A wise man once said drugs don't make life better, they just make life more interesting. And once you try drugs, your interesting life becomes less interesting unless you're on the drug. "Getting high on life" used to be a good thing until you try drugs and ruin your life. If my comment keeps at least ONE person from getting addicted to drugs, the world will be a better place.

Props to you for navigating the 125th and Lexington area at night. I grew up in that neighborhood and we used to call that area from 125th down to about 122 and Lex, "Thriller." You had to be vigilant and generally not walk alone, if you could help it, because the addicts and the dealers were always out in full force. Even though NYC is a different place than it was in the 80s/90s, that strip hasn't seemed to change much.

I worked overnights in Harlem Hospital last year and would sometimes have to walk to work at night from West Harlem to East when the subway was out of order--I'm a nurse in my 40s from upstate NY. Never had any problems. The news makes it seem much worse than it is. Mind your business, no one bothers you. Probably some of those people standing on the streets are waiting for public transportation...the city bus to get to a job or home. You had to be vigilant and generally not walk alone, if you could help it, because the addicts and the dealers were always out in full force. Even though NYC is a different place than it was in the 80s/90s, that strip hasn't seemed to change much.
125th and Lex is still the worst place in Manhattan and one of the worst spots in NYC in general.
It's a bit quieter overall these days, mainly because many of the stores and the McDonalds closed down, so a lot of the people who used to hang out there are over on 125th & Lenox now. I've only lived in East Harlem for 19 years, but long enough to see it go through a few changes.

There are alot more hoods that make this place look affluent. You should see hoods in Philadelphia and Baltimore
NYC hoods are more tame than some other cities in the US - contrary to what the media says. Not to say they are not sketchy, but NYers hold their own.
They may not look like much but they're safer than hoods in most of the Midwest and a lot of the East, and if you watch interviews you'll see what I mean that New York hood folks just seem the smartest and most likely to leave their circumstances of anywhere I've seen in the US
