After over a year of riding them, I share my thoughts on the Zipp 303 Firecrest wheelset.

  • Thanks for the review. I just got these. I hope they have better bearings

    • Thank you. I think from memory my set had the early ZR1 hubs. I've a couple of friends who have purchased the more recent ZR1 hubs and haven't had any issue with the bearings.

  • Hi there mate, I am interested on getting those beauties. You mention the rear bearings, did you replace it yourself ? Standards bearings ? Or something specific ? Any creaking ? Cheers

    • Thanks for reaching out. I've replaced the rear bearings twice now, once with official SRAM/Zipp bearings and last year with third party SKS bearings. First set were fitted by the LBS, and the second set I fitted myself. I absolutely love the rims, but I'm unamoured by the hubs. I've never had a wheelset thats gone through bearings so quickly. With the original and both sets of replacement bearings I found lateral play in the rear hub, nothing to worry about but enough to make you wander about how Zipp have QC'd the hub tolerances. But like I said I love the rims, they've been rideen through some incredibly gnarly terrain and have remained true throughout and the ride feel is fantastic compared to other wheelsets I've ridden in the past. I may very well replace the hubs on them in the future. Hope that helps?

    • @@TheRadGravelRider thanks for the reply. I am between the ZIP and the DT 1400 GRC, I love zip rims, but DT Swiss hubs are probably much better. If you were able to destroy SKF, then something is wrong…you should not have lateral play…🧐

    • @@Nuno_bikes_fun apparently and allegedly it's a something Zipp design in to the rear hubs but god only knows why.

  • Can this wheelset work on mountain bikes?

    • Hi Masao, it very much depends on the axle width of the MTB. The rear hub is 142mm and the front 100mm (both using 12mm thru axles) so if you're frame can accomodate that, then sure. Tyre width wise, the maximum Zipp recommed is 55mm (2.1 inch), so that may limit you again. Personally, if I could fit these to a MTB I'd only do it for a race or event as day to day offroad use drastically wears the bearings down in my experience. I hope that helps.

    • @@TheRadGravelRider I might use a Pirelli Cinturato Gravel H 700x45. But if this can’t work on QR then it will be a no for me. My back end uses QR (non boost) while my fork is thru axle (boost)

      @oasam.cycling@oasam.cycling Жыл бұрын
    • @@oasam.cycling The Pirelli's would be perfect for them. The back end, you may be able to get a QR adaptor, I'm not sure. The front definitely won't work though as Boost is 110mm, so too wide for the ZR1 hubs on the Zipp wheels. You could of course fit new hubs to the rims, but if you're goingto go that route you'd probably be better of getting Zipp 3Zero Motos which are MTB specific wheels.
