    • I would say "I just like things clean"...but the truth is I'm extremely self-conscious and suffer from imposter syndrome, which makes me believe everything is going to end at any moment, forcing me into acting like a guest in my own shop and keeping me from ever putting stakes down and feeling like I truly belong. ...that and the cinderblock is a pain to drill into.

    • As someone who needs to understand the context of the project especially when it's outside of my expertise, narration that is well done, engaging, and to the point is something I don't mind at all. And though making a second video without the narration requires more time out of your day, is a good way to get more views and make more people happy. Don't let the trolls pull you down.

    • I agree, I watch a lot of woodworking video’s, some from other countries that don’t speak English and although the work is great, you’re wondering what is the build until the music starts playing at the end!

    • @@Foureyes.Furniture it would have to be world class special to be worth watching the eversame cuts and sanding and finishing without any explanation of what idea sits behind "the build". Even though explaining the same step every time feels probably repetetive to both maker and consumer, every video is somebody's first woodmaking video and every video is somebody's 5,000th watch. There needs to be some sort of balance, at least giving hints about the design and steps and how this project is connected to what you do is essential to make thrilling content. Else you can just watch one of these channels showing 10 hours of trainrides without comment or a campfire or whatever. Woodworking isn't that zen ;)

Rather the opposite, actually. I love your humor, and every comment I‘ve read so far here said about the same thing. You‘ll always find haters under every video of every big creator, no matter what kind of content you make. What’s important is that for you, the amount of people who love your stuff is disproportionately greater than the amount of haters. I‘m not against taking criticism to heart, that’s a good thing. But if they’re rude and hateful about it, they don’t deserve your attention. And if they want you to change anything, they can say that in a nice way.

Given your talent I would say you are on the spectrum, super high functioning and willing to share your entire knowledge catalogue for nothing. No offense meant if you aren’t, but we tend to recognize the trait in each other.

    • If it's a spectrum...I guess we're all on it somewhere right? JK. Appreicate the support...and I think most people like the talking. It's just an (ironically) vocal minority.

    • @@Foureyes.Furnitureusing the term spectrum is a way of describing everyone, however the spectrum is a polite way of describing those of us that aren’t neurotypical. I only discovered this when I was 45, nothing changed it just helped me understand why I thought differently from others. Anyway, I love your furniture, love the videos, incredible content.

    • Hi, I like to weigh in on this, I've Asperger's as well. The philosophical musings of our friend show to me he embraces the atypical. In that he has an overlap with what is reckognized by most as autistic behaviour. Also the monomanical pursuit of these project could define autistic behaviour, but, our woordworking friend shows also a lot of non-autistic trades. But where the atypical overlap shows? Mainly in the musings? Yeah... it's almost asmr! So, a relaxing bonus on top of the nice projects. Still... having said all this, can we have a non-slab project, the next time? A chair maybe?

      @theobolt250@theobolt250 Жыл бұрын
    • And the autism spectrum is limited. There's a bottom limit. So, most people are NOT on it! (which gives it a nice sheen of exclusiveness. 😁)

    • I find it really interesting that there is something inherent to these videos that appeals to those of us that are atypical. I have ADHD and ASD and there is nothing better for me to work to than Chris presenting a Four Eyes video. Other woodworking videos with similar presentation help as well, but they haven't managed to get the self deprecating humor down as well as Chris and don't feature any where near enough AJ1 styled push blocks!

  • I gotta say, I super love the way you talk about your project and take us through the journey. I'm not a particularly good woodworker myself, but I always feel kind of involved and less intimidated by your craftsmanship. Like you said, if you just watch someone build something beautiful they just seem like they know everything, but you talk about your mistakes, your worries and such, that it really becomes very personal and mirrors my thoughts I have in my projects all the time...

  • For what it's worth, I appreciate the talking. The self-deprecating humor, explanations of what is happening (or just happened), and details are great. I also absolutely love videos where it's just the sound of woodworking, and there are many channels for that, and now 1 more thanks to you. I kinda wish those other channels would do this too and make a talking version to explain what's going on. I'm sure it's twice the work to keep both running, but thanks for doing it.

  • Beautiful table, the proportions look perfect. I enjoy your narration style. It's not a matter of quantity but rather your self deprecating humor, skillful woodworking, and well articulated, concise advice. I was a member of a woodworkers club for about 15 years, most evenings and weekends. During that time I learned a lot including: that it was much harder than I expected; fixing mistakes was part of most projects, buy more wood than you think you will need, and, contrary to what everyone says, sanding can be fun. I would have never have persisted and progressed if I hadn't joined the club and taken the many courses offered. It was a Woodcraft store and club in Maryland. The shop was very well equipped and had a full time staff member who was available to provide advice and help. All new members had to be checked out before they were allowed to use each piece of equipment. The best part of working in the club was that there were some excellent woodworkers who were always happy to help if you had questions or needed help. They also made some beautiful projects. So there was always a friendly competition get better. In Maryland there was a chain of Opticians named "For Eyes." Back to your question about the level of detail in your narration. I enjoy your explanations of what and why you are doing that way. I am always interested in learning new (and new to me) techniques. It's amazing how many there are. Or to mis-quote Homer Simpson; "Who Would Have Thought How Complicated Nuclear Power (woodworking) Could Be." P.S, like most people I hated sanding when I first started. But after many projects I learned how to sand properly and began to enjoy it. I learned that even end grain can finished without splotching if it sanded properly. Besides, sanding meant the project was past the stage where the big cutting mistakes were made. I would just go into my Zen sanding trance and think about my next project. After a few years I simplified my finishing process and settled on using a General Finishes wiping varnish or Watco Danish oil. Most projects were selected curly maple or cherry so I didn't want to hide the grain. Keep up the good work!
