why did no one understand the met gala theme? 💍💰🧐 (met gala 2022 gilded glamour reaction)
held annually on the first monday in may, the met gala is fashion's biggest night and the most exclusive event in the world. this year's event had the dress code "gilded glamour", referring to the gilded age of the late 19th century. as per usual, many celebrities completely missed the mark when it came to following the theme, with some taking inspiration from marie antoinette, the regency era, and even the 1920s. in today's video we take a look at fashion from the gilded age and react to some of the outfits celebrities wore to the met gala. who had your favorite look?

It's really insulting when the met gala just becomes an exhibition for designer brands to show off their ready-to-wear like any other runway and not like an actual themed extravagant ode to fashion. It is so utterly boring and disappointing.
Sad to see such little creativity and imagination and so many uninspiring guests

I just think the people who were invited they need to either have more people that are not so much celebrities have it as a mixture so have underground artists that understands the fashion trends what they need to do is just stop inviting so much celebrities that just don't get it the one that didn't make the effort this year don't invite them for the next time and make it mutual 50% of celebrities in the other 50% of people who do activities write books fashion underground writers and so on
@@poonywooon yeah tbh the term charity is too generous for this ultra capitalistic and elitist event
if you’re a designer and you’re hired to design an outfit for the MET GALA, you should see that as your opportunity to do tons of research and perfect the look as much as possible
yeah i mainly blame the designers, especially of the older fashion houses
Clearly most of the designers are a bloody joke 😂
And yet the celebrities still wore it gave the designer no direction and also thought it was a good idea. It’s just as much the celebrities fault
@@itsnoteasybeinggreen-oz4ul while choosing designs the celeb will ofc have a say in it. I mean, that clothes, was tailored. So ofc it have to match the wearer. And ofc, the celebs will definitely have a rough idea of what to make and what inspires it. and then the designers makes some designs for them to choose. Soooo, they both have some part in the making 😅
@@itsnoteasybeinggreen-oz4ul Sometimes designers will gift celebrities with something to wear, and other times it’s a collaborative work, like how Blake’s was. I haven’t heard if there are many celebrities that pay for an outfit, or rather they pay and collab with the designers. All in all, mostly all of these celebrities have money to pay a designer to construct a dress for them, or collab and do research together.
“I honestly didn’t really think about it.” And there are aspiring costumers who would have KILLED to have a shot at that theme. I would love to see a video of costumes people have made in response to the event.
she should be banned from upcoming met galas
Well seems like she doesn't think a lot... at all. It was a missed opportunity. I'd rather see someone slay the theme than being super individual with something completely off or not fit at all.
They never get tired of telling us how stupid they are.
that would be a dream video
This year's theme was one of the easiest and most accessible. It was also the year in which the fewest amount of people dresses to the theme. Disappointing. Blake Lively, Sarah Jessica Parker, Billie Eilish,. and Hamish Bowels were all on point for The Gilded Age theme. I also loved Alicia Key's New York themed dress. And stop inviting the Kardashians. They treat it as their own fashion show and nothing else.
SJP referenced Elizabeth Keckley, in an 1860s inspired gown. That makes her not on theme, given that the Gilded Age started in 1870, and had a wildly different silhouette.
I can’t believe that ppl like Kim Kardashian or Cardi B get to wear looks and outfits of former superstars/icons. It just physically hurts me.

literally omg! it’s so entitled
@BlackVenus literally!!! it's so lazy and lacking creativity
@BlackVenus that part!
A lot of them did half didn't it's not their fault the designer is the one making the dress and putting on them before the gala who should be blamed. We know most celebrities don't know the theme or dress themselves and if they do they might be critiqued or receive backlashed in a way that makes them overwhelmed which is not good for any person. They also have busy schedules they can't possibly be able to handle, that's why they hire people.
@BlackVenus it’s confusing when Anna Wintour doesn’t even follow the assignment. If she doesn’t, why would anyone else?!
Im literally so angry that 70% of the celebs DIDNT UDERSTANDDDD is literally so easy 😭😭 they could literally google "guilded glamour" and have better outfits
Why are you so affected when it has nothing to do with you? They were the ones invited so they can wear whatever they want. If they follow the theme or not its up to them.
While this is true, the “second gilded age” is the 90’s and a LOT of these dresses had “gilded age” influences while having a more modern “second gilded age” silhouettes and shapes. (Olivia Rodrigo for example)
@@fu6555 Lmao we are still allowed to give our opinions, we don’t want to dress them for the met gala we are just giving our observations.

If i google it now I just get Met 2022 references
I understand the complaints that Blake Lively's dress wasn't a perfect match to the era, BUT, I refuse to hate on it because it was very inspired (maybe just inspired by the wrong thing), it told a story, and it truly was a gorgeous dress. Putting aside the theme complaints, her whole look was an absolute SERVE.

@@javonacw Very true! I love them so much as a couple
God, it looks like a princess dress and I mean that as a huge compliment. it's magical and tells a story. I'd kill to wear something that beautiful.
this is kind of ironically fitting for the gilded age theme, since the glamour of that time period was very surface level....people looked wealthy & opulent but it was all for decoration/show, and hiding the extreme wealth disparity at the time. it's a funny reflection of that period into modern times, with all these rich celebrities flaunting outfits that aren't even good, just because they can, while the poor remain poor.
So spot on. They choose The Guilded Age perhaps to represent today's Guilded Age with the same eggregious corruption and economic disparity. Of course this part of the theme was flaunted by these so called elites to flaunt their wealth. Nothing new under the sun.

Blake’s dress has grown on me considerably since I read her explanation that it’s about gilded age architecture rather than gilded age fashion. I appreciate that outside the box thinking. It would still have worked better if the train’s update had been a gilded age bustle shape, but I do love the marriage of architecture and fashion.
You comment makes me think you must love Mugler ! (He did architect studies before turning to fashion, explaining his love for volumeee !)
Kim's wearing of Marilyn Monroe's dress was egregious, no questions asked. It should not have happened and she didn't do it justice in the least. She wore a replica for the majority of the event so I don't see why if needed to be worn in the first place and it didn't fit the theme at all. The best look of the night I would say went to Ashton Sanders. Absolutely brilliant and one of the few people that paid attention to the theme spot on.
They should have a section in the crowd at the met gala where poor people get to throw rotten fruit at the celebrities like they did in William Shakespeare’s plays at the globe theatre
Anna wintour should be sitting on a throne at the top of the red carpet entrance gladiator-style to pass judgement to each celeb's Look as they arrive. Thumbs up, they carry on into the event. Billie Eilish absolutely nailed the theme of the Gala (and it's only her second one), that dress was perfect for her and she was adorable and proud to wearing it.
I do adore her dress but personally I don't know if it's hers. You know what I mean? Personally I think she needs A: more size and support for her girls, of course it's a corset this time so there's a reason but they just looked squished and uncomfy, and proper corsetry is supposed to replace a bra and I really think they did her dirty with the support necessary. And B: something darker/more pigmented to balance out the pastels she's been bringing to the table, because her skin is so pale and it really does wash her out and it's such a shame cause she's a gorgeous gorgeous girl. She has done brilliantly with the themes tho and I'm super excited to see what she gives us in the future xx
she looked stunning
@@heatherheath3834 i love the way u worded this , saying your opinion without being mean to anyone and you have a lot to say . i bet ur great at conversations in real life
Kim Kardashian's look was definitely my least favorite. Not only was it not on theme but it was also horribly disrespectful to not only Marylin Monroe but also to fashion history in general. A dress inspired by Marylin sure we can overlook that but to take the actual dress was egregious.
She knows it works: she doesn't know WHY it works
If she'd made a replica of the dress, that would have been fine. Instead, she wore the original and let her body oils come in contact with a vintage, priceless historical dress because she's a selfish, disgusting piece of trash. I didn't care about her one way or the other before, but now I despise her.
After Black Lively's dress, it was quite lazy too..
I wholeheartedly agree!! It’s a disgrace that this woman gets to wear Marylin’s dress!!
@@heatherheath3834 She doesn't know HOW it works. She definitely doesn't have MM's sex appeal.
Honestly, if they invited cosplayers or other people that genuinely cared, we would see a very different event and it would be amazing.
Cosplayers wear costumes and although this is for the met’s costume department, the people attending do not want to be seen as wearing costumes, but as wearing high fashion.
@@aname9417 doesn't change the fact that a Ciel Phantomhive cosplay would've been more on theme that whatever these ppl are wearing.
Your intentions are good but regular folk wouldn’t be able to pay the 30k per plate and without it they wouldn’t be able to keep the tickets the place it is the rest of the year… is not exaggeration to say that this night alone is about of 70-80% of their anual budget.
Cosplay and high fashion are two extremely different things. This wasn't an anime convention.
I'm just saying cosplayers take themes seriously. If they were working with designers to create high-fashion outfits to fit a theme, it would be way better than what these celebrities do. And yeah, most of us can't afford it, but this is a hypothetical situation. The intention is not that they would actually invite cosplayers, because they never will, but the knowledge that there are people out there who would very much do the research necessary to respect the theme.
I love this video. Everything you said made so much sense. They should have you send the invitations to the guests next year with a short history reference video attached. I was captivated by all of the history and would have loved to see some of these designers do their spin on it.. Getting the theme right is what makes seeing the event so exciting. Thank you for putting so much details in this video.
The theme was an anthology of fashion, part two of the lexicon theme. Dress code being gilded glamour is not the same thing as it being the theme
Yes I think that the Met Gala used to be more exclusive to artists that valued art as opposed to those that just think of it as ‘just another night’… or didn’t think of it at all like certain Kardashians.
pretty sure they did briefly explain the theme history in the invite, assuming what I saw was legit
Apparently Sebastian Stan didn’t completely miss the mark on the theme, since the gilded age was a time when new synthetic dyes were developed. The color magenta and other “neon” colors had not previously been used on clothing. So while yes, the silhouette of Seb’s outfit was modern, the color was quite representative of the gilded age (I hope I recalled this correctly, as I only read it in other comments)
If that so then he only got 2% of the theme..
@@laramiaizz I don’t think he had any hand in it, his stylist clearly did everything as he posted on his Instagram as well.

It’s not like they tried and failed, they don’t even go for the theme. They don’t care -it’s all about “influencing” and the display of wealth and connections. Instead of celebrating creativity, this is yet another space that has been invaded by vapid celebrity. Thanks, Anna.
Exactly! so tired of these no name "celebrities" people who have done What???
I think Anna should stop inviting some of these celebrities. They NEVER follow the rules
you actually have to pay even if you are invited! however Addison Rae and Emma Chamberlain arent really celebrities at all. speaking of "influencing" more often than not the entire Kardashian troupe is more focused on trends and showing off their paid for hourglasses than have fun with a theme
Well put, and Anna didn't even bother either. She mails it in year after year.
100% my thoughts … the lack of humility is gross. It’s like a slap in the face for fashion lovers. It’s ironic that the people who can afford fashion couldn’t care less.
Sebastian Stan's suit def angered me the most because it could have worked if he hadn't worn casualwear. Just IMAGINE if he had done the full gilded age white tie look, but in hot pink! It would have been much more exciting
Damn, you’re so right
As much as I like the Sebastian Stan I absolutely hate his team that chose this look in the first place. Had a crush on him after watching Captain America and the Winter Soldier so it really pains me to see what his team is doing with him. He needs better stylists.

you have to blame the fashion companies that reach out to them a little bit too. if valentino was trying to dress me in all hot pink and was paying for the whole outfit i’d probably let them too. it’s very obvious when celebrities don’t have an advantageous partnership with brands because they look a little lack luster. but still it’s not really an excuse
Imagine the narcissism involved in trying to wear Marilyn Monroe's actual dress. Simply wearing that dress has guaranteed that it will exist for probably decades less than it would have if properly taken care of. And you could tell it wasn't made to fit her at all. There's stress wrinkles on the hips and the bust and everything just doesn't sit right. Then there's the whole "I had to lose 16 pounds in 3 weeks to fit it." that is just disgusting considering how many people who saw that struggle with eating disorders. I even had to explain to my sister, who said "everyone talks about Marilyn Monroe having an achievable, natural body shape, But even Kim Kardashian had to lose 16 lb to fit her dress." that Kim K had to lose 16 pounds of fat that she'd had taken out of its natural position on her body and injected into her butt, hips, and boobs, and that of course her extremely artificial body shape had to shrink in those areas to fit in a dress made to perfectly fit a natural human woman's body shape. There was no BBL back in Maryland's day to suck all the fat out of her arms and waist and shove into her hips and ass. Just imagine ruining one of the most historically relevant items of clothing in American history only to look that mediocre in it, exactly like it wasn't made for you.

Thank you for your thoughtful review. The Gilded Age is probably my favorite fashion Era and I learned so much from your video.
This video was very well done. I intended to watch highlights only, but I watched every second after being pulled in with the fashion history lesson. Flawless, my dear.
They should put in the invitation “Failure to follow this year’s theme will no longer be invited to the next Met Gala”
There were mistakes all over. The Met said gilded glamour. NOT the "Gilded Age" Glamour.
THAT would help a lot!
I wish !
They definitely should have! And they should’ve always did since forever urghhh
Sounds kinda harsh to me, idk 🦧
If this was a drag race category and they were competing, “they’re all bottoms”
I desperately want them all to lip synch for their lives 🤞
Except Blake Lively, that girl from Bridgerton and Rosalia
This calls for a lipsync Lollaparuza
girls on drag race would have 100% done a better job.
The drag community would’ve given so much more by using some curtains and random dollar store shit
I'd say that I couldn't agree more with every single one of your comments regarding Blake's dress. FINALLY. Thank you loads.
Ben Platt in the mens corset!!! wow, mega wow!!! best look. I loved watching this video not only for the met gala fashions but also the movies of yesterday-year ♥️ retro montage heaven
It should be mentioned too that the outfit worn by Quannah Chasinghorse represented the resilience of indigenous people despite the attempted erasure of their communities by the elite of the gilded age, which I think is just as relevant as any other celebrity who nailed the theme.
This¡ 🙏🏻
Absolutely. She was stunning. That beadwork with the flowing fabric looked like she could float. A brilliant showing.
Shit man I didn't know this - thx for bringing attn to it 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Absolutley gorgeous
Definitely my fav!!! It was true to the historical theme with an important “twist” idk if twist is the right word, but I hope I make sense
Every year I’m so disappointed by these clueless-and worse, uncaring-celebrities who wear just anything to this event. The Heavenly Bodies and Camp years peaked as far as number of decent on-theme looks go, and this year was the worst turn out I’ve seen.
You think the Camp Met Gala was a good year? It definitely had some high highs but also some absolute fails. Especially on the men's side and the lack of understanding of camp not being low-level costume comedy.
@@thealmasy4360 It definitely didn’t have the water-in-the-desert effect as Heavenly Bodies did on debut, but for me, at least, a decent enough amount of people brought it. Certainly better than this year lol
@@saam3712 just because some songs have similar chords and beats doesn’t mean they were intentionally stolen. There are so many songs that sound similar but are completely different. Seeing KK wearing that iconic dress that should NOT be wore by any other than Marilyn was heartbreaking. For me, it was like Trump buying the Mona Lisa to hang it in the bathroom.
it looked tacky on KK and didn't fit her body or aesthetic properly. I hated it and I dont understand why the Kardashians are still invited if they never follow the theme and dont even care to be there.
YES! I completely agree. It was so distrespectful.
Exactly! A travesty and I hate that they let her wear it.
The sl*tshaming and general misogyny that surrounds kim because of her past is getting really tired. Whether you like her or not, she is a high fashion icon.
@@marshmallow.fireside your comment is completely unrelated on what we’re talking about-
A show called literally "The Gilded Age" came out this year, they couldn't have it more easier than THAT.
The clothes were pretty accurate too 💀
the clothes their weren't accurate historically
Yes, that was what I thought of when I saw most celebrity types. Awful stylists for 99% of the outfits. I think they were dressing for the Oscars or Golden Globes, pathetic effort!!!
😂😂😂😂😂This comment took me out a Google search wouldn't be bad either
IT WAS NOT about gilded AGEEEE!!! YOU GUYS... it was about gilded GLAMOUR..very different eras!!!!.in the 1870's to 1890's (industrial revolution and economic growth) gilded Glamour was used in America to "CONCEAL THE SOCIAL UNREST AND TURMOIL OF THE ERA" , to cover up and distract from political turmoil...like in the hunger games and.kind of what's happening right now with Ukraine yet everyone's putting attention to Will Smith, Jonny Deep's trial and now this event 🤦🏻♀️

I guarantee you, if they had chosen a "Shein-Theme" this next year, the celebrities and stylists would STILL find a way to butcher the theme.
The Heavenly Bodies theme was the best one of the recent years. Most celebs showed out and looked glamorous while on theme. I’ll never forget Chadwick Boseman’s heavenly suit, may he RIP.
He got it right because he’s actually an American Aborigine. By blood.
I liked the Camp theme too because there were some LOOKS there as well
heavenly bodies was on another level. i wish we can get another theme like that because the past couple of years have been very meh
kim kardashians’ look was like TRASH
You not only nail it, but you gave the best report on the galla, and I covered and saw a few... Bravo, Bravo, Bravo
Thank you for this! I needed the history and background to finally connect this to the critiques of the guests' outfits; other critiques out there just seemed a little biased and out of context without it. Also, thank you for referencing other cultures in this time period of America.
Not only was Kylie's outfit off theme, she didn't even sell it. She looked uncomfortable and miserable, which only made it worse.
Kylie wore this in honor of his friend that recently passed away, she obviously knew this was out of theme but she wore for this for sentimental value
@@elithefairy6495 I wish she did it at a different event or for the after party, or her own Instagram post..not the met gala which has a an actual dress code to embody..I dunno just my opinion
Seriously . Unfortunately, it wasn't done well, regardless of her intent. It looks like a novice fashion disaster, which given the ego and resources of the family, I feel comfortable acknowledging.
@@elithefairy6495 that’s sad but maybe do it somewhere else
I thought kylie and Kris totally looked out of place n the looks they wore was awful
Blake Lively was 11/10. The reference to Lady Liberty and New York more generally, the former is a gift from the Gilded Age and the later was cemented as the center of America during those four decades.
It didn't have the right aesthetic. She was ok... everyone else failed so miserably that it made her look better. I get the concept but she still missed the mark. She got a C, everyone else got an F.
Well done video. You were spot on with your critiques. I learned a lot from your very educated narrative. Thank you.♡
My personal favourite look was Anita I loved the prurple rich colour of her dress and the pearls! Omg the pearls were everything they matched the dress and gave a upper class/royal feel (yk the purple)
300% THIS. I was so bored and upset with most of the looks this year. I actually don't mind it when things veer off into more "costume" territory. For the Met Gala, I'm looking for designers and their muses to take risks and swing big. If they go a little too far, at least we know that they were aspiring to something more avant garde, something greater than every awards season red carpet looks. Honestly, I didn't expect much from the celebrities who bought their way in; but for those invited by and dressed by A-list designers and STILL managed to completely miss the mark?? I was really quite appalled. This year's gathering was very disappointing for me.
I think Blake livelys dress was nice and creative. She was probably one of the only ones who took the theme seriously.
I was very disappointed! There were so many amazing looks that could have been worn, and I was excited to see what all the guests were going to come up with. It was such a fun and gorgeous theme! If I had hosted "Gilded Glamour" in my own home, my friends would have come more on theme and more fun to admire than most of the Met Gala attendees. I'm glad you are calling this out.
Wintour couldn't even care to follow the theme. It makes you wonder if most of these celebs/wannabe celebs have any creativity, its as if they just wear what they want to wear, which is totally boring & disappointing. I'll make sure to never invite them to any of my masquerade balls or themed galas. ;)
Yeah they really failed this year. There were three people whose outfits I likes. Kylie Jenner made me want to melt through the floor
I definitely missed some of the more campy or avant-garde elements, majority of the guests just looked bored and like they grabbed whatever was in their closets just to get out of the house 🙄 you would at least expect the models or asks for something on theme since they look amazing in anything they wear
Shout out to bad bunny and his team. Great to see guys really going after these themes and choosing interesting outfits that will hopefully inspire others to avoid taking the safe black tux route.
Yes!
If Chadwick was still alive I’m sure he would’ve killed this year’s and last year’s look since his 2018 look was one of the best
I didn't like it but I still prefer that over the other male attendees
I hated his look. Man looks like inspector gadget :/
I loved it ❤️🔥 he’s not afraid to make bold moves no matter what people will say
✨🔥🔥 17:10 nailed it! On theme, modern flair, and historically accurate 🔥🔥✨
Thank you for the fashion education......with a little bit of shade thrown in. I loved it 😍
Nicola Coughlan did an excellent job of taking inspiration from the period while heightening it into a more contemporary look. She did that and she managed to add her own personal touches by my making it an homage to her character in Bridgerton. You could tell she had fun playing with the theme and collaborating with her designer. She even said in an interview, "I always watch the Met at home in my pajamas with no makeup on and eating crisps, and judging them like, 'Oh they didn't do the theme very well.' So I was like, 'If I actually go, I've really got to do the theme, or what's my life been about?" The way she talks about the look and the way she carried herself at the event, it's clear that she really cared, not about showing off to the other rich people in the room but about entertaining the audience she knew would be watching.
Omg. She’s such an icon. Lady Whistledown showed up and showed out
I love her so much and her character in Bridgerton!!
Love her sm💖 She slayed!
I love her but I think she still could have done so much more with the look
@@godsentmeheretorockyou Could she have pushed some boundaries and done more? Probably. But this is still an incredibly impressive first showing considering she's really only started putting herself in the fashion world within the last two years and this is her first Met (especially when comparing her look with many of the other debuts). She can challenge herself more in the future, but I'd say she's made a great first impression and she's set the tone for herself nicely.
What I don’t understand is even when the celebrities don’t get the theme, surely the fashion houses dressing them should be stepping in? Don’t they want to represent their brand well? Aren’t they embarrassed to be putting out subpar looks that make it seem like they have no appreciation or understanding for fashion history? Babes, this is your life, your livelihood, your legacy. Take some pride in it! Put in some effort! Make it make sense lol Edit: Thank you to all the replies for reminding me that capitalistic greed will always be the biggest trend 😂 no one would be caught dead wearing artistic integrity these days…
This is what I was thinking !
Preach!! This is so true! I’m sad there were so little accurate pieces. It’s frankly embarrassing like you said!! They’re representing their brands and yet the far-cry from the theme is really disappointing!!
Sad thing is that I think it is mostly the brands to blame. I don't think they care about the theme at all often, they just want to showcase their current work. Why they wouldnt use that as an opportunity to do a themed twist on their current designs...I have no idea!
I get where you’re coming from, but if Anna Wintour isn’t even dressing like the theme for the met gala how are others too? Lol they all looked bad.
Period!!!
love the shot out to Sanders! the gilded age overlaps w the victorian age, just fyi thanks for the breakdown!
What shocked me more than the clothing fail was that the hair styles missed the mark as well! I just don't understand! What were the stylists thinking? WHAT WERE THE HAIR STYLISTS THINKING!!!! I was appalled! Maybe the gala needs to be more exclusive? Maybe those that didn't even try should be given a miss next time.
I wanna take a minute to blame Anna Wintour. She has the final say in everything the guests wear but let's them stomp around looking sloppy and off theme. She's really ticked me off the last 10 years with how she'll put anyone anywhere to sell copies of Vogue. I mark the moment I lost respect for the magazine when she put Kim and Kanye on the cover when they got engaged. That's not vogue that's tacky and it aged like milk. I remember watching a couple documentaries on Anna and how the people around her willingly admit she's all about keeping Vogue alive with the most relevant celebrities, even if it sacrifices the integrity and romanticism of fashion. There's no excuse for these celebrities to run around the MET looking so off theme and sloppy when she has the final say on what they wear. Anna is such a sellout in fear of being irrelevant and it's deteriorating modern fashion as we know it. Side note: I do like Blake's outfit because she's so girly and I know she was excited to have a Sleeping Beauty moment. It's true to her own style but nodded to the theme enough for me to respect it. There were more on theme looks but the architecture and technology used in her garment created an iconic look. There was clearly thought and effort but into it and it was fashion forward enough so I don't mind it.
🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
I literally couldn’t agree more. I think what’s so annoying is when celebrities think if they dress in something sparkly that is all that is required at the Met. A good example is that actress from Euphoria called Barbie in last years theme, she wore this outrageous Pearl outfit and said in the interview that when she was invited to the Met all she wanted to do was go insane with the outfit and for it to be all decked out, like 🤦🏻♀️ there is a theme. You can’t just wear a dramatic piece and call it a day, it has to relate in some way. I agree with what u said abt Blake as well, I feel it referred to the theme just enough that I was able to actually appreciate it.
Yesss , so true !!! Anna Wintour is the One Who destroy the concept of real Couturier , by transforming Vogue America into a mediocre , low level s designers promoter , people that are musicians ( Rihanna , K. West , Gwen Stefani ) , Just a boring clothes magazine , without the Allure , the Innovation , the real Best of Couture as use to be. Vogue Italia , Vogue France are on onother level
I agree that the met gala is starting lack creativity and participation. I understand not personally liking changes to vogue because everyone has different taste. But yall need stop trying to put artist in boxes. Just because someone is a singer or rapper doesn't mean they're not capable of doing anything else. Rihanna and Kanye are both big contenders in the fashion world. They're both talented fashion designers not just entertainers. Both have made huge impacts in terms of trends. Kanye literally interned at the Fendi house. Anything he sales instantly sell out, and multiplies in re-sale value.
@@savorycity2252 No , Rihanna and West , are not designers , are singers with a very Active , even too much , social media s Life , they can influence lots of people , mostly in the USA only.... in Europe they re considered a joke as fashion stylist , but Anna Wintour , Who destroyed Vogue America s reputation , pick up and promote this pseudo fashion because they re famous people , not for their talent in this field . All their collections are a Mediocrity s Triumph, they May sell a lot in the USA , but they re NOT couturiers.
I think a cool idea would have been to do the dress in the gilded age silhouette but using sequin work, modern fabrics, organza, etc. To show the layers and the detailing..
Would have loved to see that!
Maybe you should host a met gala with a theme that others can understand and provide photos for the visual learners to

Incredibly sad that it was not expounded upon. I love that era, and your so right there are many recourses and examples to take from. Honestly for me there were no favs only fails. imo. Cheers
Blake Lively’s dress was absolutely GENIUS. The dress “aged” with the statue both in color and in style. When the Statue of Liberty was new it was more bronze colored, and she had the bustle silhouette to match the time period during which the Statue was new. Later when the Statue became green, the silhouette of the dress changed as well. It was no longer gilded glamour, but it was another type of glamour-old Hollywood glamour. Plus, it said “anthology” and she managed to show off two styles in one dress, somehow managing to meet all three parts of the the themes in one dress. Whoever designed that dress was an absolute genius.
More of this for the ppl in the back🙌 and everyone asking me, Do YOU even KNOW the theme?
I agree... most beautiful of the night
Yes! And the dress fits her really well! I cannot imagine another person wearing it!

In the internet age, where it takes less than 2 minutes to research the "Gilded Age," there's really no plausible excuse but for laziness and indifference.
To be fair, the theme said "gilded glamour," not "Gilded Age glamour." Easy to interpret that different ways. However, you'd expect someone who was actually going to be really, really sure of what they intended by the word "gilded" and actually inquire whether they meant gold clothing, or if they meant the Gilded Age.
I really appreciated your video. I have not followed the met gala before but this year I am very into learning more about it and I feel like yours was very informative and enjoyable to watch. Maybe before the next one you could go over expectations given the theme. I would love the see your thoughts before while I watch it live.
Great explanantion. Thank you for all the background history
It felt kinda off having a historical artefact such as Marilyn's dress at a celebrity event. The dress was only ever worn by Marilyn and it has been preserved like it has been frozen in that era of time. The owner of the dress should've never lent it to her in the first place as it was such a iconic piece of fashion history. If she was going to wear a replica why did she have to wear the actual thing??? Thats like a celebrity renting the Mona Lisa painting for a house party then taking it away when people start drinking and eating like it's kinda disrespectful. I'm sure it was never their intention to be disrespectful but the excuse of ignorance only goes so far. EDIT: I just want to be clear my argument isn’t to say who is more beautiful in the dress Kim or Marilyn. My argument is a piece of historical value that is in a museum and is being looked after and preserved has been taken out for a joyride and in the process has suffered damages to that piece of historical value. A few professionals in the history area have already stated how this can be damaging to this piece and how it shouldn’t be worn as a costume you can go read those if you’d like but that’s my point my point isn’t to say who looks better my point is you just don’t tamper with historical artefacts no matter who the person is.
It’s not the original, its a copy :) Edit: sorry yall I didn’t knew it was the original one

I'd like to say that Blake Lively's dress seems much more political than aesthetic. Although the Gilded age is mostly known for its aesthetic, it is actually categorized by the political and economic atmosphere in the US. A huge event that happened in the Gilded age was the arrival of the statue of liberty. One of the things it represents is freedom from oppression (shown by the broken shackles) which is ironic due to the government and economic corruption that set the basis for the categorization of the Gilded Age. So Blake's outfit is perfectly on theme and went above and beyond.
yessss
🙄 the irony of Blake Lively getting married at a slave plantation but then referring to broken shackles. Can’t make this shit up 😂
And it looks so pretty
Couldn’t have said it better myself!
I really agree, and as an architecture lover, I loved the aesthetic of it so much. Her and Ashton Sanders are the best dressed imo.
I did not expect to learn so much about fashion. Well done! I am glad I found this!
I fr hope you are publishing these essays academically this is incredible
It’s a little bit soul-crushing when (as someone who’s never going to go) you can think of so many exciting outfit ideas that fit the theme, yet some people (who can go) kind of take it for granted and just disregard the theme entirely. I know to them it's not really about the theme and they usually look great regardless but it's still kind of sad that so few of them care about it, because that's partly what makes it different from other red carpet events (fashion-wise).
Because they don't care. It's a socialite event more than a clothes event. The guests matter more than the clothes. We take it too seriously. The fashion is just a facade.
I agree. It's honestly hurtful that they have all these resources and stylists and still manage to make a mess. Smh.
Most celebs are there to look good and make the best dress list, and talk and network. They are not their to follow the theme.
Why are you so affected when it has nothing to do with you? They were the ones invited so they can wear whatever they want. If they follow the theme or not its up to them.
😂
Honestly I really loved Blake lively's dress...the idea of creating a dress inspired by the statue of liberty is so unique and was done veryyyy well
The colors AND styles changed with the statue’s age too. At the beginning it was a new copper color, and she matches it with the bustle silhouette, then later when the statue turned green the dress’s silhouette changed to a more modern one as well. Whoever thought of that was a genius.
It was amazing...for last years theme
The theme is usually somewhat up to interpretation right, but the dress code isn’t? So white tie, high society was what I was expecting. In that way, Blake’s dress & the transformation fit for me. I can see where different trends of fashion were used in the dress even though it wasn’t a literal dress picked from that era. You could think of it as something she might wear to a Vanderbilt costume party. lol Another person that took a trend in mind was Jessica Chastain who was dressed as a medium.
Girl we all did. She won.
Agree - plus, her nice slim figure wears it well!
Can we get videos like this but with Met Gala themes and outfits that were spot on? I love theedscriptions/ explanations and seeing the creativity of the designers executed well.
I love how informative the video was! How about a met gala for the regulars to show them how it’s done😊
Billie Eilish was honestly the only one I thought hit the mark perfectly. It was still modern in color, but it kept the silhouette of the time period - 1870 to 1900. It's rather depressing that attendees in general didn't get this theme! I love that time period of fashion. Who wouldn't love to wear a version of Scarlett's red dress!?! I would have loved to!!
That's exactly what I was thinking!!! Why didn't someone wear that (OK I mean why didn't Kim.K get that dress out of someone's air tight vault. At least it would of been on Point) I would of been called Scarlet all night. "After all, tomorrow is another day!" 💃🏾
The colours might be the worst thing of them all... With the plastic flower on the chest that looked so cheap. The chocker did not match with anything else on the look.. rather than the hair. Just the shillouete is there. 👍
@@i.f.llamas3922 i agree completely the dress was not flattering at all

Bad Bunny’s silhouette was pure Gibson Girl.
They didn't understand the theme last year either. Idk why they choose to be so uncreative and derivative on the one huge event where they can wear incredibly intricate outfits. Personally I would have shown up in an authentic Edwardian gown! With all the accessories authentic and hair style too. THAT would have been fantastic for this year or last year. Authentic 1890s gowns are BEAUTIFUL as well! Or go authentic late 1950s. I just feel like the Met Gala is wasted on them. America has had SO MANY incredibly mind blowing beautiful styles of fashion through out it's history. Not a single person showed up in ANY of it
I was thinking about that too! With their budget they could've definitely get an original piece and then make alterations to better fit themselves.
