Aardvark (Anteater) Tries to Outrun Hyena in an Epic Chase!
An aardvark was out unusually early in the day, and a passing brown hyena thought it would be an easy catch, but he was wrong!
BOOK YOUR TRIP TO KRUGER: bit.ly/BookatKruger
It’s rare to see a brown hyena and even more so to see an aardvark in open plains during daylight, as aardvarks are nocturnal animals. That’s exactly what made this sighting extra spectacular!
Send in your wildlife video here, and earn money: www.latestsightings.com/partn...
This sighting was captured by Etienne, the Content Creator for the Greater Mabula Private Game Reserve (www.mabula.com, @MabulaGameLodge on Facebook & @Mabula_Game_Lodge_Official on Instagram), on the game reserve itself on an open plain known as the TPA plains, which is usually where the lodge hosts their champagne breakfasts underneath the 100-year old Wild Fig Tree.
“We had initially gone to the open plain to admire the iconic Wild Fig Tree is estimated to be over 100 years old. As we approached the plain, we got a call on the game drive radio that they had spotted an aardvark foraging on the open plain. It was already a magical sighting to witness a relaxed aardvark bumbling about the plain in the daytime. As we were admiring the aardvark, our guide-Andrew-noticed a brown hyena approaching the plains! To have a sighting of just witnessing these two incredibly rare and usually nocturnal animals during the day was an unforgettable moment.” They told LatestSightings.com
“We had never imagined that the sighting would get even more unbelievable with the interaction of the brown hyena trying to hunt the aardvark! At first, we thought that the brown hyena had spotted something else that it had begun to chase-perhaps an antelope or smaller animal like a scrub hare that we couldn’t see-it was only once the aardvark began running that we realized that the brown hyena was actually targeting the aardvark!”
“The feelings of pure astonishment, amazement, and disbelief were overwhelming! We had never imagined that an aardvark was able to run so quickly and to see it escape into its burrow was a moment of absolute awe. After the rush of adrenaline of the brown hyena nearly managing to get a grip on the aardvark a couple of times, it was simply breath-taking to watch the aardvark manage to escape into one of its burrows that the brown hyena could not access despite its initial efforts.”
“As if things could not get worse for the brown hyena, it was then chased by the herd of wildebeest that was watching it nearby! The sighting ended by the brown hyena dashing its way off of the plains, most likely in search of another meal. Though we waited for some time on the plain, the aardvark did not emerge out of its burrow.”
“This sighting of the interaction between the brown hyena and the aardvark was exceptionally rare. On the Greater Mabula Private Game Reserve, we are fortunate enough to spot brown hyena and aardvark on a regular basis, but never had we witnessed the two species interacting before! It’s amazing to now be able to firmly say that aardvark is one of the potential prey species of the brown hyenas in this area. It was also fascinating to see the predator-prey interaction between the brown hyena and wildebeest as the herd grouped together to chase the brown hyena off the plain.”
“It’s in these exceptionally rare sightings that you truly appreciate the complexity and beauty of wildlife and the bush, so we would really just advise anyone who is lucky enough to witness something like this to soak in everything that they are witnessing-and to of course have their camera always ready because you never know what you might see out on safari!”

I'm still shocked the aardvark knew exactly were it's burrow entrance was! so quick too but he got a bitten butt and no hyena has a soft bite
Well said.
Yup, aardvarks never stray far from their holes, all right. In fact, usually their territory has multiple holes all over the place so they can easily access any of them in case of something chasing them. And if they can't get into an existing hole in time, they just dig a new one from scratch at a suprising speed, and if the predator tries to bite it while it's doing this, SLASH! Those aardvark claws are no joke, their power ain't pretty.
I have a new found respect and admiration for aardvarks. How in the world did it manage to run circles around the hyena, find it's hole from at least 30-40 yards away, pull a David Blaine by disappearing into the hole, with teeth biting its ass? Bravo! And they're cute little critters

u glad hyena starved? u glad when u starve?
@@iNFaunTae: the more predatory an animal is, the happier I am that they starve. The planet needs less predatory relationships like those between carnivores and their prey, and more symbiotic mutually beneficial relationships, like that between fruit-bearing trees and plants and frugivorous seed-dispersing animals like humans. Humans have coevolved for tens of millions of years with fruit-bearing trees and plants in the tropical equatorial rainforest, a fully mutualistic symbiotic relationship in which they compete to make fruit as nutritious and delicious as possible in order to entice frugivorous animals like humans to eat them, and the unique interaction between their juvenizing biochemistry and our own neuroendocrine system has strengthened that bond immensely, yielding us our long lifespans as well as our large brains and subsequent higher cognitive faculties. www.abolitionist.com/reprogramming/index.html

_Aardvark._ Anteaters are very different critters.
Aardvark is in its own order (Tubulidentata). While anteater is groupped with sloths, armadillos etc. in Xenarthra order.
Aardvarks are different from anteaters man, they come from an antique mammal lineage, they are living fossils.

Hey 👋 my name is Trevor as well
Arthur has changed a lot from when I was a kid.
crazy! Arthur doesn't even have a long snout, the absolute give-away for an aardvark character, what a shame that they didn't bring knowledge of aardvarks through his character, a missed opportunity IMO, businesses and Hollywood should donate to wildlife charities of the wild animal that they use to make lots of money from...ie. rhinos, bears, gorillas, tigers.. used for tough tyres and camping goods etc. Hippos, crocodiles, lions, sharks and every single other animal, used for movies... most wildlife is now endangered, a lot of the big animals are, esp. the predators...we either like them and want to share our planet with our fellow Earthlings...or we don't/won't..
@AaronT Actually, only Buster looks like a rabbit. Muffy and Francine look more like humans than monkeys, Binky looks less like a bulldog and more like a deformed Goomba, Brain doesn't quite look like a bear, George the moose looks more like a goat with antlers, the list goes on. XD
@@NannupTiger Fun fact: In the very first Arthur books, Arthur did look more like an actual aardvark, complete with a long snout, but then they changed him into his design we all know and love to mock because it was hard to see his mouth with that snout in the way. Uhhh, didn't the artists realize that an aardvark's mouth is at the end of the snout and not behind it? These are aardvarks! Not elephants! XD

That hyena looked funny as hell...running with his hair flying around everywhere.
Aardvark, he be rolling deep. One for The Wildebeest Squad!
Imagine if an aardwolf chased down an aardvark... a tongue-twister 😆
There's usually associative feeding between the two however, rather than any chasing. Aardwolves, albeit burrowing animals, don't have claws strong enough to dig through termite mounds, so they often have to rely on aardvarks for that. "Aardvarks excavate extensive burrow systems for shelter, which are often refuges for a variety of other animals. They are able to break and penetrate the hard crusts of termite mounds and thereby facilitate the supplementary feeding of other species, like the aardwolf or ant-eating chat, which are not able to open such mounds. Old excavated mounds are also utilized by various species as hibernation or nesting location, which underlines the ecological importance of aardvarks." There are some reports regarding certain feliforms in mixed enclosures, and under the aardwolf section, there was this: zoorope.hu/en-mixed-exhibit-felidae-hyaenidae/ "In a nocturnal exhibit at Zoo Frankfurt the socialization of Aardwolves and Aardvarks was really successful for a long time. Aardwolves were the submissive species and sometimes showed threat behaviour, but no aggression. Mild stress was also present between the species due to the common use of the underground holes." Also, aardwolves are actually much lighter and smaller than aardvarks... Aardwolf: Length: 55-80cm (body)+ 20-30cm (tail) Shoulder height: 40-50 cm Weight: 7-10 kg (avg), Max: 15kg Aardvark: Length: 105-130cm (body)+ upto 70cm (tail) Shoulder Height:~60 cm Weight: 60-80 kg Girth: 100cm That's a lot of difference! :0
