Merely two of the greats of their generation in Roger Clemens and Pedro Martinez, who brought a combined nine Cy Young Awards into this epic showdown. The teams? Just the Red Sox and Yankees, epic rivals for decades. When they met for a decisive Game 7 at a juiced-up Yankee Stadium, it seemed impossible that the Red Sox and Yankees could live up to a game that was hyped like few others. True enough, it didn't live up to the hype. Instead, it was even better than advertised. And when Aaron Boone stepped to the plate in the 11th inning, the "Curse of the Bambino" swirled in the rafters.
The rivalry hit a climax from 2003-2005. It hasn't been the same since.

2003 and 2004 was the height of Red Sox Yankees rivalry, I miss the atmosphere in the stadium for those games.The last few years the teams have almost become friendly, its sad. Both teams are stacking young talent I hope in the next 2 or 3 years these teams are at each others throats again
I think the Munson years saw the height of the rivalry, he and Fisk, Mickey Rivers and Bill Lee. They were great games in 03 and 04, but the rivalry wasn't as hot.
I agree. I've lived through both times, and this rivalry was bigger back in the 70's. I'll never forget 1978 and the years before and after. Fisk and Munson, Rivers and Lee like you say. Eckersley and Guidry. We had Reggie and Pinella, while the Sox had Fred Lynn, Jim Rice and Carl Yasztremski. That was a hell of a rivalry. One game playoff needed to decide the division in 1978, and what a classic game that was. The tension was unreal for that game like no other I've ever experienced. I remember when the rivalry was so intense back then, that every single time those 2 teams got together, it was like a World Series atmosphere. Like every single game, you had to win to prove you are the better team. Now when they get together, it's like, oh the Sox are playing the Yankees today, like it's just a routine scheduled series. Don't get me wrong, the rivalry in 2003 was still intense, but not quite like it was in the late 70's and early 80's.
I tell people that the air was electric from the time you got to Kenmore Square, and Fenway was insane, particularly if school was in session and the NY fans from Bu were there. A couple of pops at the Rathskeller, maybe a joint on the walk over the turnpike, and let the game begin!
It began in 1999, remember the coke bottle incident, and escalated from there. Now it's almost friendly. Good times.
It started long before that. As a kid in the 50's we hated the Yankees. Then in the 70's it was Fisk and Munson, Mickey Rivers and Bill Lee.
It hurts watching this game as a Red Sox fan, but I'm sure it hurts just as equally for Yankee fans to watch most of the 2004 ALCS in return. 2003-2005 like most people have said was no doubt the height of this rivalry, and I REALLY miss watching the MLB from that time period. Every game during that time that involved the Red Sox and/or Yankees was intense, no matter who the opponent was.

Here's several reasons why: Former Yankee David Wells signs for the Red Sox, while Randy Johnson signs with the Yankees. You also had a few Red Sox and Yankee players pretty much swapping sides and playing for the other team compared to the year before, including Alan Embree, John Olerud, and Mark Bellhorn. Mariano Rivera still having lots of trouble closing games against the Sox, most notably during the beginning of the 2005 season. Gary Sheffield getting into a fight with a fan at Fenway during a game in April 2005 Red Sox coming off their best championship run ever from the previous year Both teams having an incredibly intense run for the playoffs in 2005 And the list goes on from there. I think 2006 was when the rivalry really cooled down compared to what it was before that, although the main highlight from the end of 2005 going into 2006 was Johnny Damon signing with the Yankees if you ask me.
I know this is an old thread but I think ever since the old Yankee Stadium got torn down the rivalry went to an all-time low. The current Yankee Stadium just doesn't have that same charm to it, it is more like overpriced fancy hotel with half the seats empty rather than a good ole' ballpark that everybody knows and loves. At least you guys still have Fenway.

I will never, ever forget going to this game. The most unbelievable atmosphere you could ever imagine when Boone hit that HR. Grown men who had never met before hugging each other in celebration. NOBODY left the stadium for 15 minutes after the game was over. God I miss those Yankees teams from the mid-90's-early 2000's.

I watched this game at home being from Connecticut. I was 11, I had to be in bed for school at maybe 10. I remember waking up due to the house phone going crazy after the home run.

Regardless of how many times I watch this game, my reaction is still the same. In my opinion, this game goes down as one of the most amazing games in the history of the NYY...with the exception of the 2001 WS. Ugh, how I miss these days.
It's ironic how they didn't win the WS in these incredible years. Where the most unbelievable happened.
As a Red Sox fan, this is really tough to watch. But I really gotta respect the Yankees for this one. They had a truly great team, and even if the eighth inning rally is painful, it still gets my adrenaline pumping to see Yankees fans go so nuts when Posada tied it. This is, without question, the greatest rivalry in all of sports.

I agree! It's sad. I can't talk about the rivalry the way I used to back at this time. It wasn't that long ago but the fact is America has abandoned their national pastime! Sad but it's reality. It's not fast or dumb minded enough for the majority of impatient Americans to care about anymore. Thanks technology! The Dominican Republic and other patient societies or areas where smart phones and constant entertainment is only a few thumb presses away isn't available, OUR not so called anymore national pastime thrives. As a former higher level ball player (college ball) it makes me very sad! In my area, there's no babe Ruth league, no American Legion league, I'm wondering if little league is in the verge of extinction! Here are the main events in the Red Sox yankees rivalry. In 1903 the first time they met, a fight took place. 1904 won of the best pennant races ever took place, with the Red Sox defeating the Yankees on the last day of the year, to win the Pennant. In 1912 the two teams played the first ever game at Fenway. The Red Sox won on a walk off by Tris Speaker. In 1919 Babe Ruth was sold to the Yankees, and so were many other Red Sox players in that era. 1938, a brawl tkaes place again between the club. In 1941 one of the greatest player vs player sports rivalries started (Joe Dimaggio vs Ted Williams). Its worth noting the two clubs finsihed 1 and 2 for the pennant 4x from 1938-1942. In 1948 Boston knocked NYC out of the pennant race in the final week, leaving them alone to battle with the Indians. In 1949 an amazing pennant race took place, won by New York. More fights took place in 1952, and 1967. Roger Maris broke the home run record against the Sox in 1961. Billy Rohr was denied a no hitter in '67, and Mike Mussina was denied when he was 1 strike away from a perfect game in 2000. In the 70's things really got hot, as the teams battled for the pennant from 1975-1978, and had fights in '73, and '76. Thurmun Munson and Carlton fisk also had a rivalrie going. The fans have gotten involved, from Gary Sheffield fighting a fan in 2005, and a fan jumping into the bullpean in 2003, too Yankee fans throwing beer bottles on to the field in the '04 ALCS and Chris Champliss getting a dart thrown at him in 1974. The Bucky Dent homer and the Boston Massacre in 1978 was brutal, so was Dent getting fired in Boston in the 90's. From 1999-2006 the rivalry hit it's peak. Brawls in '03 and '04, Curt Schling, Johnny Damon, Roger Clemens, and A-rod deals. And of course the 14 games played between the teams in the '03 and '04 ALCS', (THE odds are a walk off will take place 1 in 15 times, but in this case it happened 3x in 14 games. The hiring of Aaron Boone, the 2017 A.L east race, and both teams being good has kept things intersting in recent years, but when the bronx zoo died, so did a lot of the energy surrounding the rivalry. Fenway and the Old Yankee stadium were both extremely rowdy, so taking away the old Yankee stadium left us with only one eletric venue.
Man I miss the old Stadium. It was so loud and there was so much energy in the playoffs... Not the same anymore. Just listening to the fans brings back memories of that era.

I miss this rivalry even though of not a red Sox or yankees fan. Ever since the red Sox broke the curse and became a dynasty the rivalry has lost its meaning. On the MLB network 20 greatest games. They talked about how Rivera had to go back in the dugout when the Yankees rallied in the 8th as he was warming up because he started crying because the moment got too big for him. He said he never heard yankee stadium as loud as it was that night. I have to turn the volume down as i watch this on youtube sometimes that's how loud it was. I can only imagine what it was like for those fans that were at the game.

I remember this day perfectly. Grew up in southern Connecticut and the energy for the game was already palpable at my middle school soccer practice. Straight divide between yanks fans and Sox fans. There was an energy in the air that was indescribable. And the game didn’t disappoint. We will experience that again

It's like congrats you one 1 title, law of averages. Like I said, the yanks had just won 4 out of 5 world series and had little to prove. Oh yeah, and Ortiz and others roided the sox to win in 2004, everyone knows that and if they deny it they're just in a bubble. Thirdly, red sox fans are the biggest douches in baseball and everyone agrees on that. And most importantly, 2003 and 2004 were followed up with the Yankees christening the new cathedral by winning the World Series in 2009, it's first year, thereby stealing the team of the decade title from Boston, and the RED Sox went on to achieve the single biggest collapse in the history of sports in 2011. Lost a 9 game lead in September, and were ONE STRIKE AWAY in game 162 and blew it. Anybody can lose 4 games in a row (after winning 6 of the previous 8 pennants I'll repeat). To blow it with 5 outs to go and a 5-2 lead with no runners on in 2003 is bigger. To slowly collapse and set a record for losses in a single month (7-22) and blow it with one strike to go after everyone predicted they'd win the World Series is much much bigger. Mathematically, it's a much bigger choke than 2004 and totally made up for it in the eyes of many yankee fans. Sad that you're a yankee fan cuz you should be wearing these facts like a badge on your sleeve. 27>3 P.S. The Red Sox just spent 400 million dollars in one offseason/season and came in last place.

Everyone talks about Boone's HR, but Mo was the other hero, coming up big for three innings yet again. Seeing him huddled on the mounds in tears at the end shows how emotional that series was. They might not have won the World Series after that, but this ALCS was one of the all-time greats.
Roger Clemens pitched some of the most infamous games in Red Sox history, for both sides. 1986 World Series Game 6, 2003 ALCS game 7, etc.

Honestly this is one of my favorite Pedro Martinez games to watch. Really this shows how good he was when you think of the tense environment and the atmosphere of this game with it being Game 7. That includes the 8th Inning. It was so close and took all of that effort for the Yankees to finally rally and for Pedro to be done. He was tiring in the 8th but still looked better at 60 percent than most pitchers at 100 percent.
What killed me at the time was that (Giambi’s HRs notwithstanding) Pedro’s stuff and control was good enough to keep hitters from making good contact. They just left him in there long enough for the fastball to flatten out. In retrospect, I’m so glad Terry Francona didn’t pull a Grady Little and let Martinez get his clean 7 shutout innings to finish his Sox career in 2004 (when his pitch count was ALSO at 100) instead of spoiling that clutch strikeout of Soriano.

White Sox fan here. I remember watching this game with my dad back when I was a sophomore in high school. It was one of my fondest dad-son bonding moments when Boone hit that home run. Until the White Sox won it all in 2005, this was my favorite baseball moment.

It's sad the Yanks didn't win it all that year. But as far as moments go, the Aaron Boone home-run has got to be one of my favorites of all time. I love the 8th inning and Posada's double and his reaction, but the moment Boone made contact with that ball in the 11th everyone knew it was gone. It was sheer exhilaration.

I was in high school at this time, and this was baseball at its peak for me. It was so dramatic watching the Red Sox & Yankees slug it out in 2003 & 2004, it was probably the best rivalry in all of sports at that time. In the NLCS, you had the whole Chicago Cubs/Florida Marlins Bartman drama and that series was a crazy rollercoaster ride too. Crazy that of the final 4, the only team that wasn’t a historic decades old franchise, was the one who ended up winning it all, the Marlins!

I've seen a lot of baseball in my life, especially the Yankees and Sox rivalries 1975 Sox and Reds. 1977,78 Yankees and Bucky in that awesome one game playoff game in 78.1999 Yankees Sox 2003 and 2004. Nothing beats this rivalry. It will never be the same. I'm a big Yankees fan and I knew at the time of this game seven the RED SOX were ready for a championship. They were just as good as the YANKEES by 2003. In 1978 the RED SOX were great and if it wasn't for the YANKEES I believe they would have whipped the DODGERS and won it all. As a Yankees fan I salute the BOSTON RED SOX for winning it in 2004. Great memories., but the YANKEES WILL ALWAYS BE THE BETTER TEAM AND MUNSON/FISK were the two best AL catchers in baseball in the 70's . I'm a big MUNSON fan hated FISK at the time, but respected him. I was very young at the time. Now I love Fisk LOL.

Yankee fan here ... Oddly enough, in 2004 I accepted our fate with a sense of serenity. After this dramatic Game 7 win in the 2003 ALCS that was devastating for the Red Sox and their fans, I could only marvel at Boston's incredible comeback from a 3-0 deficit in 2004. These were two epic AL championships by two great, deserving teams.

I know he doesn’t want to take away from the game, but he does the opposite by sounding like a robot. He has gotten much better recently, but he used to be a rough listen.
To all you complaining about Joe Buck. I'm a Yankees fan & think he called this game just fine. He is a NEUTRAL announcer. He's not supposed to call it with the biased emotion that regional announcers do. Get over yourselves.

I was at this game, with my father and good friend I who i worked for who is a die hard Red Sox fan, I'll never forget the the look of all our faces, I'm a Tribe fan, but I'll say it was surreal, the old Yankee stadium use to shake, you just felt the vibe back then that these guys had something lookin over them, every time I felt it, yankees pulled off something memorable
Till this day as a Yankee fan, my favorite Yankee game of all time

I remember watching this live in my college dorm room and as soon as Wakefield let that ball go I knew it was gonna be a HR. One of the best sports moments I ever witnessed and 2 NY Giants Super Bowls vs. Tom Brady 😱

For every '04, there were the killa b's, divisions, pennants and world series wins, before n after. Yankees have lost more World Series than that team has won. Let that sink in. Losing game 7 in the WS against Arizona hurt a hell of a lot more than '04. Being in a position to 4peat holds more weight than a team getting lucky for once. Yanks4life!!

Okay, I wasn't going to make anymore comments tonight on this game but I had forgotten Bret Boone had only seconds earlier been brought up into the broadcast booth! What an amazing lifetime memory for both brothers to share! Amazing!
Still gives me chills to this day, i remember being up that night watching knowing i couldn't go to school that morning if the Yankees lost this game.
I miss the pre A-Rod Yankees. To this day, I still ask myself why Grady Little didn't take out Pedro when it was clear he was out of juice. 44:15 Kevin Millar home run off Clemens. Pretty soon, Moose comes in to replace him and pitches a gem 1:47:00 David Whoretiz homer off of David Wells which made it 5-2 Red Sox 1:53:00 Jeter double off of Pedro. That should've been the moment Grady Little took Pedro out. When I was watching this game, I thought our season was over when it was 5-2 Sox. 2:58:00 Aaron Boone home run. This, Tino's home run in game 4 of the 2001 World Series, Jeter's walk off in game 4 of the 2001 World Series, and the Jim Leyritz home run in the 1996 World Series were some of the best home runs in Yankees postseason history.
Grady was a hunch manager and would frequently disregard scouting reports. The Sox ownership planned to fire him after the season regardless after he almost blew the Oakland series the week before. Timlin, Embree and Williamson had given up 1 run in 20 innings combined to that point but Grady "had a hunch" Pedro could get it done. Obviously he was wrong and he was out of a job a week later.
I love how typing in just "2003" brings up this game, the greatest game I ever saw live. Didn't care the Yanks lost the WS; I was spent. If Aaron Boone ever wants to be done, I would totally do him.
It is a supreme honour that I attended this game. I sat in the Bleachers, Dead Centre. I knew that I would never see a bigger game. Almost 17 years ago now. I still remember yelling at the top of my lungs when Boone went yard and I could not even hear myself. I had never experienced that before. It biggest non-World Series knockout game in baseball history. I will still say that this loss was tougher for Red Sox fans then 2004 was for Yankees fans.

I was at a bar across the street from the stadium, and you could hear the stomping and the crowd as if they were 2 feet away. People were hugging in the streets. I even kissed a random hottie :0
