Building a Wireless Power Plasma Candle ( Flame Discharge ft. Teslaundmehr)

2021 ж. 28 Қаң.
971 064 Рет қаралды

Imagine a candle that never runs out of wax. One which transmits wireless power, and burns hot enough to instantly melt metal. A plasma flame, which is controlled by a dial. It would be nice if something like that existed. Well, now it does. As a collaboration between Plasma Channel and Leon at Teslaundamehr, this project was one of my favorite builds to date. NOTE: My location is RF shielded, and all precautions were taken to eliminate local RF interference (though, with flame lit, RF interference is near zero).

  • Thanks for watching! PLEASE NOTE: 1) I ensured my location was RF shielded, 2) The candle does not resonate at exactly 10Mhz - closer to 10.8, and 3) I encourage anyone attempting flame discharges in USA, to do so in an RF shielded location as well. Causing interference is literally illegal.

I recognize this great job, no matter how much I messed with tesla coils for over 10 years, last year I discovered the "trap" that this simple circuit becomes with an apparently insignificant change in some variable. When I finally managed to make mine generate 4cm long flames, I decided to took my camera to record, but the circuit stopped working due to the change in the capacitance / frequency of the resonator as soon as I moved away hahaha

  • It's amazing at how people with no engineering training at all can successfully build projects like this! With proper understanding of the circuit theory it would be so much easier to predictably make the circuit work the first time. This is so much better than sitting around playing video games all day!

    @glasslinger@glasslinger3 жыл бұрын
    • Ture! Though, the circuit was precisely calculated to begin with. But, small fluctuations in the design, resulting from building materials, is what causes all the testing and calibration. For example, my 2.5cm diameter resonator is actually 2.65cm, but, is labelled "1 inch acrylic pipe" at my store (25.4mm). So, discrepancies like that already throw the resonance out of wack. Coupled with building it on top a heat sink, creating a capacitive effect, also throws the calculations out of wack.

      @PlasmaChannel@PlasmaChannel3 жыл бұрын
  • This is so cool! I just got mine working - I used a Phase Locked Loop IC as an oscillator to control the gate of the mosfet because I was really eager to try it out, and although it has to be manually tuned to the resonance frequency it works great, with a flame almost one inch long. I will try and start making it self resonating now. Thanks for your inspiring videos!

    @tomg0@tomg03 жыл бұрын
    • Tom, that is a really interesting method i am not familiar with. Do you mind explaining what you mean?

      @PlasmaChannel@PlasmaChannel3 жыл бұрын
    • @@PlasmaChannel Hi Jay. A few days ago I was messing around with phase locked loops, which I could use to generate any frequency between 1 kHz and 100 MHz that can be set digitally, and happened to still have one set up on my desk after watching your video. I then connected the variable output frequency to a mosfet driver which drove a mosfet’s gate. I used a coil very similar to yours. I then added a resonance capacitor. I connected the power and then had to increment the frequency until I saw a discharge at the top meaning that the resonance frequency of mine had been reached, 11.863 MHz. There are many disadvantages to this way though, such as having to manually tune it based on the capacitance of the environment around it, and the mosfet gets really hot. The way you did it is much better - I just really wanted to try it as soon as possible because it was so amazing, but I’m building yours now.

  • Awesome! Those flames look so cool and so dangerous, and the design of your coil is really neat! I have built a 13.56 MHz MOSFET powered coil a few years ago, with similar results. I've found that there are a few things that increase efficiency: -Pick a FET with a high d V_ds/dt rating. This becomes crucial above ~100W, because a parasitic bipolar transistor is triggered if this rating is surpassed, shorting your supply. -Pick a FET with gate structure metallization. Normal FETs have a few ohms of internal gate series resistance, which leads to high losses. Metallized gates can have way below 1 Ohm, which is important at several amps of gate drive current. Also, lower resistance means better resonance. And yes, you can actually burn an uncooled MOSFET just by driving it at these frequencies. Don't ask how i found out...

  • I would start by measuring the LC secondary/150pF resonant frequency at low voltages, using a nanoVNA or a signal generator and the scope. Once you know this, then it would be a much simpler matter to tweak the driving oscillator to get to the same frequency. You'll be in the ballpark a lot quicker, and burn through less components along the way.

The truth is that even a video of a "cute something" will have a dislike. Research has been done on this topic, look it up. Also, if it makes you feel any better, yes, it is possible that some douche disliked this video because the resulting project is not child-friendly. Such is as likely as someone did not like the solder joints, someone did not like how he mounted something, someone did not like the way he described something, someone did not like his hair...just dumbass kids living in a basement that have never accomplished anything being judgmental of others, and just worthless oxygen-thieving trolls who are picky to the point of ordering fries with a specific salt-grain count on each fry. The world is filled with whiners, entitled losers, non-unit-producing complainers...the reasons for the dislikes are as varied as the people who leave them. Only one thing is for certain, they are the ones that make the world a shitty place to live. They are also the type of person that would let their kids fall into gorilla enclosures at the zoo.

  • The one hand rule is useless against high voltage high frequency. The good news is that you cannot get electrocuted, it just burns you, so it’s like ordinary fire... except it goes through wires.

    • I was playing around with a flyback once, at a couple of tens of kilohertz and I got zapped off of a piece of sheet metal that was lying on the floor not connected galvanically to any of the wiring, just from capacitance. It gave me a small shock, equivalent to accidentally brushing against mains on an isolated floor, though the burn mark it created was quite unpleasant. I still have a tiny pinhole on the tip of my finger nearly a year later.

    • As per usual electrical safety goes though, voltages exceeding somewhere in the ballpark of 50-60V whether AC or DC is considered potentially dangerous. This may not be true for everyone but a standard has to be set somewhere. Dc bus voltages on the circuits can sometimes reach that high, or more.
