Ponting and Jadeja are believed by many, including myself, to be better all around fielders, That's just opinion as well, but the fact that those opinions are held by a lot of people means we really can't say Rhodes was "undoubtedly" the best.

And total catches is a stupid measure, being a product of games played and catches generated more than a player's catching skill. But even if we pretended it was what mattered, Ponting is 55 ahead of Rhodes.

Square of the wicket I still don't think there has been any better since when it comes to saving runs and catching. I think Ponting was better at direct hit run outs and as an all-round fielder. None was better at saving runs at cover than Ponting.

  • I think Jonty Rhodes brought respect and admiration to fielding, when the games was mostly about batting and bowling. The massive names in cricket with just batsmen and bowlers. But Jonty brought his own style and commitment to fielding that set the stage and benchmark for future generations. I grew up watching him in action, and he stole the show. Suddenly we were there not to see the batting prowess of bowling tactics, but to see Jonty demolish a team by stealing a small chance and devastating the batsmen. Its Jonty. The quintessential fielder.

  • I watched his first class debut season in 1988 when fellow university student club cricketers kept talking about his running between the wickets and freaky fielding. So we went to Kingsmead where Rhodes for Natal made a good score against Western Province ..later he fieldes and i was unlike anything I had ever seen.in terms of speed across the turf , anticipation and acrobatic catching. He built up a huge local following with fellow cricketer/rugby player Errol Stewart who was similarly athletic. Haven't see anyone since Jonty with the same explosiveness, agility, speed in that point /cover point area.

Loved it because you could watch the tactics develop, only great player survived 5 day. SA politics destroyed proteas cricket, really fantastic to see some glimpses of the return of SA to world class. Just as the Bok team has made South African great again, now that the teams can select from all its people, the culture of sport is coming back. Would love to see athletes get back in a strong presence. Jonty was respected around the world and made fielding an important skill for the teams.

Then there was Clive Lloyd of West Indies, both magnificent in the cover point and mid wicket regions hitting the stumps nearly every time. Then came this fella, Jonty Rhodes. He was like a fish out of water, taking catches horizontal from the ground and his hitting of the stumps running batsmen out was extraordinary. I do apologise I forgot to mention Derek Randall of England who was in the same mould as Lloyd & Rhodes, brilliant fielder.

  • For hitting the stumps.. Ponting was better. But for diving and catching balls, run outs as a whole.. Jonty was better.

  • Jonty might be the godfather of fielding; those pin point direct throws, phenomenal diving catches... But I believe Jadeja is a bit more versatile. Jonty is more of a natural; phenomenal reflexes. Think Dhoni level reflexes and Jadeja level flexibility and accuracy.

  • I'm so biased when it comes to sport, Ponting and Symonds were amazing but Rhodes was just a freak. There will never be another fielder like him, so many off balance stump throw downs. If anything went near him just take the dot ball!
