Romania, Village Life in Transylvania

A beautiful little documentary of village life in Gyimes, in the South Eastern Carpathians in 2018. Ancient, vernacular, small farm-houses line the stoned side roads on which horse-drawn vehicles carry logs, hay, stone and people this way and that all day long. Most people live by small-scale farming producing their own honey, cheese, bread, veg and fruit, milk and meat. Water is always from the well, pure, sparkling and cold. Cows and sheep wear bells and high above the village the mountain meadows hum with insect life while the extraordinarily rich flora remains untouched by sprays and chemicals.
Szekler people, Romania's Hungarian speaking minority live in Gyimes, which now lies within Bacau county. The history of the area and its association with Transylvania, is very complicated .... I am no historian and apologise for any errors I have made.
Enjoy the film, all taken with a little, hand-held Panasonic HC X920.

  • People spend their whole lives looking for heaven, or trying to get there, and a little slice of it exists right here in this documentary. I've been to Romania and some people would criticize these people as living in poverty, or undeveloped. When really they've managed to hold on to something that we have all lost . My soul has never felt more complete than when my feet are on this land. This video captured this Essence so well. Thank you for sharing...

This reminds me of growing up on our family farm. I miss those wonderfully simplistic, beautiful days. Makes me cry. All of this, all of it is so very close to my own childhood. The horses, cattle, scythes, mountains, countryside. Oh, I can close my eyes and go there, even if for a little while. I want to travel the world. Maybe I’ll find someone who shares my dreams.😇

So deep, so touching, so artistic, it is like a poem for this brave people, the Szeklers, a Hungarian speaking minority. Just to know for the rest of the world: The Szeklers are a Hungarian speaking group of Hungarians (Magyars) and they lived on this place for more than 1000 years ago. They are very hard working people and personally I have a very big respect for them. Thank you very much for this documentary, it is really touched me, a Romanian who saw my country form a really interesting and artistic point of view.

Their later claim to be descendants of the Roman colonists planted there in the 2nd century AD., seems tendentious and improbable, for the Romans' withdrawal from [modern] Rumania ([in] 270) and the appearance of the Vlach states are separated by a millennium in which the country was the property of Slav and nomad and which is devoid of all evidence of Roman survival. Almost certainly the Vlachs came from the western Balkans." These words are aptly corroborated by the French historians Pierre George and Jean Tricart in their book: L’Europe Centrale: - Peuples de I’Europe centrale au XIe siicle).🇭🇺✌🏻Colin McEvedy angol földrajz- és történelemtudós szavai: “A modern Romániában lakó, a latin leánynyelvén beszélő havasföldiek (Wallachians) és moldvaiak (Moldavians) először a 14. században említtetnek.

  • Gosh it reminds me of my Grandfather and how he worked on his small farm in Norfolk. Milked cows by hand, working with nature instead of against it. Grandmother's home made bread, cheese and butter. Preserves, fresh lemonade. Field mushrooms growing around cowpats. Fresh rabbit. The early starts to the day and early nights. 10am every morning Bible reading and prayers for family and country. Cup of tea with home made scones, butter and jam. After lunch without fail listen to the archers on the radio. No tv. No telephone. A simple life of hard work and satisfaction at the end of the day. Watching this video brought it all back to me. Thank you for taking me down memory lane.

    • I love this ... so many comment on the 'cruelty' of using horses to work without having the foggiest idea of how strong and willing horses are. They are not abused nor are they kept in luxury but they are extremely important to the families that own and work with them and hence they are well looked after ... as you understand. Some of them are fabulous, strong types, the blood lines of which should be preserved.

MANY summers, day school got out we were already packed, until the day before school started again. And weekends during the school year. Even though it was in America, Minnesota specifically, we did almost all of the things you show. Except cheese making. But we drank unpasteurized, un-homogenized milk. We could tell which cow it came from. It tasted like the individual cow’s scent. Man, wonderful memories. My Polish aunt looked just like that lady, early on in the video, carrying the two bags. That guy’s a good milker. Every kid should have the chance to grow up on the farm. Thanks for the nostalgia.

  • I travelled through Transylvania for weeks with 4 other students in a beat up old van in 1966 and then with my wife in 1971, by then Ceaușescu's Romania.. Little seems to have changed, though private cars and modern lorries were a rare site then. As well as the people, the food, the flower meadows and small hay stacks there were also shepherds in traditional pristine white costumes and horse drawn vehicles in the style of tiny wild west covered wagons. I think it would on Sundays whole village would turn out in their finest and promenade up down on the village main street. I remember fantastic meals given with generosity. It is one of the most memorable, lasting and profound memories I have.

    • Little has changed. A few things, like de-industrialization. The workforce is exported to Germany, Austria, etc. Romania itself has been stagnating for decades. It's stuck in time as a satrapy which is by design. Germany imports the cheap labor and fuels its industries. The puppet states languish. EU is Imperialism by another form.

    • Glad you mentioned this. It's good to have background on things. There is another channel I've seen recently which is mainly about a woman who lives in the Carpathian mountains in what is now part of the nation of Ukraine. They keep making a point of saying that she is Ukrainian, but she could be one or more of a number of ethnicities. There are far more people of other ethnic groups in that immediate area than there are Ukrainians. In fact, Ruthenia was part of Hungary for a millennium. I think they just started the channel as a propaganda vehicle to get more suckers to donate money to the corrupt Ukrainian government. The videos are long, and yet the woman never utters a single word. I'll bet if she did someone like you could tell what language she was speaking and it wouldn't be Ukrainian. That's why she says nothing. The name of the channel is Food Around the World.

Only when they visit the Uz valley in the video (outside of Transylvania) at 11:05 the sheepherd guy speaks Romanian. And you can see the difference how the Romanians live, what sort of household they have. Dirt, unkempt house and animals. This is in clear contrast with the Hungarian household and estate shown in the rest of the video.
