“Dancing On Air” - The making of Barbie™ in the 12 Dancing Princesses

“Go behind-the-scenes with a real-life ballerina to see how she brought to life the princesses’ ballet choreography!” - Mattel 2006
In this documentary we are introduced to principal dancer with the NYC Ballet, Maria Kowroski, who up until 2006 had been the dancer for Barbie®. We get to see her everyday life, working as a professional dancer to how she trains for her performances. We are also shown to how the film was made using motion-capture sensors. This is one of my favorite documentaries of Maria. She’s my personal hero! 💖

I never knew that they had gotten a real life ballerina and choreography for the ballet in the barbie movies! And hearing the magnificent music made me so nostalgic! This video was truly so amazing and insightful to watch, thank you so much for posting it!! I also wanted to ask if there are any other videos like this made for the other two barbie ballet movies? And if so if you could also post them I would so love to watch them! Thanks again!

I think it's bc Barbie is seen as a delicate girl or something, or focused on the scolding of being a Barbie doll, idk. I like the original movies. I'd like for them to bring back that elegances while showing how string she really is.

The animation, design, and general artistry that went into them is still obvious 20 years later and I love that-- nothing was half-assed, and they still hold up today because of it. Even as an adult, I still like watching them. I really wish they would remake or adapt some of these for a large theatrical release or a stage musical. With just a few tweaks and a bigger budget, I think they could really rake in some money.

And I honestly have to say those three ( Barbie Swan Lake, Barbie Nutcracker, and Barbie twelve dancing princesses) are my favorite among the barbie movies! • I'm currently on the verge of my last week in second term as a third year design student, I'm feeling incredibly burnt out and stressed, and I've reached a point where I'm doubting if this is really what I want to do, but this video has inspired me to give it that final push, that last shove of fullhearted motivation. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for this video.

  • I need to share something, forgive me. I started ballet last year. My dream has always been to dance, not as a professional, just as the sensitive person I am. Things always seemed difficult and I couldn't start at a young age. Although, I tried my best to keep myself in shape even if I thought I'd never accomplish it (so many times). But you never know who would you meet, the right person that persuades you to try harder than ever and make it real. None of my friends knew I wanted to do ballet, neither my parents for years. Just my boyfriend, who bought my first pair of flat shoes five years ago (and those that I keep). I started doing ballet last year and I never thought I had to work so hard. But when the music turns on and the lights turn off, I can feel every single note in my heart. Sometimes I just want to cry when I realize that I'm doing exactly what I always wanted to. .I hope you all find what you deserve, what really makes you happy.

    • That was absolutely beautiful! I’m a ballet dancer myself so this definitely hits home! I really resonate with the feeling of being swept up but the music and the emotion. It’s a beautiful thing. I’m very happy you found something your passionate about!

    • My Doll Cabinet When I was little, I started taking ballet classes too, but then I was bumping into other dancers, which I didn’t mean to. Then, the teacher fired me and I never took dance lessons again ever since! About 20 - 21 years later, I kept on practicing my ballet moves, by watching and hearing the music from the Barbie ballet movies. My balance isn’t always right, but I’m trying! And my ballet moves are getting more and more graceful! Hopefully, I’ll be a prima ballerina! Someday!
