Esther and the King - Two decades before she would gain fame and some fortune as Alexis Carrington on Dynasty (1981), Dame Joan Collins starred as Esther in this melodramatic, routine Biblical story. The setting is Persia in the fourth century B.C., as Esther comes to the attention of the recently widowed King Ahasuerus. The King has been trying to stifle and defeat the campaign of hatred fomented against the Jews by his evil minister Haman (Sergio Fantoni). Before the King can pair off with Esther and defeat the villainous Haman, there are several intervening adventures and an additional, attractive woman who competes for attention.

None of this hardly resembles the true Biblical story. Really too too Hollywood with much rebellion from Esther. She was courageous. Not rebellious. She also never cheated. She was beautiful, courageous and loyal.

So true. Mordecai is an amazing man. I'm still learning about the Old Testament and my favorite stories are found in it. God's power is known and felt throughout.
While I appreciate creative license, the authentic biblical account, in my opinion, is much more enthralling. Having Esther with someone/or a betrothed, prior to meeting the king, cheats the storyline a bit. Not necessary.

The only person who still alive in this movie is Joan Collins. She is now 90. Anybody else involved with the making of this movie is dead. So nobody is listening. Back then this is how movies were made. It's also about the money invested in these movies. In today's world, if this movie was being made, i'm sure that they would have a closer union with the bible and the storyline.

Nice film, but many characters in this film are not telled after Holy Bible. Vashti was not adulterous, she was desrespecting the king and was banished. Esther was not engaged to another man before the marriage. Haman was assigned to chief minister after the banishment of Vashti. Haman was personally a solid husband and family father. He didn't have an adulterous relationship to Vashti or others. Haman or other men have no access to the women's palace. No concubines of the king would have been given to soldiers. Mordecai was not Minister but a guard of the main door. After the revealing of Esther he became chief minister.
The storyline of politics is told differently to the book Esther.
Reading some comments tells me that people would rather be entertained even with fabrications, Truly life is depicted as a Comedy of fools.
I would respectfully argue that the king was the one who disrespected Vashti, he ordered her to basically parade herself before a bunch of drunk and leering partygoers. He should have been the one to take her out of such situations, not place her in them. He was going to use her as a display and that is not respectful as she is a human not a vase or a showhorse.

Ha, the sculptures from that era show the men were not so clean cut. They had long and curly hair and beards. The palaces had very tall columns and high ceilings. Also, I don’t think Zoroastrians had multiple gods. They believed in Anura Mazda. Did Esther really betrayed the man she loved and supposed to marry? That doesn’t sound too good. As much as I enjoyed watching good looking men in short skirts, sculptures and statues show men wore long clothing back then.
