Omega Mart appears to be just a regular supermarket run by a corporation known as DramCorp. But it's story goes far deeper than that. I sit down with Vince Kadlubek, Founder of an art installation team known as Meow Wolf. They have been breaking the norm of the art industry this past decade with incredibly immersive storytelling seeped into their products such as, House Of Eternal Return & Omega Mart.
Follow me down one of the most exciting rabbit holes I've possibly ever come across on this channel.
Omega Mart appreciates you.

I was not expecting the history of an art collective making goofy, mysterious attractions for people to actually walk around in, with the help of George R. R. Martin and 2,000 schoolchildren. They made an entire alternate reality PLAYGROUND. I love this.

My girl had absolutely no observational skills considering we had to pay to get in and Area 15 is not the kind of place a normal person would expect to find a supermarket in. Still, she had no idea what was going on. So imagine her surprise when she crawls through a hole in the back of a tent, only to emerge in a freaking fever dream. • Thanks for this. It reminds me of the time I started a "band" in 2007 because it was fun and a great way to spend time with friends and escape a stressful job. The band never existed and never made any music, but we had a manifesto and an entangled history. A social experiment and a whisper farm. And it exploded into all sorts of crazy on MySpace and we got threatened by local mafia club owner. From the pre -launch guerrilla graffiti poster campaign, "collabs" with artists/ musos/filmagraphers/ designers, secret "exclusive" gigs, secured gigs at city's most demanded venues.... It kinda a peaked out when a drunken stranger was hitting on me, humble bragging about how he'd managed to get into a secret gig to see his favourite underground band. I asked a few questions. He told me a story about Karen O and Julian Casablancas being in the group of 23 audience members the night before, and the two key bands members Pussy Thomas and Miss Meow Mew. Everyone joining in to adapt a few of the songs. Garage percussion with found object instruments. It was all filmed on a Super 8 camera but no-one could figure out where to get it processed. He told me about Miss Meow... he was a result of creative energy flowing in strange unexpected ways. He believed, and for a moment I considered telling him, challenging him, pulling the Polaroids out of my handbag. But I didn't. It was too pure and punk rock. He had just gotten a Meow tattoo, and it was perfection. The band spilt up a week later; creative differences and an attempted homicide. The Vacuous Whores may come back if Pussy and Meow are in the same city again, who knows.

If I don't think we do, I'll say it, but I'll still offer to go and look to see if we do. When I'm back there, I'll go through the four or so spaces that the product might actually be and give it a good look through. If I come back empty handed - and sometimes I do - it's because we just genuinely don't have the item in stock at the moment. :C Which sucks, especially because of how prevalent stocking issues have been since crown germ hit.

It makes me so happy to see that independent artists are still able to produce pure art like this to this scale and be successful with it. There’s so many stories and works online that are art pieces on their own and that would flourish even more with an opportunity to take things to a bigger scale, but it always seems a little hopeless when you see the repetitive stuff being produced by triple A companies or Hollywood. We were there for SIX WHOLE HOURS. The experience and visuals were transformative. The discoveries are so satisfying. The story is pretty fun but also weird and kinda creepy and super mysterious. I've heard of people not even having a clue that there is a story and thinking there's nowhere else to go other than the supermarkets. Most people don't find out the majority of its secrets or how it actually functions. I feel like there's still more I need to know. We had to leave only bc we were physically worn out. I went in having done no previous research intentionally, so I could authentically investigate and learn the story. All of the clues and details and range from intentional and direct to obscure and well concealed. The layout allows for unbridled exploration in a way that can be as structured as you would like it to be. For those who are less interested in the story and more interested in the ambiance are given ample opportunity to enjoy while not sacrificing the effect of the installation. The staff only adds to it all, giving their unique perspectives and back stories. I could go on for ages about Omega Mart and how phenomenal of an immersive experience it was, and if you were on the fence about going, this is your sign to just go. • The idea that omega mart as an evolving instillation with a story that people can potentially unlock further aspects of just appeals to me so much on that D&D storyteller world builder DM way. The setting exists but it requires players to make it come alive and set it in motion. Meow Wolf’s idea here is absolutely brilliant in so many ways it combines so many elements of ARG with the LARPing aspects of role playing in a murder mystery dinner party or in an escape room. With the idea of a paranormal supermarket inspired art instillation with a parallel reality themed touch museum. Its basically an arg that takes the form of a physical location. Its so hard to define because on a way this is in itself an entirely new art form. It’s an art instillation but it’s not just that. Trying to Define it is like trying to explain a modern video game to someone in the 1700’s the best you can do is try and relate it to paintings, live theatre, and music.

  • I love that if you look up Omega Mart on google it lists it as an actual grocery store. But I’m really glad that this video didn’t try and explain the story of Omega Mart in depth. I think it’s best that people actually visit the exhibit and experience it for themselves.
