My follow-up to the Pajero Mitsubishi Mayhem video.
The story began in 2009 when my relationship with a group of viewers went south, and it was one of the most pivotal moments in my story as a 4WD journalist. It concerns a critical review I shot in Namibia (Southern Africa) and published in a magazine called Leisure Wheels the same year, and the subsequent uproar from South African Mitsubishi 4x4 Pajero owners. Never before or since has the magazine received so many letters regarding one article, and it changed the way I looked at producing my work. They wanted to silence my pen, but instead the opposite happened. Mitsubishi Mayhem is that story. AND THIS IS THE FOLLOW-UP.

  • Hi Andrew, I am on my third Pajero, a 2016 mod. and I absolutly love it. I agree with everything you have said, You are spot on in every respect. More power to you.

  • Absolutely love the content you produce Andrew. Please keep at it and I do agree. It's important to recognise when we are fan boys of something and open our eyes up to the fact that other better things might be out there and that the things we love aren't flawless.

  • Hello Andrew, I get your point and understand everything you said. And that's one of the reasons why I am a suscriber, beacuse your opinion is not biased. After several years watching your content I know for sure that if you say that something is good, is good... or if you say is bad, is bad... period. You earned my trust that way. I am a 3rd gen Pajero owner (Montero here in Bolivia), and I agree with your perceptions. Also, as you pointed too, once you get to know his limitations, and after doing some little mods, still can be a good vehicle. But the thing is, if you become a fanboy, you get blinded, as many people out there. Thumbs up, and keep on doing your good work!!!

  • Really great review Andrew, this and the related vidio's - keep up the fantastic work; motor journalism that is honest! If only there were more like you. This vehicle is fit for a purpose/market, and so unfit for others. You have hit the nail on the head once again with your review and that is good advise for free (from someone with a great deal of experience), for potential buys. Well done.

  • Andrew I had a Shogun 2800TD and it was a great all rounder - apart from the terrible 3 speed auto we got in the UK and the thirst that went with it. I thought the two wheel drive option was really useful on our tight muddy trails as it allowed you to make a slippery turn by using a squirt of power with out the front pushing straight on. I agree with all your comments on the third gen, I test drove and it just didn't feel rugged enough for our tight scratchy lanes - I prefer my cars standard due to punitive uk insurance premiums so it was out for me. I would note that a bog standard one went through Siberia and Mongolia without issue with Ewan McGregor in Long Way Round so they are feasible.

  • The Pajero you drove in Nam was the Gen 4 if Im not mistaken. My dad has one and I have a Gen 3. It would be nice to get a review of the gen 3.. also a SWB and how one could make it a Overland vehicle for two people.

  • G'day Andrew. Thank you for your unbiased reviews and opinions and sharing your wonderful articles. I have a 1996 Pajero that was performing as you said. I took on the challenge and spent a fortune heavily modifying the vehicle. I can unequivocally state that this is girl can go to the extremes of the earth and one can live out of the vehicle for months on end. It was featured in a popular Australian glossy 4x4 magazine. I won that challenge to prove it can be done but at a cost of time, money and (re)design. One again many thanks for your time. God bless

  • @4xoverland Hi Andrew, thanks for the content. If I'm seeing this right, the vehicle you reviewed in your video was the 4th gen Pajero and not the 3rd, but you called it the third. Just wondering if I'm correct in this. Mainly I'm asking because I've been researching the 3rd gen to see if it's what I want. Here in the USA that is the last generation Mitsubishi sold, and I want to know if you have experience specifically with the 3rd gen. I've heard they are pretty similar though. Did yours have a button to disable traction control? I'm also wondering if the 3rd gens have that or not. I've seen some impressive videos about it's traction control, but it doesn't seem the best on sand as you've found. Thanks

  • G'day Andrew, It's the same old adage, You cant please all of the people all of the time, Only some of the people some of the time. What some people seem to overlook is that reports like you have done on the Pajero & others are based on your own personal experiences, which are honest, frank & to the point. But they are still your own personal opinion, You are a dying breed were you give people fair, honest & unbiased reports based on your own hands on experience. Not some sugar coated BS derived from a sales brochure, free lunch & a spin around the block. Keep it up Mate, I like your work & adventures especially the CSR & that is my personal opinion.

  • Hi Andrew, Recently discovered your channel and subscribed. Loving the content. I own and love my 2010 NT 3.2L DID gen 4-2 pajero. I totally agree with your comments about the Paj. There is very little difference between the later gen 3's and gen 4's. Every vehicle has it's strengths and weaknesses. Fanboys have to remove their heads from a dark body oriface, and see both sides of the discussion. Thank you for your open and honest opinions and fearlessness. Just gotta convince the misses for the 2" lift and remove some "tupperware". Keep up thr great work.

  • I was watching a Pajero crash test video on youtube and then watched your original Pajero review as youtube recommended it to me. I'm from the snowy north of Finland, only a 6 hour drive from the northern most point in mainland Europe. So watching dune videos is just fun and interesting to me, as it will never happen, so I do apologise for not knowing who you are. But I must say, soon as I started watching your video, I thought what an eloquent well spoken reviewer. I agreed with most of your points in your original review. Indeed, I thought you were quite gentle in your protestations. To me the review came across with some positives about the Paj, as well as the negatives. It was well balanced. As a Pajero owner, I thought you were mad for taking it in deep sand, as I know how poor mine does in deep snow. From what I gather, this Pajero episode has been a big deal, but I simply cannot fathom why. It was a well balanced review, and one this Pajero owner largely agrees with. So I just thought I would say (as I NEVER comment on anything), that I like your integrity and the fact you have stuck by your guns all this time. I bet 90% of the original pajero fan boys who whinged at your article/review are no longer pajero owners anyway, so they were really just fickle moaners who needed something to moan about. I'm subscribing to your channel. Keep up the good work.

  • Could not agree more. I own a 2019 3.5L V6 petrol (has GLS written on the back). Living in the UAE it handles most big sand dunes with ease with no modifications, but the plastic is a worry. A few mods down the line, but for now I am super comfortable keeping it as a weekend warrior car. In 4lc and second/third gear, it chows the sand dunes with ease. Its no Jeep Rubricon, but considering the price for vehicle and parts, its definitely worth the expense.

  • Hey Andrew, it might please you to know that for once, I agree with everything you just said! - well, apart from one tiny bit of detail where I disagree just ever so slightly. I like options, and similar to the Super Select t-case in the Gen 2 Pajero, my Jeep Cherokee XJ 4.0 (the best vehicle I ever owned!) came with a Select-Trac (New Venture 242) transfer case which also offered 2WD, 4WD High Full Time, 4WD High (Locked) and 4WD Low (Locked). Running in 2WD (which accounted for 99% of the time,) DID make for a noticeable improvement in fuel consumption over Full Time 4WD, bearing in mind the thirst of that beautiful inline 4 litre six. I recall what was said on forums at the time, and for that particular model the consensus was a penalty of around 0.8 l/100km or 1.5 mpg (US) which was similar to my experience. So happy was I with my XJ, that when replacement time came, I opted for a 4.0 litre Grand Cherokee WJ which used the Full Time Quadradrive (NV247) system. Big mistake because the fuel consumption was horrendous. Although I never had the unhappy experience of front differential or propshaft damage on my XJ, I do foresee that having the option of 2WD and the ability to disengage the front driveline, to be an advantage over Full Time 4WD.

    @jimbobjones3391@jimbobjones33916 жыл бұрын
    • the pajero in 2wd just disconnects the drive to the front wheels, you are still driving all the mechansm for the front wheel drive, hence the very small difference. You might save some tyre wear.I cannot measure any difference in fuel economy.Unlike your jeep the 3.2 diesel pajero is vey very good on fuel for a barn door 4wd.

  • Good series of videos. As an owner of one of these Gen 3 Montero/Pajero vehicles, I must say you hit the nail on the head with a number of their shortcomings. Ground clearance and the plastic trim are a little lackluster for an off road vehicle. I've had to remove the rear bumper plastic bit and trimmed the front fender trim shortly after buying out of necessity. Easy fixes all round, and upgrades such as tires, skid plates and a lift are needed if going over very rough terrain. At least in the US market, these vehicles are so undervalued compared to the Toyota/Lexus SUV's that its an easy decision to make if you are on a budget as they are nearly half the price for a comparable vehicle. I figure this is one of the better entry level vehicles for the $0 - $6,000 price ranges and can easily be tweaked to overcome the shortcomings to a fair degree.

    • Yup. I got a 2005 for 4000. That was less than I paid for my Range Rover Classic and it was way more capable off-road and on. Comparable 100 series go for twice as much. Hell, most 80 series with 300k+ miles go for more. It's a no-brainer.

  • Past experience with Pajeros is a transfer case that offers 2WD is in case something happens to the front axle or if the gearbox develops trouble once high mileage is achieved, engaging 2WD allowed us to crawl out of the forest. The same applies to the Hilux and Nissan Hardbody. It's a nice option to have.

  • I don't know why your Pajero videos come on the notices here with me. Perhaps because I did a few searches on upgrades I want to do on my Pajero. I was honoured to meet you in Somerset West when you were still here. I have a Gen 3 Pajero and I am convinced that you have tested the Gen 4. The Gen3 production was discontinued in 2006 and that was when I bought my Pajero, I still have it. We just came back from a holiday trip, my daughter and two grandchildren were on the back seat and never complained. I agree with the Tupperware back bumper but that doesn't make the vehicle bad. I also agree on the suspension, therefore I upgraded with Oldman EMU and got a nice 50 mm lift. I have the GLX, so-called Africa spec, it has rear difflock. In 17 years, I only got good things to say about my vehicle, it took me on many good enjoyable holidays, especially the Kgalagadi, never got stuck. I can recall that your original video you complained about the alarm, at the end you displayed a correction that it was the safety belt warning and that you found a way to disable the alarm, I have never experienced any alarm. I just thought I mentioned the Gen 4, I'll enjoy my Gen 3 as long as I can still drive, hopefully many years as I am only 69 years old now! All the best to your future reviews.

  • Andrew I completely agree with you, for reasons unknown to humanity, people have never been able to handle negative (opposite) opinions about something they like. I never knew the Pajero had such a loyal following. I just wanted to leave a comment, I think people who really do love their vehicles and are well trained in taking negative comments on their choice of vehicles are Land Rover oweners. If you joke to a owner about how bad a Defender for example is/was the owners often times laugh with you. Thank you for sharing.

  • Poor old Pajero, agree it fully lost the plot with plastic bumpers after the NM circa 2001 (which I love and own). As a vehicle my old NM needs a lifted suspension to make it practical on rough roads and sand dunes for sure. Driving stock vehicles in tough conditions is kind of asking for trouble...I work for ARB here in Australia so I am selling 4WD modifications day in day out, so I think it’s best to defocus on using showroom vehicles to take on harsh tracks unmodified - it’s typically a hiding to nothing and asking for trouble. I think it would make more sense for you to encourage safe and enjoyable modification of Pajero to enhance its core strengths in a range of 4WD’ing scenarios. My personal viewpoint is that it’s your bias to Toyota for/ from your own enjoyment that gets other brand owners most ruffled. I love Toyotas for their many strengths. I drive them every day and I worked as a motor mechanic in a Toyota dealership 30-years ago, but Toyota can really make some soulless cars that have a lack of mechanical-emotional-performance synergy with the best (worst) of all car manufacturers...I could say that the 70 Series is an outdated iron sled, uncomfortable on and off road, with a peach of a V8 paired with a diabolically average gearbox and drivetrain, cruddy driveability, fully - so many highly unenjoyable traits (including being highly over-priced), but that would be just me being honest and spicing up the forum 😂

    @amdaniels11@amdaniels116 жыл бұрын
    • As a proud Land Cruiser owner, I would have to agree with you on all points concerning Toyota - and the 70 series. Nobody ever boasted on FaceBook that they were excited collecting their new Camry. People keep that kind of thing to themselves. And a RAV4, which was once a ball-buster is now a cure for insomnia.

I owned a shark nose Celica with the Camry (Cumry) donk and it was a prawn, ‘you can eat the body all day and night, but throw the head (engine) in the the bin where it belonged’, I paid AU$46,000 for that car but still mates with the Salesman at Bill Buckle Toyota Sydney, now at Ryde Toyota Sydney (name withheld for friendship reasons hi hi). • Just watched this again, i watched it years ago before buying a used low km NW pajero and this video helped seal the deal because it was honest, combined with its heavy duty driveline it ticked all my boxes. After owning it all these years id actually buy another. Where i think these shine, much like tupperware ( you dont see tupperware in a commercial kitchen 😉) is as a family daily wagon with weekend day trips to beach, school holiday trips to your favourite town and capability of doing a little exploring. My glxr model with rear diff lock has surprised me on a few occasions. Does it hold a candle to the patrol it replaced?... not really. But its biggest tick is its a proper 4x4, as capable as most heavy duty 4x4's for far less money than the market leaders. For occasion offroad use its perfect. Much like tupperware, i wouldnt dare rely on it for commercial every day heavy use but for occasional use its perfect if a regular station would do, but falls short of what you need for the weekend. 🍻

  • I think you are very right in what you say. I am a bit of a Land Rover "Fanboy" on occasion. I think you can be as big a fan of something as you jolly well like, but, you have to understand what it CAN'T do. Just as much as what it CAN do. Far as the fuel saving goes, I have hired the latest Mitsu L200 or, Triton depending on where you live. And, while I never used it off road, I did see if there was a marked difference between 2H and 4H with center diff unlocked... And I think in 2H I personally managed about.... maybe 1 and a bit extra miles per gallon at best. So it really made no sense to disengage the front wheels... A friend of mine is a plumber and owns the previous generation L200/Triton... and he never uses it in 2H. i think some 4x4's are very good at doing lots of things, and doing them well. Other just need to pick one strength and stick to it. much like the Defender never tried to be a good school run mobile, it was a workhorse. End of. Just as a Nissan Qashqui isn't trying to be a competent off road beast, its a fake 4x4. The end. One final word on fanboys... I hate it when there is a video of a 4x4 then fanboys of a different make come in and say how rubbish that make is, compared to their make.... really guys? Is that necessary?

  • Andrew is right. I have had several pajero 2 and 3's amongst others. The gen 2's are proper off road cars. The gen 3's can manage a light bit of off road work but are much better on the road with a better engine. Neither bad cars, just pick the right one for the right application.

  • I'm really in doubt about which 4x4 diesel should I choose. I live in Brazil and the cars available here in the appropriate price range are: Mitsubishi Pajero 2011; Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 2007; Mitsubishi Pajero Sport (also called challenger or Dakar) 2010; Toyota Fortuner 2008. How good are these cars off-road? How stable are they on the road? How well built are they? How comfortable are they on difficult roads? I personally am inclined towards Pajero or Pajero Sport. Any answer is welcome.

  • The Super Select thing may be because the transfer case uses a chain that would not last the gearbox lifetime if used 100% of the time. Of course, the right thing (TM) would be to improve the transfer case and do away with 2H, I must agree.

  • In response to your statement about the 2wd/4wd unlocked/4wd locked transfer cases, I'd like to give you a few more small reasons why I'd use 2wd over 4wd unlocked on the road and why I like my NV242 transfer case so much: 1. Slightly less drivetrain wear, especially at higher driveshaft angles on lifted vehicles 2. Slightly less drivetrain noise, especially noticeable around 100 kph 3. A more enjoyable handling on dry pavement. (this is 100% personal preference) 4. Able to do sweet power slides in the snow (very important!) 5. Yet another thing to tinker with and tweak, which I find really enjoyable. They're all minor benefits, negligible for most people, but they mean a lot to some weird people like me!

People don't often realise that but then we all ought to drive different vehicles. I used to think Rangers were the boots until I tried Meindle. I used to think my old Landy Defender was the nuts until I tried a 95 Prado. Then I tried a Pajero and it fits my needs perfect. It amaising how little people think about needs and requirements instead of "wants" and image.

  • Wasn't the Pajero you took out the Gen4? I know there aren't many differences between 3 & 4, but according to much I've read on the net, the Gen3 has/had a better build quality (less rattles etc) I'm not a Mitsu "fan boy" as it were. Don't even own one, nor have I ever. My first 4x4 was an Isuzu Frontier. My current 4x4 is an Nissan Patrol 4.8 GRX, obviously the latter is not my daily drive, as I'm not the Sultan of Brunei. Personally I have no issues with the Pajero, I like them a lot! Really like the 3 door version (will get one for the wife when I can afford it) As you say, comfortable (and safe) in pretty much every situation, but not as hard core an off-roader as the Patrol in my example. But you can do pretty much anything with the vehicle. The fact that you can do the school run, day in and day out, and go to the Namib with some effort (admittedly) once every year, or every 5 years, and also climb the "curb" at the local mall, day in and day out, is great in my opinion. Don't know why this has spiraled out of control like this. PS I'm a South African. If you want a vehicle to tackle the Namib every weekend, well then this won't be the 4x4 for you. But for 99.9% of the people that buy one, won't ever see the Namib, it's a good safe choice, and much less likely to get stolen or Hi-jaked in South Africa than any Toyota currently being sold.

The Pajero version we have is vastly different, it has 3.8 V6 petrol engine, a rear Dif-Lock and it's a complete beast. Even when i got stock couple of times in soft sands, I managed to recover my self (No towing, No sand ladders). In fact I've recovered my brother's V8 Petrol 4.6 105 series land cruiser several times. So I think it's fair to say that you got a bad version of the on of Mitsubishi's best vehicles.

Stick to your guns mate, most on here, myself included, wouldn't even know as much as you've probably forgotten about Overlanding/4WD'ing. Re: the superselect 4WD. 2WD option makes the vehicle more agile which is usefull in town. In fact, every owner knows that out of the "real " 4x4's its the best for everyday driving, but its no truck like a 70 series for extreme overlanding. Saying that I had a friend who was an engineer in Australia and they drove in the bush all day everyday and Pajeros were their company vehicles. With the company trouble Mitsu had Toyota won most of corporate contracts.

  • I would have to agree with RedesCat.... well a cuddle with my FJ and see what develops. Andrew, I haven’t read all the comments, however, I Drive my FJ in 2wd on dry pavement (I think you call it tar seal?). Anyway it corners better on the dry and it saves the front 4wd drive components from the extra wear so it should last longer? I cannot recall whether the original FJ 40 was 2wd to 4wd, however I think it was. So my point is that it is not always about mpg going from 2wd to 4wd. When it rains or in the snow it goes in 4wd, That said, have been watching your channel for years (since South Africa) and it is top drawer. Keep up the excellent work. Oh also quit picking on the Mitsubishi guys - ha ha. Last thing - my wife enjoys your stories, however, she is worried about your health. She thinks that you must take better care of yourself. The Pajero2 is the best for off-roading. No doubt. I feel better in the driver seat. I owned 2 toyotas: One 80 series, and a short prado (120 serie). I owned a Nissan patrol 2.8D, a Pathfinder 2.5D and a Navara. In fact there is no bad brand, but only 4x4 models with there limits. Once you drive a car with its limits in mind, you cannot be disapointed. I prefer the Pajero2 off road, but I prefer the Pajero4 on the road. I didn't know the pajero4 when I bought it. I thought it had the same capacities as the version2. I was very disapointed as I had too hight expectations. I like Mitsubishi, but not the pajero4 for off-roading. that's all.

  • Not sure if it was my 'delica' comment in the last video you seemed to latch onto in this response. I was in agreement with what you had to say. I used 'delica' due to better understanding on my part (familiarity) and just clarified it's similarities with the Pajero to at least give some heft to what I was saying with some if any experience. It was not a product/brand endorsement or a statement to diminish personal credibility. delica is far from perfect but i get the 'warm fuzzies' to coin a phrase. I personally wanted a 4x4 van in Australia (limited options) and the knowledge base/information stated the diminishing off road capability with every new* generation. (it could have been any brand) My main point however was that All* brands seem to be designed by 'accountants' now and marketed toward the 'tupperware prince/s'. So it was more of a old vs new observation. I don't think any brand is not guilty of this fact. The history you have is unfortunate with (a fan base) defending their brand loyalty. It's a shame really that honesty needs to be defended. I also hope that likewise your view on all drivers/users of brand X do not fall under the 1 category because experiences of the past, But i can understand given the events transpired . I just hope you might reconsider working with a brand* and just not working with fanboys* well intentionally anyway.

I cannot discount your very valid experience but have two observations; one all cars with a centre handrest is never a 5th seat, second the bumpers of most cars in a that category are plastic and 'disposable' without modified bumpers, it boils down to which plastic is worse and there mitsubishi is worse. Pajero presents good value for money all round as it is a jack of all trades... judge it on how many things it does not on whether it does one or two things well

He continually shitcans my 4.8 patrol, but I only use it to tow a 3.5 tonne boat, which it does very well except fuel consumption. I just can’t justify the extra 20k plus price tag for a 4.5TD Toyota. Although I don’t consider myself a fanboy, I have owned 3 patrols, only because I like the tough feeling of it’s body/chassis. My first was a brand new 3.0 litre which was like driving a car with asthma but the petrol versions are better, particularly the 4.8. I’ve also owned a Jeep commander which I loved but it didn’t compare to the patrols ruggedness. Would I buy a land cruiser? Of coarse, but only the 4.2 or 4.5 TD. Would I buy a Mitsubishi? No, it’s not fit for my purpose, ie lack of tow capacity. Keep up the good work.

  • I am another Toyota owner, own several, but all vehicles have short areas. Sometimes due to cost and/or marketing to the general public. Several years ago at a Toyota meet, we asked the VP of toyota north america would we ever see a Diesel or a 70 series in the USA? His answer is no, the development cost for the North American market would not cover the limited number of vehicles they would sell. They had developed vehicles just for the US market, example was the FJ cruiser that 70% of what was sold was 2wd. (We were too small of a market segment) Alot of people want the image of a off road vehicle but will never use it as intended. Manufacturer's know this and market vehicles to that segment. Those of us that use our trucks here own rebuild fj40, fj60 and fzj80 series Land Cruisers, old jeeps, older suburbans and heavy duty trucks. Why because they are reliable and work off road. Are they perfect no but they work and the resale market shows that in the value these vehicles still hold. Mitsubishi has never had good resale here, you will not find any being rebuilt and the resale on any mitsubishi in the US other than the EVO rally cars is nothing no one wants them. There will always be a market for quality vehicles but many people get sucked into the marketing. All manufactures do it to some degree, some are great at the marketing side, here in the US Jeep is amazing, Not a quality product but the marketing sells them and the aftermarket loves them. The aftermarket makes lots of money fixing the issues with them. So the off road magazines love the advertising $$$ from the aftermarket so they love new jeeps. There will be one in every off road magazine. Amazing how perception is shifted by marketing and reality is hard for some people to except.
