Can we all agree that Alan Cummings Nightcrawler is one of the most underrated, yet perfectly casted and portrayal of the character? Should've gotten more of his version throughout the series. Also, you'll be surprised to learn that we'll be getting more of Aaron Stanford's Pyro in Deadpool & Wolverine
Alan Cumming was great as Nightcrawler, but sadly he elected not to return as he hated the make-up process, and how long it took to get into character. The tie-in video game to the third X-Men movie explained his absence by saying he disliked the violent nature of the team's lifestyle and adventures and chose to leave the team.
So underused. And I have no idea why.
In the comic it's always been eluded that Nightcrawler (the blue guy with the tail) is related to Mystique. Notice simular skin color? And also in the comics, the secret facility that Logan was taken to for the adamantium grafting was a Canadian secret lab. He then was in a Canadian superhero team called Alpha Flight.
Disagree. He looked cool and his powers were depicted excellently, but his characterization is way off. In the comics, Nightcrawler is a light-hearted, swashbuckling, jovial fellow. Cummings depicted him as morose and introspective. Not like the source material at all. Watch X-Men 97 for an accurate depiction of him.
It is too bad we would never see his Nightcrawler return. No offense to Kodi Smit McPhee, but Alan Cumming does Kurt Wagner more justice. Not just with the makeup, which I understand, not easy to wear constantly; similar to Jennifer Lawrence in the prequels. But also, I like with how Alan portrayed the misunderstood demon who puts his faith in God when others have forsaken and shunned him. By accepting and forgiving their flaws, he, too, can accept and forgive any flaws he sees in himself.
For those who may be interested that may not know this: the blonde at the bar whom Mystique transformed into to fool the Security Guard was in actuality Mystique's actress (Rebecca Romijn) simply without the blue make-up and prosthetics.
And she was gorgeous!

In fairness, you're not the only ones to think wolverines are wolves- before X-Men, Hugh Jackman spent a lot of time studying wolf movements to inform his character, only to discover they're big weasel-bear things!
Yeah if I remember correctly, Jackman also thought they were a made up creature sorta like a werewolf and was talking with someone on set when they informed him they were real and he could see one at the nearby zoo

Nobody can sneak up on or fool Wolverine into believing they're someone else. His sense of smell would've been able to smell that it was Mystique and not Jean. Hell, he could hear that her heartbeat didn't match Jean's.
What's funny is Wolverine is Canadian. In the comics he's about 5' 4" tall. His comic appearance is written to be based on the writers description of a wolverine being a small, hairy, ferocious animal with claws.
Wolverine's first appearance was not even as a mutant at all, just a Canadian super agent / super hero send to keep a rampaging Hulk in check.

Len Wein, the writer who created him, had heard that X-Men was going to be getting rebooted soon, with an international cast, so he made Wolverine a mutant so he could join if they liked the character. Then he actually got tapped to write Giant-Size X-Men, so he made sure to include him on the team!
Plus, Library and Archives Canada has the record of enlistment in WWI of James 'Logan' Howlett. 😁
Logan is based upon an actor in a film about an ice hockey team: 'Slap Shot'. The writer and artist back then were both Canadians, one of British descent, so this was both funny and enormously successful.

Over 20 years of watching this series and anytime I hear those claws pop and Wolverine roar I still smile. Hugh owns this role. Him and Patrick were the heart of these movies and have such amazing chemistry together. You can especially see in Logan how much they trust each other.
It's just too bad that he's far too pretty and a foot too tall to play the extremely hairy 5'3" Logan.
@@AaronLitz I wouldn’t mind a shorter wolverine for the next version but for me Hugh nailed the character. The writing may have let him down at times but Hugh was born for the role. I think Tom hardy would’ve been a fantastic successor

Not only are wolverines rare in the wild, they're solitary and they're good at it. Unless they feel like fighting, in which case they fight every fight like it's their last fight. A wolverine got into a polar bear enclosure at a zoo, and killed the polar bear. That's a 60lb animal defeating a 1,000lb animal.

Well I heard a line from Nightcrawler who at the time said he couldn't use his powers because Jean blocked them. Presumably that's why none of them could do anything at that point.
@@rigrmortis3393 weeell, we saw Storm/Ororo easily conjure up multiple tornados and control them while flying a plane, and using them to defend against missiles. If she has that much fine control over storms, lightning, rain, etc, a minor flood like that dam breaking should have been easy for her. In the comics she WOULD have done it while casually chilling out on a sofa. Unfortunately for plot reasons they massively tuned her down. She is one of three omega level mental power characters in the cartoon that have shown up in the movies. I won't spoiler who the others are. Logan's healing factor is at an omega level as well, but that's about it for him as it is purely physical and passive, so he doesn't classify as a true omega level.
The moment Jean says goodbye to Cyclops gets me everytime. James Marsden absolutely nails his heartbreak, not seeing his eyes if anything makes it worse. More heartfelt than 90% of modern MCU, a wonderful moment that makes me cry each time. All three of Patrick Stewart, James Marsden and Hugh Jackman's performances are so good
Wolverines are real animals, closely related to badgers. They have been described as "100 pounds of mean in a 50 pound bag." Which is kind of funny, because while Wolverine is ferocious and ruthless when needed, and relies a lot on sarcasm, he's not really mean at all.
They're Canadian and don't know what a Wolverine is, it's a giant weasel. Really enjoying their X-Men journey.
Eric isn't actually evil, he just doesn't see a future where mutants are safe from humans and because of that he feels like it his responsibility to save them at any cost. Eric is a product of human mistreatment because of the pain they have caused him over the years. The next few movies will give you a better idea of why he is the way he is.
Logan's power-set makes him frighteningly efficient at violence. And his psychology makes him *terrifyingly* capable of it. And it's a major part of his character arc that he grows from an unstable berserker to a reluctant warrior to someone who makes the *choice* to be a hero.
The best there is at what he does, but what he does best isn't very nice.
It also makes him a great lighting rod.

So....Anti-Hero?
Erik Lehnsherr is my favorite "villain" in any media property. He's so layered and you can't help but sympathize and understand where he's coming from in everything he does. There's a reason him and Charles have remained friends despite being on opposite sides so often.
Often why he's classed as an "Anti-Villain", and often ends up on the Heroes side. He and Charles are based on Martin Luther King Junior and Malcolm X, both with similar goals, but different methods.
He doesn't think things through though. Mutants are being born from "normal" humans so if he wipes out all the normies, the number of new and unique mutants coming into existence will stop or at least slow down.
I think Erik Lehnsherr is that character who skirts on an anti-hero (a character of a story who lacks traditional characteristics that are associated with a conventional hero. While typically guided by the best of intentions, the anti-hero is a classically flawed character with a history of bad decisions and a questionable moral code) and an anti-villain (a villain whose goals or ends are generally benevolent, but their means of getting there are evil. They don't care about what they have to do to enact their master plan). Humanity failed him at a very young age (Holocaust), and then tried using his abilities for evil purposes, and at the end, we are somehow surprised that he turns on those people, and insists on using proven tactics in order to secure and protect mutants. We can understand how Erik ends up becoming so contemptuous of humanity, and is willing to use some very foul tactics to make them pay. For Erik, humanity will inevitably try to destroy all of the mutants, be it out of fear or envy, or whatever other motivating factor involved, and he cares more about the mutants; HIS people.
And I don't get it why they are constantly mispronouncing his name. It's "Lehns-Herr" (German for liege/feudal lord), not "Lehn-Sherr".
His goals are completly understandable, his methods are the questionable part

That moment in the theater everyone cheered so loudly. That and the lake scene at the end with the "bird" under the water.
This was the OG Marvel blockbuster before Disney gathered around the Avengers. People went to see this in theaters as a pasttime and came out thinking, "HOLY CRAP, THAT WAS A GOOD MOVIE!"

What's really hilarious about Cassie asking if a wolverine is a real thing and Carly saying it's "like a wolf" is that Hugh Jackman thought the same thing! During the press tour for the first X-Men, Hugh talked a lot about how he studied wolves and tried to mimic their movements, and a story later went around that he actually studied wolves because he (allegedly) thought that "wolverine" was just another name for "wolf" and only found out what wolverines really are after filming. So, I gasped at how meta the girls' comments were. LOL!
Days of future past is my fav. Getting the old and younger characters together was fun to watch.
A long time ago in the comics, there was a classic, long storyline about a cosmic force that selected Jean because she was so powerful. It was called the Phoenix Force. It possessed her, and she became so powerful she became unhinged, and then was Dark Phoenix. It had a huge impact on the team and Scott. Very famous Marvel story. That is what you see starting here.
45:21 a Wolverine is an actual animal. Also, it is the name of the school mascot in the movie Red Dawn (1984) with a lot of popular actors. You reacted to the movie last year. Remember them shouting: "WOLVERINES!!!" when they were fighting back against the Russians?
That metallic mutant who you described as being like The Terminator is called Colossus. Very well known in the X-Men comic series and don't be surprised if he pops up again in one or more of the films.
I thought she said in the last video that she's already seen Deadpool. I guess she doesn't recognize this Colossus as another version of that one.

In the comics Logan is famously a short guy (5 feet 3 inches) but extremely ferocious. That's why the name Wolverine fits. But Hugh Jackman is 6'3" ! In the first X-men movie they tried very hard to make him look smaller than he really is, even filming him shorter than Scott, but by this movie they gave up on that.
Doesn't surprise me they gave up on the height thing. Hugh Jackman was the focus, and so good in the part they wanted him to look as heroic as possible. Which meant axing some of the quirks of the character.
Hugh Jackman studied wolves in preparation for the role. When Bryan Singer asked him why not wolverines, he replied "because wolverines aren't real".
Doesn't really matter, does it? That isn't his mutation, it's his Army name.
Logan is called Wolverine because in the comics he's very short, like 5'3. He's small and fierce.
Wolverine and Nightcrawler are really good friends in the comics. They both love beer so they’d always go out drinking together
Magneto is a complicated antagonist; arguably the most complicated, in Marvel. He is scarred from the prejudice he experienced in life, especially the Holocaust. He fights for mutants by any means necessary, and he is not always on opposite sides with the X-Men. His methods of force are what make him clash with Charles so much.
I think Doom has a very strong argument of his own.

Good catch! In the comics, Nightcrawler is the son of Mystique and the demon mutant, Azazel. Azazel can also teleport and has the same tail but he's red.
Mystique likes to breed the best traits of mutants. 😂

That story was actually retconned fairly recently, now Nightcrawler is the son of Mystique and the mutant Destiny.
I think in a previous reaction, Cassie said she was amazed she was making Terminator references because she never would have been able to do that before starting this channel. And here Carly is doing it too! And I also think she did it for Rocky 4.

The opening of X2 is still one of the best starts to a film I've personally watched. Nightcrawler, Kurt Wagner is one of my favourite X-Men character who surprisingly got done justice in this film, so used to Wolverine getting all the development but Kurt was done really well in this movie. This film along with First Class and Days of Future Past are my top three X-Men films of all time not including the spin off movies like Logan and Deadpool. Overall my favourite X-Men content in the past 24 years is by far X-Men 97 (2024) an amazing animated series that does justice to every part of the X-Men world. Us X-Men fans have been eating good this year with Deadpool & Wolverine releasing in a few months time as well. X-Men 97 is peak X-Men so I cannot wait for more of this quality of storytelling, Hopefully Deadpool & Wolverine is good as well. X-Men 97 should also be the blueprint for the MCU X-Men. I would feel so sad if we end up with disappointing X-Men films after the amazing X-Men 97.... Just look at Sony with the amazing animated Spider-Verse films and then what do they do... They released Madam Web. So hopefully that quality we see in X-Men animation applies to live action as well.
Personally I hope they do Gambit well in MCU X-Men... but yeah it was nice seeing Nightcrawler get the spotlight in this one
In regards to Madame Web, I knew just from the trailer that it was an underwhelming story. There are a lot of Spider-Man characters that are intriguing, but they need Spider-Man to make things more interesting. With any and all MCU X-Men movies, they really need to do the team justice. One thing that I think can help, and this is just my opinion, is avoiding anything regarding the Phoenix until the characters are more established in the MCU. That whole saga is a nightmare to try and get right in live action. The animated series did a good job because they were allowed to do it over several episodes. Trying to cram it into a roughly two hour movie just causes a lot of context to go missing.
I thought Nightcrawler's story arc was one of the most engaging character stories of this film.
I really enjoyed the two episodes from the X-Men animated series from the 1990's that Nightcrawler appeared in. I'm really glad that he's been shown a bit more in the X-Men '97 series and hope that he becomes a mainstay on the team from now on.
The wolverine is most closely related to weasels, badgers, and otters. You can kind of think of him as a strong, ferocious badger! Don't feel too badly, though. At the beginning of filming X-Men, Hugh Jackman himself thought the wolverine was an imaginary creature based on a wolf. The director had to correct him when he started bringing wolfish traits into his role!
Stan Lee said that the nuclear bomb tests were the reason why mutants were being born more frequently. And yes a female mutant and a male mutant can have a regular human. In the comics Mystique and Sabertooth (the big blond bad guy from the 1st movie) had a kid who is a regular human.
Which pretty much puts to bed the idea that mutants are a different species than humans.
Mystique really gets around.

@@PhilBagels Mutants are one-offs, sometimes called 'sports' in breeding of animals and flowers. If the new / reactivated old (intron) gene is carefully preserved, or survives because it's beneficial to the descendant young, then this may, not will, result in a sub-species or even eventually a separate 'new' species. It's how there are animals in every niche in nature. How there are finches with all shapes of beaks, to eat all sizes of seed and nut, for example. If, for example, Barry Allen, the Flash, were a mutant, and all his kids were also speed-force using mutants, then he could be regarded as a sub-species of humans. If all of them had kids with 'normal' folks, and some inherited the speed and not others, then they would all be humans, not a sub-species, just a bloodline, like a line of fast racehorses.
@@stevetheduck1425 But you can't say that Bobby (Iceman) is a different species from his parents, and at the same time the same species as Ororo (Storm). If all of Iceman's kids had ice powers, and all of Storm's kids had weather powers, they wouldn't be the same species, or even the same sub-species.
It is very common for superheroes to use their abilities with restraint so as not to kill or seriously injure anyone. Wolverine is one of the prime examples of this, since those claws could easily kill. On his own he can be rough, but being with the X-Men keeps him in check. So, when he kills the guy against the fridge, it was a big sign to the audience that he wasn't holding back and was going to behave as if he was facing a bunch of guys with guns who were INVADING A SCHOOL. Given how very PG the first one was, that moment got a big reaction in the theater.
Yes this was a big tonal shift from the first one. Thinking about it compared to most superhero films in general it is one of the most full on in respect to how much violence is shown. Even compared to more recent superhero films. I'm surprised that many scenes in this weren't censored.
@@CoffeeConnected they kind of mostly were censored. Other than red lines in wolverine fights and maybe a few scenes with blood (glass chamber), it was mostly just implied deaths. Not that it was badly done, or even that blood and gore would have made the movie better. It was definitely censored from what it could have been though.
One other power Wolverine has that they don’t make super clear in the movies. He can go into a Berzerker Rage and lose it.
What you gotta do to get PG-13. R movies historically just means less population can pay to watch your production in theaters. Dead Pòol was not just a freak successful movie. It was a wildly successful R movie. @@DomSithe
Him killing that guy was like "OMG HE ACTUALLY USED HIS CLAWS ON A HUMAN AND NOT JUST DUMB BOTS" I felt like my soul was washed away from years and years of Wolvi not being able to properly use his sh*t and him always having to kick/throw human adversaries over the place
45:15 - Hugh Jackman made the same mistake and based a lot of Wolverine’s physicality on wolves for the first movie. i remember his doing press for it talking about how when he’s in character, he’s always eying his surroundings and positioning his nose to the ground and taking in the other characters’ scents, etc. years later, i think on a junket for Logan, he revealed how embarrassed he was when someone clued him in that a wolverine is basically a mean super-badger
Nightcrawler is a good dude. He’s been a part of the x-men for a long time in the comics. He has the power to “teleport” but he needs to see where he is going. When he “teleports” he actually goes through a separate dimension and then reappears in the spot he wants. Can be dangerous though, if there is something in the spot he comes back in, he could become part of it, like a wall, a couch, even a person.

A few thoughts - I remember losing my sh*t at the end scene in theaters, James Marsden's final scenes on the jet are absolutely phenomenal, and Wolverine's line to Cyclops "She made a choice, she chose you" hits a little harder after ep 5 of Xmen 97 (knowing that a certain character was 'chosen' by their love, but didn't live to find out).

Banshee will make his first appearance in the movie X-Men: First Class. The girl who disappeared through the bed is named Katherine 'Kitty' Pryde Code name Shadowcat (although in the comics, she actually went by the code names Ariel & Sprite before settling on her current code name). Has the ability to 'phase'/pass through solid objects, with the side effect of shorting out any electronic system her body passes through, an ability she has put to considerable use in the comics to disable the bad guys' computers & other electronic devices. She also learned how to extend her phasing ability to others by holding on to them & concentrating real hard.
Remember The Last Stand, Origins Wolverine, The Wolverine, Days of Future Past & Apocalypse have end credit scenes. Don't forget to watch those too 😉.
DOFP is still my favorite of the entire series, and is an amazing lead-in to the chronological flashback of FC (exploring the new timeline instead would have been great too, but just impossible to pull off.)

There have been many entertaining superhero films but I've always felt that X2 was the closest to capturing the feel of reading a good comic book.

I have always loved the relationship between Xavier and Magneto.. The amount of respect they have for each other, even though they disagree.. Wish our world leaders and politicians take more inspiration from that.
The fight between Wolverine and Lady Deathstrike was the standout fight and it drew strong reactions and cheers from moviegoers inside the cinema on opening day.
Hugh Jackman as wolverine is up there with one of the greatest casting choices in movie history. Amazing actor

He got one thing wrong, he was Wayyyyyyy to tall. Imagine Superman being short or Robin being taller than Batman. Height is a pretty defining trait for any character, and Jackman was so tall as Wolvie is like five foot five inches. Also he never showed us Wolverine unfortunately, he always showed us Logan, the civilian identity. Like, Superman+ Wolverine are the superhero persona, meaning they both wear underwear on the outside, bright colors, spandex and either a cape or mask for over 35 years, wheras Clark Kent + Logan is the civilian identity and they can walk down the street w/no problem. So if we saw Christopher Reeve flying around as Clark Kent and using his strength as Clark Kent, that would be the equivalent of how Jackman was always the civilian identity of Logan doing all the action, never getting to see Wolverine, which is the name of his SUPERHERO ego. But despite those two things, no wolvie and too tall, he is certainly a fantastic representation of the character. He LOOKED just like Logan and acted just like Logan, he was really amazing and still is. Of course they made him to look + act like Clint Eastwoods movie characters because that's who the Logan character in the comics was actually based on. Jackman was basically doing Eastwood since Logan in the comics was always portrayed to be Eastwood....so I wonder why they didn't cast Clint Eastwood for Old Man Logan??

Mutant births in X-Men stories are kind of like twins in the real world. Non twins have a low chance of having twins but when one of the parents is a twin themselves, the chances are higher for them to have twins. When both parents are Mutants the odds are even more likely.
Logan's rampage through the mansion when Stryker's men attack is my favourite part of this whole movie! And I like the detail of the 6 puncture holes in the fridge door after he impales the soldier against it

The amount of pure joy and cheering when Jean lit up to protect the plane and when the phoenix silhouette appeared beneath the water. I never saw audiences cheer louder than that until Avenger's Endgame when Cap said "Assemble"

Y'all never disappoint. I love the way you two play off each other! X2 was definitely a highlight theater experience. Opening night, just opened a theater across from the street from campus right before finals. Comic geeks, movie nerds and the general movie going public were in awe. The opening scene with Night crawler is so deliciously epic! The whole theater applauded when he saved Rogue too. Fantastic movie, fantastic experience and two fantastic and increasingly nerdy reactors watching it just made my night. Cheers!
In the comics, Mystique (the blue lady) is actually Nightcrawler's mom, but they changed it for the movies so they put in that nice interaction scene instead. And the lady with the adamantium fingernails is in comics too - she is Lady Deathstrike and she has other cybernetic implants in the comics, but they left it out for the movies for some reason. Anyway, some fun facts for you, if you're interested. :)

The thing about Magneto is that he isn't... completely evil or completely wrong. He is extreme. He is the violent revolution. Xavier is... more optimistic. He believes people can work together... be better... he doesn't want violence or casualties... he'll fight for what he believes in, and to save others but does not believe in war as a means to an end. Xavier is also wiser in that he knows a war, will cost lives and unless genocide occurs the survivors will not stay defeated... without trying.
Magneto is way less nefarious than Stryker..whether he is wrong or not .. who knows..! But ok he is wrong because his end call is dominance and not co-existance. Just like US foreign policy the last 60 years.

What you see in the water at the end of the movie is the shadow of a Phoenix, which is a mystical bird that can burn to death and be reborn from the ashes. Jean will become known as the Dark Phoenix.

The ending to X2 had comic book fans so hyped for what was to come, kinda like seeing the end credit scene for Avengers with Thanos. We kinda knew where the story was going, but let's just say only one lived up to the hype.
Calling Colossus Terminator got me laughing. There's a lot of reasons to hate Stryker. He's a lot less human than he claims to be.
Awww, these two have no idea what the Phoenix force is and how it saved and possessed Jean. It’s reflection was what was seen in the water at the end but they couldn’t process what the image was or meant.

I agree as well. I feel like if they did some rewrites to X-men: The Last Stand, including Gambit and cutting out the Phoenix Saga, Rogue could've been done much more justice than what they gave us. Her and Gambit meeting and forming a friendship while Rogue is on a break from Iceman, who's getting closer with Kitty Pryde would've opened the door for a future romance and build her confidence from having someone who chooses to be with her despite the risks to his life, because as Gambit in X-men '97 said, *some things are deeper than skin.* Plus, can you imagine if Rogue and Gambit had been in the lineup alongside Wolverine, Storm, Colossus, and Beast?
Thats true but realisticly among a group of mutants with the powers they have going up against soldiers with guns what could she really have done. Her mutation isent exactly suitable for anything that isent very very close combat. And even then her powers isent exactly instant.
@Shiftry87 Maybe if they had othet controlled mutant subordinates to Stryker, outside of Deathstrike, among the soldiers, it might've made it more interesting and given Rogue more to do. Can you imagine if they had Avalanche, Karma, or Black Tom there? Oh my God, I just had an idea for a rewrite.

This movie began as an adaptation of the X-Men graphic Novel 'God loves - Man kills'. They dropped the villain being a religious nut with a private army acting on his 'voices', and dropped the murders of numerous children he'd been told were mutants, basically it was watered down enormously.

Yes, one of the first X-Men stories I ever read. Marvel was putting out some kick-ass graphic novels in the early '80s. When DC made the format famous with Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen, they were following in the footsteps of Marvel who had started the adult-geared graphic novel years earlier.
Funfact: Wolverine in the end actually ends up with storm they even have a child together.. there's a deleted scene in "DOFP" that pays homage to the comics 💯🍿

Colossus isn't a mini-terminator. He's actually 6'7". Jackman is 6'3" and Arnold "used" to be 6'2" as he shrunk a bit as he got older. He's about 5'10" these days.

I am always sad that Kumiko died before remembering the love her and Wolverine had, and that he killed her without knowing she was someone he loved immensely. In a case of tragedy of misunderstanding in the comics, Kuniko believes Wolverine stole her father's tech, and voluntarily becomes a part of the Weapon X program to seek revenge. They were certainly on again off again in the comics, but this shit just hurts because of Bryan Singer and his bull.
