the increase in noise.

  • Interesting experiment - I have had excellent results with the Sony FX30, Slog3 Cine EI (800 & 2500). I think I'll look at trying it at 6400 ISO as you did.

  • I use the FX30 for shooting weddings without any issues. I use a Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 lens and typically shoot at 1/100 shutter speed. As a result, my ISO settings are usually between 2000 and 8000 after lunch and in the evening. This is fine for me because I like the grainy look in films, and these ISO settings give the footage a more natural film grain. It's perfect for my needs, and when I get an f1.4 lens, it will be a great combination for shooting in SLOG and dual ISO

  • I shot at 6400, the noise is much worse. Maybe youtube made it so mushy you can't see much. And, also, I have much more complex and colorful background. The noise is much more visible and it's basically unusable. Other youtubers confirmed that such as Nicolas Wang.

  • Can you make a video beteween this camera and a camcoder in the same condition?

    @procamara359@procamara359 Жыл бұрын
    • That sounds interesting. So you mean the same really low lighting situation with a consumer camcorder like the panasonic wxf991? It's the only current one that I own.

    • @Michael W. Turner Yes that sounds interesting and can you record 10 bit 4:2:2 video in HD on a normal SD card? I mean the cheap ones that everyone use

    • True because you have to use a way faster shutter speed. It's a good point, I haven't played around with it in S&Q.

  • there are many videos showing the fx30 killing it in low light, you just have to know how to use it.

  • nice, but please let's stop demanding the camera to give a bright footage when there's is no light in the scene....i don't get why people want to always want bright images at night. If it's too dark, lit the scene with external lights or get on with the moody dark environment.

    • Sometimes some of us don't have time to add lights to every scene. I shoot weddings and things don't always go according to plan. I do tests like these for those reasons. It will rarely ever be this extreme, but it is still nice to know my limits.

    • @@MichaelWTurner Sure, as long as it doesn't become a standard. I feel like videomakers lost their way of filming relying on the specs of the camera, like shooting in complete dark and expecting the subject to be exposed like if it was daylight. It was just a generic digression.
