"The Cranberries - Zombie" is a powerful song with a compelling message and an iconic music video to match.
The song, released in 1994 by the Irish rock band The Cranberries, addresses the violence and political unrest in Northern Ireland during the Troubles. Written by the band's lead singer Dolores O'Riordan, "Zombie" is a protest song that expresses frustration and sorrow over the loss of innocent lives due to the conflict. The lyrics vividly depict the devastating impact of violence, with references to bombings and the haunting refrain "What's in your head, in your head, zombie?"
Accompanied by raw and emotional vocals from O'Riordan, the song's driving rhythm and intense guitar riffs create a sense of urgency and defiance, capturing the tumultuous atmosphere of the time.
The music video for "Zombie" complements the song's message with striking imagery. Directed by Samuel Bayer, the video features black and white footage of the band performing interspersed with scenes of conflict and destruction, including footage of a British soldier and a child holding a toy gun. The juxtaposition of the band's impassioned performance with images of violence and tragedy enhances the song's impact and reinforces its themes of sorrow and defiance.
Overall, "The Cranberries - Zombie" is a poignant and powerful song that continues to resonate with audiences for its emotional depth, social commentary, and memorable musicality.

  • As you probably know, Ireland had been fighting for its independence from England for decades. In March of 1993, a bomb was detonated in the town of Warrington, England, that had been left in a trash receptacle on one of the city’s streets, resulting in the death of a 3-year old and a 12-year old child. This tragic incident, combined with the decades-long ongoing conflict between England and Ireland (Delores O’Riordan’s native country), inspired her to write “Zombie”. If memory serves, she died in 2018 as a result of a drowning accident. One of the most unique and best vocalists ever. RIP Delores O’Riordan 🕊️🕊️😇🙏Peace my brother ✌🏾

    • Your first sentence is misleading. The Republic of Ireland (which is most of the island of Ireland) has been fully independent from England for a very long time. The problem is Northern Ireland. Even then, about half of the population of N.I. are loyal to England. The fight was really the terrorist war waged by the IRA. The Cranberries, being from the Republic, are basically just spectators of the fighting. It isn't their war. They don't take sides in the song.

  • As an Australian with Irish and English heritage, we always knew about the troubles. We grew up seeing it on the news all the time and I remember when two Australian men were shot in Amsterdam by the IRA in front of their wives in the 80’s as they had been mistaken for off duty British soldiers. Most people lost any sympathy with the IRA when they just indiscriminately planted bombs and killed innocents. It was truly disgusting.

    • Well I don’t know about that,it was written about an IRA car bomb in Warrington,England that killed two schoolchildren….here’s what Delores said about why she wrote the song. “There were a lot of bombs going off in London and I remember this one time a child was killed when a bomb was put in a rubbish bin -- that's why there's that line in the song, 'A child is slowly taken,'" O'Riordan told Songwriting Magazine. "We were on a tour bus and I was near the location where it happened, so it really struck me hard - I was quite young, but I remember being devastated about the innocent children being pulled into that kind of thing. So I suppose that's why I was saying, 'It's not me' - that even though I'm Irish it wasn't me, I didn't do it. Because being Irish, it was quite hard, especially in the UK when there was so much tension." She told Vox magazine in 1994 that the song was written in part as a mechanism to grapple with her identity as an Irish citizen that did not support the actions of the IRA. "The IRA are not me. I'm not the IRA. The Cranberries are not the IRA. My family are not. ... When it says in the song, 'It's not me, it's not my family,' that's what I'm saying. It's not Ireland".
