Fishing with Lures for Beginners - When to Use (Underwater Fishing Lures)
Fishing lures for beginners...Fishing lures come in all shapes and sizes, and they can catch anything from bluegills to bass to muskies. Knowing when to throw a certain type of fishing lure can help you catch more fish and have a better time learning how to fish. We run through various lures including spinnerbaits, inline spinners, crankbaits, chatterbaits, swimbaits, topwater baits like Whopper Ploppers and frogs, and spoons.
I would highly suggest these items below as a great starter fishing setup. This rod and reel are not super cheap, but they will serve a person well for many years. A cheap rod and reel won't last all that long and eventually, you'll get a chance to use a nice rod and reel and realize that you were at a disadvantage with the cheap combo. It's worth the investment in a decent rod and reel.
Ugly Stik carbon spinning rod - medium light amzn.to/453HR9x
Diawa Regal LT 1000 amzn.to/455sw8f
Berkley Trilene XL monofilament line (6-8lb) amzn.to/3DBKjbs
Basic crankbait (Berkley Flicker Shad or similar) amzn.to/3DAB1fP
Small spinnerbait - Strike King Mini or similar amzn.to/3OzUwvv
Large spinnerbait - shad or bluegill pattern is usually best amzn.to/453Iikb
Small swimbait - Mimic Minnow or similar amzn.to/3qcQpft
Topwater frog - a small size and a large size amzn.to/3QjGcIL
Inline spinner - Rooster Tail or Mepps Aglia are my favorites amzn.to/3OcSqQL
Spoon - Little Cleo 1/4 - 1/2oz amzn.to/3QiN0X3
Z-man original chatterbait amzn.to/3YgbthR

This video is the gold standard of KZhead video. So informative. Been trying to figure out by myself without a dad or older person to reach me for years. Wish I had seen your video years ago.
Thank you - I really appreciate the comment.
I can be your dad ... For your mom
@@FishingwithNat I'm a bit new to fishing but just wondering does one use bait with this or are they use on there own
@@dragonknightn7n796 All of these lures are generally used on their own without bait.
@@FishingwithNatim new to fishing i fish for pike any lures recommended?
For anyone new to fishing ready to drop serious money on tackle, this is the video I would have them watch first. Awesome.
Thanks - I hope it's a helpful video for those who inherit a tackle box of lures or those who are looking to buy a few good lures for their local conditions.
I had to start over / I donated old gear to a nearest second hand store/ and I started fresh after watching Nat's video , like attending a crushing course you know?
@@gregory3108 I donated some old gear to a kids' camp, but I also have a bunch of old gear that I hang on to in case my kids or their friends want to go fishing. Nice to be able to give them a setup that I'm not attached to. I still let them use good lures as long as I don't think they'll cast into a treetop on their first cast. :)
well yes, I figured it out last year...disposed all old crappy fishing gear and started with all new one, save yourself a quite bit stress or disappointments while outdoors...something with hunting , you will not need a two barrel shotgun for a deer?
@@gregory3108 Not unless you want your deer to be in 10 pieces!
I've recently gotten into fishing, and all ive ever known was "cast a lure and hope for the best." This is really informative, concise, to the point, and has great visual examples as well. I don't think you could have made this video any better. Thanks!
Thanks - I really appreciate the comment!
Thank you! Many of the lure selection for beginners videos just TALK, no visual examples expecting that we already know what a "chatter bait" looks like. You rock! Great visual examples of each
That's exactly why I made this video. Thanks for the comment.
Its a fair point. But a fair counterpoint would be that you're watching this on the internet, you can google things you dont know and pause the video.
I don’t usually comment under videos, but I have to say, I haven’t fished since I was a kid; and now I am 30. This video was very helpful to me as I just got my fishing license and have no idea what I am doing anymore. Thank you for the concise well explained information. Will be sharing to my business partner before we go fishing 😊
I'm glad you left a comment - thank you for the feedback.
Throw what u want something will bite it if it's hungry or irritated enough
@@clintlansdell9505 Sometimes a fish will bite anything. Other times, they are more picky.

I came to say the same thing but the last time i fished i was 16, I'm 26 now. I've watched so many of this guys videos because he often lays out the facts and let's you decide. He says what he likes, says other things that work, and doesn't really shit on anything unless it's something universally shitted on like straight snap swivels.

So I’m new to fishing and went to the tackle shop and basically just bought a lot of stuff I thought is going to look tasty to the fish and some friends gave me a lot of their lures. Thanks a lot for this video, it’s really helpful that you show which fish is likely to bite on which lure and showing actual footage of you using it, when and where. All I’ve seen so far on KZhead was just Product placement and not really helpful for beginners. Glad there’s still quality content out here!
There's a lot of product placement out there. I find it to be annoying and not very helpful.
I’m an EXTREMELY visual learner and this was WUITE helpful. Thank you for making it this way
I am very much a visual learner too, so I tend to teach the same way. Thanks for the feedback - it's good to hear that you enjoyed the format.
Bro thank you for being concise. Too many fishing KZheadrs are too long winded.
That's my style. I totally agree with you. Thanks for the comment.
Not too concise, forgot to mention a loop knot or swivel is needed for hard bodied lures
Thank you! I grew up fishing with live bait only (worms/bobber) in WI. But now that I live in Texas, I want to expand to lures and fake bait (save $$), but I didn't know what to get or how to use it. I've been looking for 2 years on YT to find something simple like this. You explained the bait, showed how it works in the water, which fish preferred what kind and what ones to use in cloudy or high vegetation. Plus it was short and concise to keep the attention. Great video for newbies to lures.
Thank you for the feedback. I appreciate it. So glad to hear that it was helpful to you!
I’m just started fishing. I fish alone so this is definitely good for myself. Thanks !!! I’m definitely following you !!
Cool - thanks for the comment. Good luck!
I fished a good amount in college with a buddy who knew EVERYTHING. I am getting back into fishing again and this video was absolutely brilliant. Jogged my memory about a few things but gave so much new information for me. Fish on. 🤟
Awesome - glad to hear that. Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate it.
This is everything I have been trying to figure out. Bland tone after a while but it put the information into my brain, good work on thin 🤙
Thanks - I appreciate the feedback.
I've been fishing on and off for a year now with no real idea what I'm doing and getting by on luck alone. Getting more into it now and your videos are a great help!
That's great to hear. Thanks for the comment. Take a look at our video collection - lots of good stuff there that can help you out.
a yellow #3 Mepps spinner with fire tiger blade has been my go-to for bass and pike for about 20 years now. I fish it shallow, in weeds, pads, docks and reeds and nothing is better for early season bass and pike. So glad you led off with the best lure on the market!
The yellow Mepps Aglia is killer around here for pike, bass, musky...even big perch.
Started fishing again with my gf’s dad and this was a perfect explanation. Now I know what to use, how to use, and where to use so I don’t look like a rookie in front of her old man. Thanks 🤙
Glad you found it helpful! Good luck!
I’m so serious this is the most informational and easy to understand video I’ve ever seen better then what they played in school!!
Glad you enjoyed it! 🙂
Best video I've seen in a very long time about lures, the best part is the video of the lure in action.
Thanks - I appreciate the comments.
Thank you for these videos! I've hardly learn how to fish when I was younger. Hated fishing, but now in my 30s with 2 sons, one who always want to go fishing, I have to learn how to fish now. Just barely started.
Great! Welcome to the sport. I'm glad my videos have been helpful to you. Good luck!
Same here brother. Feel like I should have started sooner that way I’m teaching my son, not learning with him at the same time haha
Super helpful, without a lot of filler. Thank you!
Thanks for the feedback and I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
One time i forgot my lures, so i somehow caught a small fish with a chewing gum formed like a worm 😂
That's awesome. I had that happen once so I rolled up a part of a leaf and put that on a hook. It worked to catch me a few bluegills and perch. Sometimes a fish is curious enough to taste just about anything.
No insects or worms nearby?
I'm getting "back into" fishing after about 30 years (havent been since i was about 8) and this is straight forward. Thank you for the great info.

i was surprised kinda how well the berkely shad swimbaits worked for me. my lake is really shallow 14ft at its deepends and has thiiick vegetation soft easy to work with vegetation, but the pike and bass cant resist them, works almost as good as a topwater :) and they are affordable
What size bait were you using?
The best vid I've seen in my 69 yrs of life. Your expertise and easy to understand AND visual lure swim techniques in n9rmal and slow mow is 10/10. In australian outback here, i fish in coffee coloured water for golden perch and inline spinners are all that work for me. I'm Like and subbin so i can brain drain any inline spinner info. Cheers from outback QLD AUSTRALIA.

Inline spinner ( rooster tails, martin panther and bluefoxes ) are the best fish locator for me . I have caught everything from catfish , crappie, salmon , walleye, bass and much more on them . Over 50 years of fishing so far in my life and still loving it . I go an average of 3 times a week year round .

Topwater hits are mythical to me at this point. I've had one topwater bite ever, in about 15 years of bass fishing haha. I don't know what the deal is.
Frogs are super effective for me in heavy vegetation for bass, pike, bowfin, and musky. Give that a shot sometime! Other topwaters like Whopper Ploppers are more hit-and-miss.
I'm yet to catch a murray cod off the surface but everyone else gets boofed all the time
I freaking love top water bites. It’s so addicting and truly a mythical experience lol. But geez do they only hit maybe once or- if your lucky enough- twice or more an hour. Frogs are what I use and I typically don’t use anything else because I’m too stubborn trying to get top water bites ha
@@Radbiker33357 Once in a while you can find that magical spot where every other cast with a frog results in an explosion. I'll be out froggin' next week and hope to find one of those spots!
@Ryanoceros06 I've been fishing for years and seldom land a fish on a topwater. But, when I have it's a blast. A old school Jitterbug is my go-to. The original Arbogast not the cheap China imitations.
Thank you I am just about to go fishing with my dad this weekend and got a new tackle box bc my old one was overflowing with lewers I also needed to know what the lewers were called thank you.

I use to turn lures in the wood shop. Most people thought was so pretty and too nice to fish with.
I have several lures that are so beautiful, I've never used them. I actually bought them with the intent of hanging them on my wall.
1) What fish (panfish, bass, pike?) - this will determine size of lures: which will determine test of your tackle system. 2) Depth and vegetation will determine if your lure will be floating, sinking or suspending. 3) Choose a quality producer. Choose the appropriate lure by construction that you LIKE and BELIEVE IN. Start with 3 basic colors: light, colorful and dark 4) Work that lure until you have figured out it's play. Do not start by buying bunch of random lures, it's money wasted. For instance: I fish for pike in shallow lagoon lakes with semi-clear water with brown tint. For this instance I choose suspending lipless jerkbaits (buster jerk) that work 0.2-1.0m deep, unweighted large silicon, poppers, mice, ducks and frogs as topwater lures. Size of lures is medium (120mm) to large (bigbait), consequently I use heavy baitcaster, thick braid, thick fluro leader and main colors for lures are yellow-orange-red thru gold to brown to black and silver-beige for clear days.
Good tips. Thanks for the comment.
This is a very good commentary, we are the sole victims of marketing ☝️far too often buying new toys and being lured (hooked😅) to invest more and more in fishing gear ...while by end of the day you should be able to figure out what exactly you need? Or what to keep in your tackle box (essential) again what Nat is suggesting to us -is just a sobering concept: try and buy only this what may work at given aquatic (fishing) area and perhaps stick to your shoe laces? it may save you not only money 💰 but disappointing moments....
Endless combination, braid line has its own advantages not recommended for winter / ice / fishing; but what we have in our arsenal (fishing rods , lures etc.. ) gives you a tool to finish the job? OutSmarting a given fish specie is our basic goal?
Great video! I’m teaching a 4 h class tomorrow and this info will help!
