The 20 year warranty is a thing of legend
lol that thing's probably more than 20 yrs. old so it probably won't matter.
Funny, since those stickers are illegal.
A concept i try to tell my dad all the time is that just because an electronic hasnt been used doesnt mean it still works. It could be still brand new in box but need immediate repair due to age.
like capacitors, and on the C64, the PLA IC, and many 386 and 486s have a nicd 3.6v battery that is prone to leaking. i got a new in box Soltek socket 478 board with capacitors already bloated and leaking.

Side notes: If you do find a random xbox in the back of the closet, when testing it, it is a good idea to plug the av cable in too. don't have to connect it to a tv just have it in the back. The xbox will throw a flashing green and orange ring light error if the av is not plugged in. People think the xbox is dead, but its fine just needs av of some kind so it can set the video output resolution on boot and will halt the system till it can. On v1.6 xbox the clock cap is the gold one up near the IDE port, not at the front like others, Yeah it can leak but we still got a few years. The caps you replaced are CPU filter caps and power conditioning caps. TBH I have not seen the power conditioning caps fail but I don't work on xboxs as much as I did back in the day. power conditioning caps is probs what killed this xbox, cant boot if the hole system doesn't have any power rails. CPU filter caps are weird, when thay fail and depending on how bad the xbox will still sorta work but DO NOT RUN THE XBOX WITHOUT THEM. When they are damaged you will find games will sometimes load the main menu but crash or get stuck when loading the first map, game overall is just really slow, when trying to do more complex things like a TSOP the homebrew will boot but then just fail to right or find the TSOP. If they are totally cooked or removed then the xbox will just get stuck in the boot splash or the system os screen. Yeah your dvd drive is probs just dirty / full of a lot of dust. Alright, till next time [skeletor running away]
Ok good to know
Man, I wish someone like you could help me recondition my Amiga (well, Amigas plural tbh!)
@@Kholaslittlespot1 hm? What needed?
Yeah the Xbox is the only system in my experience that freaks out when it comes to the video cable. If you try to unplug the av cable while it's on then it'll reset itself.

"Imagine being a retro electronic enthusiast and having a dust allergy" You just described me, dude. I've entered some really dusty rooms to scavenge for old piece of tech (usually 1980s audio equipment)
my allergies are flaring up just from thinking of that
iMac fix, PAIN!!
You are an outlet for my weird obsession for old technology
you should check out cathode ray dude as well if you're looking for more old tech content, he makes some of my favorite old tech videos
You're amazing I actually started fixing my electronics because of your content and learned a thing or two doing so, thank you!
I had the opposite happen 4 years ago at a Goodwill thrift store, they had an Xbox with an orange ring for $5, after dealing with a cashier who thought user info almost 15 years old would expire, turned out all the orange ring was, was a "No AV cord connected" error. A quick dusting, clock cap removal, drive cleaning, and mod chip later, it's still one of the cheapest consoles I ever got ($30 including the mod chip).
Samsung disc drives always tend to break the most when it came to the OG Xbox, 2nd being the Thomson drives. Finding replacement lasers for your disc drive is expensive as hell but they're out there. Looks like that drive is a Ver. A drive, it may need an SOH-DX1 laser. Hope this helps but it's okay if you dont give a shit lmao, I don't blame you. I'd mod the thing and install the games into the hard drive, too!
I love this old shit, I haven't seen the word 'Thomson' Typed out in fifteen years 😭
I dug out my OG xbox and had the slipping belt, i replaced it but it still wont read. Can you softmod without a working drive?

This is my absolute favorite channel by far. Just -- simple, straight to the point, funny, and cultured with crappy memes and corny jokes.
Okay, the only problem i have with your videos: they are too short. I could watch you all day!
Matt, fwiw (from audio optical drive experience), tired/slipping drive belts can mean weak drive clamping, which means the disc isn't spinning at the expected speed when the drive tries to read the TOC. A cheap/easy check on that drive is a belt swap, I think. Thanks for lots of great videos. Did an condition inventory of my OG Xboxes over the holidays and was reminded of your clock cap vid.
the belt is only for the disk drive to open and close the lid, what would this have to do with the disc spinning or not (or too slow) ?
@@MultiWirth are all the Xbox drives direct drive?
@@ChlorideCull every cd/dvd/bd drive is direct drive!? 🤔😅
@@MultiWirth in some cd-rom/dvd drives, the same belt-driven rack that moves thd drive sled also tilts/moves the block holding the motor (and drive spindle) and optical block and rails. This allows the disc to clear the drive spindle when it is shuttled in and out of the drive. If the belt slips, the whole assembly isn't lifted back up all the way, meaning the disc isn't clamped tightly between the drive spindle and the clamping hub on the top, so the disc slips during spinup. (Also something I have witnessed on laserdisc) Edit: "transport". Not sure why I couldn't remember it's called a transport.
Done a belt swap on a big ol Yamaha multi disk changer (CDC-805) a little while back, it's amazing seeing it spring back to life like nothing was wrong, plays music great too, with some dusting and cleaning it looks great still too. It's a surprising amount of fun to maintain and use some nice retro tech since it can be as good or sometimes better than modern equivalents, and old consoles like the Xbox never stop being cool
I like to watch repair channels on KZhead. I always find it so satisfying when the warranty sticker gets removed intact. For the Xbox you can use IPA to loosen to glue and peel back the sticker slightly to get to the screw. They usually use a thin blade to start removing the sticker.
Thank you for countdown timer on the sponsored segment, it's such a nice touch! More youtubers need to do that!
Something interesting I noticed is while the board is the 1.6 revision and it has the Samsung cd drive that can be in any version, it has a WD hard drive instead of a Seagate, which are usually only found in later 1.0s to 1.2 models. Kind of interesting that the WD drives were used that late in the console’s lifespan.
I really appreciate this video because I’m going through a similar issue/repair! My dad’s old Xbox died and I’m hoping to fix those same 5 capacitors that have been leaking (his Xbox is also a 1.6) so this video helps a lot! Thanks Matt! :)
I had to replace those caps with my Halo Xbox thats also a 1.6. I'm sure almost every 1.6 xbox might end up having this issue at some point. Dunno about the other models.
You have a 1.6 Halo edition? They’re fairly uncommon, most i’ve seen, including my own are 1.2s
I bought 2 nonworking 1.6's recently, both have the bulging caps near the CPU that prevented the units from working, for testing i only replaced those caps and the xboxs started working again, I'd keep an eye on the power supply caps too

Awesome video man! 👏 I've 2 og xbox's that were faulty. I have a v1.6 crystal cased og which had the Same 5 caps near the cpu pop last year. I tried to replace them but got annoyed and put it to one side for the year lol. I decided to try and finish fixing it recently replacing all 5 as I wasn't sure if it was just 1 or all so I thought might aswell change them all. Got the job done and the beauty booted first go! I was so pleased with myself 😂 I also removed the clock on my v1.4 board last year around the same time, I did try to replace it but it didn't work so the old cap must have damaged the traces (might have another go soon) but otherwise the console is working fine. 😊
Like the live commentary format for these types of videos that don't require a lot of backstory/explanation. Probably much easier to edit too! :p
A couple of years ago I bought one of those box of Xbox consoles that were put away. What I got was an original Xbox+controller+360phat+360phatbroken+6 games for $20. I think it was a Good deal. I already had a 1.6, but I want to use the other for modding.

The new caps aren’t smaller. They’re shorter, yes. But at the same time their thicker 😂 So in the end you’re having the same volume.
my favourite console to fix, i have 7 xboxes and replaced all caps on it, two of them also had all caps leaking including the clock (was not a 1.6), i recommend replacing all the 3300uF caps even if they look good to be honest (like you did but you had to :) ) love your videos, thanks for sharing

Lol I am kind of in awe of the kind of person who doesn't bother to set the clock. Such monsters!!!
Used to own one of these. My little brothers lost it when we moved. We don’t know if it’s in storage or if we left it at our old house. It was modded and had almost every XBOX title on its harddrive. I miss it.
I am doing this exact same project right now. Bought a "like new" xbox from mercari for 15$. No power, and same bad caps. Was wondering if anyone had repaired theirs by replacing them all. Thanks for the vid! Soldering station is heating up now

Being a retro game collector who also has a dust allergy, it’s been…fun trying to clean legit any old tech XD
An N95 mask makes the process a lot less painful as it can filter out the particulates.

"We have *NOT* been trying to reach you regarding your Original Xbox's extended warranty"
if you really want to keep stickers intact I've found a bit of isopropyl alcohol around the edge will release, but not dissolve, the adhesive meaning you can stick it back down after you do have to be careful with lifting the sticker, if you don't want it to look tampered with, though something sharp, but not sharp enough to scratch the plastic I use a metal spudger to lift stickers
I once got an "as new" US Saturn from Ebay as well. The disc drive was busted as in caved in. Managed to get a partial refund. Its still sitting in the basement waiting to be fixed or modded.
I really enjoy your new style of video 👍
Nice setup!
Not sure if you will see this but I have a what I'm calling the Cursed Xbox 1.6 The caps look just fine, and it even powered on right away and even the DVD drive works. Problem is the front buttons are not working right. When plugged in, it instantly turns on and then opens the drive door. You can push the door closed but then the buttons on front can't eject it or turn the Xbox on or off. I've looked at all the guides and videos I could find and been over and over the board. The buttons test fine, the connection to the xbox MB from that card seems fine. The traces are not visibly damaged and I've sounded the various points out all the way to the correct legs on the xyclops chip and there is continuity where there should be and none where there shouldn't be. So nothing appears shorted. I've checked the resistors where the buttons connect to, it seems fine there. I've even checked some of the transistors near the xyclops known to be problems, though every guide on those is for when it won't power on at all. Didn't see any issue though I was just doing basic multi-meter testing on those. The only thing I have left in my book to try as a hail mary is just replacing the caps anyway, and seeing if that could be the problem. A bit more technical data... The power button seems to have around 2v (one old forum post I read suggested this should be 3.3, a possible clue!) while the DVD button has 3.4. The first resistor it hits (R3G3) for the power button has 2v on the right side and 64mv on the left. But the DVD button resistor (R3G4) has 3.4 on both sides. I did find a guide telling me that the left side of the DVD button should be 3.4v and when grounded will be the same as button being clicked. When I push the button, it does indeed ground to 0 on that side like it should. However for the power button it does not, and now I wonder if that could be the problem. The power button itself however is working fine after continuity testing while depressing it. The resistor for power reads like 2.x megaohms so it seems to have resistance but I can't find what the known good value for R3G3 should be or what the voltages should be on each side like I did for the DVD (R3G4). You seem to really know your way around these old xbox machines and so I'm hoping you will have a clue for me! I really need to break this curse! I do plan to order a recap kit from console 5 for both the MB and the power supply, and a new clock cap just to be safe since I think its only like $1 more. I'll update if that solves the problem, but I'll take any advice or data you might have on this as well if you can!
Love the vid as always, good shit
Fixed 5 original XBoxes last year, ALL had bad large capacitors around the CPU, completely re-capped the boards and power supplies and fixed. Replaced the belts, cleaned the lasers, new thermal compound and silent fans, and gifted each of my 3 siblings a like-new XBox for Christmas.
I actually took about my 360 today. Nothing was broken about it, but i found out that in my screwdriver that i have had for a few years has a torx 10 bit.
I modded a Halo 2 Edition 1.4 for a friend a couple years ago and went through all of the emulators, setting them all of for 720p, locking down all the controller settings, etc. The second he took it home and turned it on - nothing. It was dead. Here it was the capacitors underneath the CPU (left of the PSU). You never know when that's going to happen, and I've noticed capacitors die a lot after their first few hours of uptime after a long time of not being powered on at all.
2 things: a) all OG XBox need to be "refurbished" b) you used the wrong caps. A suitable alternative to Nichicon HM (6,3V/3300µF, **11-13mOhm Impedance**, the PW used in the video are NOT suitable due to high Impedance. Haven't looked at Nichicon, but Panasonic FM and FR in 16V/3300µF would have been a suitable replacement. The Impedance of the Capacitor is no less important than the capacity in modern, high frequency SMPS!!! Voltage rating is only relevant because it influences Impedance, other than that, as long as its higher than the voltage used in the circuit. Though, due to the Impedance, you sometimes have to go with rather high voltage ratings like 16 or 25V for a 6,3V Capacitor.
Like the new format Matt
I don't know why i didn't realize that the same guy who does Lego Island videos was the same one who informed me about the Xbox capacitors. Thanks a bunch Matt, you saved my Xbox.

My Xbox died for apparently no reason, and it seems to have the same bulging caps as shown here. I ordered new ones, hopefully when I get around to replacing them it'll work.
Gotta love the cap plague. Got two Cisco Catalyst 2970, and both of them inflation fetish on the 1.8 and 2.5v rail if I can remember correctly. Should recap them, but almost impossible due to the bloody thick PCB and huge ground planes.

Some years ago I got an original one for free. It had small dead cockroaches inside and hat cockroach feces inside. The RF shield had some rust spots because of that. But it still works and is clean and rust free now. Yo can be happy about it only being dusty. :)
my process for replacing caps like that is to just clip the legs and remove them. lets me remove the small legs afterward and that takes less heat and usually less potential to cause damage. i know doing this triggers people though
