  • The whole discussion on penalties is sad for one fact, it hides the fact that Southgate lost the game for England way before it went to penalties

    • Yes. They caught Italy cold and got the early goal. Credit for that, but Donnarumma never had to make another save for 118 minutes. After the first 15 or 20 minutes Italy dominated the game. Not to mention in the final Italy was left without Zaniolo and Spinazzola, Chiesa going out and Jorginho almost going out, and despite lots of injuries Italy managed its men and kept attacking.

Why? They weren't composed or confident in THAT exact moment because they weren't having a good game. To minimize this risk, the penalty takers must be chosen based on in-game performance. You choose the players who performed the best in 90 minutes of the game. For instance, Maguire, a defender, scored his pen. Why? He was confident and had a good performance in 120 min. Grealish and Shaw were 2 others who were confident in front of goal during the final and should've taken pens.

  • Nedum & Steve got it wrong. Statistics give empirical evidence: players who enter to take a pen at the 120, these two, like Zaza for Italy in 2016, Carragher in 2006, all missed. The same reason why an otherwise excellent Maguire terribly mispasses to Pickford (to give a corner) in the 1st min or why Di Lorenzo missed Shaw's run on the 2nd. It's the nerves and pressure of starting a big game, over time you shake it off as you get more and more involved. As you walk to the spot from the middle, your heart beats faster and your stomach cramps, while most others on the pitch had the benefit of going through that 120 mins earlier

    @ricci1999@ricci19992 жыл бұрын
    • I agree with you. Plus, Nedum said that sometimes substituted players (in normal game time) score with their first touch. The thing is they don't have a high expectation at that time to score, so if they score, that's great (less pressure). However, the players that are substituted at the last minute of extra time definitely has to be for the penalty shootout, this time they have higher expectations to have to score (really high pressure) Plus, Southgate was taking a risk there. What if the ball wasn't kicked out, they wouldn't even have got subbed in

But of course the people picked to take a penalty in a shoot-out have the pressure by their team and the manager that they ARE EXPECTED TO SCORE. Add to that the expectations of the home crowd and the whole nation watching and it pure madness to have them come in basically cold to take just 1 penalty. And to defend the decision to let them wait to the 120th minute is just silly. Southgate wasn't forced to pick Walker and Henderson as the guys having to come off. He could have picked Grealish and Sterling as neither of them were among the 5 penalty takers that Southgate had decided on. One international title in 100 years (and we won't mention how that was gained...) doesn't make it a national football powerhouse. At best second tier - wins do the talking, not what ifs. If they faced the football world with a little more humility they probably would fare better than they have so far and be a little more "tolerable". Club football (with all the foreign talent that fodders it) does not count in this context.

  • Except for Jorghino’s miss, I called every single one by looking at the players eyes. Everyone who missed was extremely nervous and looked fearful, everyone who scored looked confident with Jorginho being the outlier, although he also didn’t look too confident. Anyway, if I can see that on the TV, Southgate should’ve seen it 10 times better. And I agree that the young players should’ve gone first. And I also agree that subbing in a player for the exclusive reason to score that one penalty in the final is madness. That just increases the pressure many folds. Rashford and Sancho didn’t have the opportunity to make a difference in the 120 minutes before, so they understood that this one shot was what they would be judged by, in a final no less. One can only imagine what that does to the mind of a young player like this. An experienced player who has seen it all may be better equipped to deal with this pressure, though it would have been tough even for him.

Gigi almost caught Kanes penalty, and if Kane missed, he would have been critisized for his whole life. Penalties are tough, anybody can miss, Messi misses, Ronaldo misses. Some you win, some you lose. Italy was the better team. England had very very few 'dangerous' chances to score, they only did once. These fools may critisize Southgate, but ignore the fact that he lead them to a final after 1966. Pure bs english media.

  • That was exactly the point. Saka should have gone first or second so, in case he missed or his shot got saved, there would have been other chances to put the shootout back on track. As Italian who remembers Roberto Baggio missing his penalty at the 94 world cup final, I very well know the consequences of that mistake. Roberto Baggio's career got stumped and his reputation as a penalty taker was in tatters. He ended up playing for mid-ladder teams and not being capped again for the national team in spite of his great results at team level with those mediocre squads. I really feel for Saka and I hope that he can play for a great team in the future. Pedri and Saka were the youngsters who caused a lot of problems to our backline. That's an accomplishment in itself.

  • I think the contentious points are: 1) Why did Southgate not send in players who could help England go for the win earlier? Sending in Rashford and Sancho just for penalties at the 120th minute indicates he had no interest in sending them on to go for the win. Why would he rather want to take it to penalties in the first place, given he had the players on the bench to really take it to the Italians? If he's playing just to not lose, is that the approach England want to maintain? 2) Why was Saka taking the 5th penalty when it's very likely the 5th penalty is gonna be the decider? Did Southgate think it's a good idea to leave a potential decider penalty to a youngster who hasn't taken a professional penalty before?

I train goalies so I need to warm my leg up so I can give the goalies the proper ball with the correct speed, location, and path to goal for them to make certain dives. For example, I want to make the ball skip just before it gets to the goalie for them to catch and fall forward and trap the ball to the ground or I chip the ball while the goalie backs up and tips it over the bar before it goes in the under the top bar.

Ask yourselves why were these three inexperienced players brought on at the end of the game? These 3 were sacrificed on the alter of diversity to prove a political point. We all know fine well the main talking point in football recently, hasn't been the game, it's been the kneeling stupidity. The TV and all of the MSM are desperate to ram their agenda down our throats....in this case it backfired spectacularly. More experienced players and others who wanted to take pens were ignored, ask yourself why? The MSM in the UK will not raise this subject as we now have censorship by omission, constantly.

Mount to me is more of a in behind kind of attacking mid that creates space for others to come in to. Works great when you have someone coming in behind but not good when your striker is also dropping deep. I think dropping mount deep though would ruin the space for Sterling and Saka to run into. That's why mount didn't receive the ball a lot in the final for some reason they had him playing outwide and cutting in instead of parking him behind the striker and making his movements from there

It was so obvious and Italy took 100% advantage of it, England basically played with 6 defenders in that final. There were not enough players in midfield to push the team forward because half of England's midfield was covering the defence. This worked very well against smaller teams and a poor Germany because Kane bossed them in midfield and basically ran the show and single handedly dragged the team forward. Italy knew they just needed to silence Kane and the others would fall. Italy had the quality to do so and the rest was history! Points to take home... against a quality team you cannot depend on your hermit crab defence to do the job! You will need to take your chances even if it means leaving yourself exposed! Sadly, I don't think Southgate will be willing to expose his hermit crab defence because the moment he does that and lose the media will slaughter him and his players! It is a horrible cycle.
