Wow after numerous cautious, brilliant and disciplined moves by the Chriatians, greed took over just before the final moment. This is a good textbook study on the necessity to remain disciplined til the very end.

This is why discipline and heirarchy is so important for unit cohesion. Without the pressure of officers and NCOs bearing down on people self interest kicks in and both greed and fear destroy the unit. If you look at the way the Macedonian Phalanx was constructed, for exampe, you see that it wasn't just x amount of people in a rectangular formation. People with experience had roles in different parts of the file to keep others in line. Some of the earliest equivalencies of NCOs can be seen here. Each file of sixteen men had a commander (Dekadarch) and three more experienced soldiers in file with one of them at the end. The unit cohesion of the Tercios would have been based on something akin to this and presumably became muddied during the crossing and battle as units mingled and experienced unit leaders were injured and killed. It is also possible that even the experienced soldiers who were supposed to maintain the cohesion also got greedy and failed to do their job. This of course would lead to a faster breakdown by example.

In Turkish this battle is known as "Kepçe Kazan Savaşı" (The Battle of Ladle and Cauldron) in honor of the cooks and other auxiliary units that took up arms and fought in the face of imminent defeat.

It is today mainly known as "Haçova Savaşı" (Battle of The Field of Cross) by modern Turkish historians. But Ottomans may have used that term to what they experienced that day.

By this time, the Ottomans had reached the very end of the logistical capacities of 16th-19th Century armies in Europe. You could just barely move artillery from Constantinople to Vienna in the spring and summer before the fall rains set in. You could prepare the previous fall, as the Ottomans did in 1683, but your enemies would therefore also have time to prepare. The Ottomans could not establish a closer logistical base, such as at Belgrade, because they were also at war with the Safavid Dynasty of Persia to the east. Basically, they had expanded as far as they could, anywhere.
Projection of power is just as crucial as actual power in the end.
Is it because they expand too quickly than their infrastructure building speed? They don't have to bring something as heavy as artillery but still, the Roman could expand much further than the Ottoman did, or is it because the Janissaries less efficient (at carrying stuff) that the legionaries, or because their enemy had more or less the same technology while the Roman keep inventing like the corvus when they going against the phoenician in the naval warfare
@@yamamotohiromori419 Romans usually expanded on territories that were unorganized. The Ottomans were in a situation where they are surrounded on all sides by countries that are evenly matched, if not superior, to them.

We thaught that war as Battle of Hacova in TR. And also Turkish historians tells the last resistance was prepared by Hoca Sadettin Efendi who was the first teacher and mentor of young Sultan and also an important historian of Ottomans. Actually Sultan decided to run out of the battlefield but Sadettin Efendi cut his way off and tells him "Never before an İslam army which led by the Sultan personally turned its face away from the enemy. You should stay firm and have to show to your servants how to resist the enemy" then Sultan decided to remain. Sadettin Efendi also prepared the resistance among the logistic group of the camp. According to my high school teacher Sadettin Efendi went to the logistic servants who were trying to pack the goods they can carry and tell them "Arent you men! Life of the Sultan is in danger and you just trying to run away! The Sultan is here, doesnt go anywhere. Now we all should do surround him and die nearby him" Then all the kitchen boys, wagon porters, camel feeders grabbed whatever they reach big laddles, hooks, tent sticks etc and fight against the plundering enemy. The first wave of the resistance had arose in that way.
Those low quality sultans with no experience drinking and spending all there time in harem along side the sultanate of women killed our beloved caliphate empire, look at as now watching our brothers and sisters being raped and killed and not doing anything. what a shame.

@@diegochavez4505 That's a popular legend but not quite true. King Richard the Lionheart was done in by a French kid with a crossbow during a siege, the wound eventually festered and killed him. While there are a whole bunch of legends about the event (one referring to him as a cook) we actually know nothing of the boy's occupation or age with any certainry. There isn't even a full consensus regarding his name.
What a dramatic battle. I wish older battles could have been preserved in the same way more "modern" battles are. Each one is a story full of bravery and tragedy, with dramatic plot-twists around every turn. Imagine all battles Rome fought being as well documented as this one.

The Habsburg strategy on ottoman affairs is something to be studied more closely. They literally refused to meet them on an open battlefield until the long turkish war. Dont fight an enemy on the open field you cant beat and wait for a more opportune time and place. Much to learn in that.
plus they had the whole of europe to call on, its not like the Ottomans could call on 20 muslims allies into any of the wars. The other big Muslim power the safavids the Ottomans were constantly at war with on the other side of the empire.

I must agree with No One, the Christians had all their wishes against a further advance of the Ottomans, but in practice nearly nobody was helping the Habsburgs and the Hungarians and they were most of the time not paying their troops either, although Habsbourg Spain had plenty of gold to do so. France allied with the Turcs against the Habsbourgs and were openly helping them to conquer Vienna for crying out loud. Politics and division were a greater lord than religion in practice in Europe. Apart from some adventurers coming to their aid, the Habsburgs were quite alone.
Well it so not true to paint a picture of united europe against ottoman invasion but is it true that they somehow managed to work together against the juggernaut althought being at war or being hostile with eachother all the time. Even the long Term rivals of the bourbon and Habsburg monarchies managed the work together at Gotthard or Look up lepanto or more famously the 2nd Siege of vienna.
The way this channel studies hundred year old registries and records from many different sources and then condenses them into an hour long video it's simply astounding. So much information, so many names, strategies and places all portraited so perfectly and with so much clarity and care that it is perfectly manageable by the viewer and easily retained thanks to the masterful visuals. I wish all history professors would try to teach history with such passion! They who don't know their history, are damned to repeat it. And how true it is for our time.
I got to admit, Mehmed III had me during most of the videos. Looking very incompetent, culminating in his decision to retreat to the camp, leaving 4000 janissaries to their doom outside the camp and looking like a complete fool by mounting no defense of his camp wall, he waited the enemy to get in and turned the tide. The ability of charading a chaos is the acme of discipline according to Tsun Tzu.
When one's ass is on the line and nothing else to loose I guess thats the only thing one can do. :)
He is the most hated sultan in Ottoman history (by his own people). He is not only incompetent, but he is often remembered for killing 19 of his brothers. Fratricide was an Ottoman family tradition, and even a law, at that time, but the residents of Constantinople witnessed 19 little coffins coming out of the palace at a single time, and that was their first impression of the sultan. That was too traumatic that his son Ahmed I abolished fratricide and replaced it with kafes (golden cage) system, he had some other reasons as well but this definitely played a role. Also Mehmed V, the sultan during World War I, refused to visit Mehmed III's tomb during a visit to the tombs of his ancestors, and even cursed him publicly.

While I had known that the Ottomans won this battle for most of this video it didn't seem like it and I was beginning to question whether I recalled my memory correctly. Amazing battle and video. There are a lot of epic battles, plot twists and overall it is the one of the most important events, (if not the most) in the ukrainian history. In fact it is the most important war of Eastern Europe, because it marked the beginning of rise of Russia and fall of Poland-Lithuania. Plus nobody on youtube made a good strategic analysis on it like you do, as far as I know. Thx

Basically "both sides fucked up tremendously and then just decided to forget it and go home afterward" anyway.
Imagine starting a war between two major superpowers just because you are embarassed about how your subordinate went to start shit on his own and got stomped the second time around.
The war called in Turkish kepçe kazan savaşı that means spoon and pot war because the servants cooks, tent makers everyone joined the war in the camp with whatever they found including cook spoons, hammers to make tent and axes to cut trees :)

I love those documentaries talking about events in History mainly unknown. Especially about battles and wars in the Balkans.
In 1006 AH (1597 AD) the ambassadors of Iran, Bukhara, Fez and Venice came with gifts to the Sultan and congratulated him on this great victory. And the emir of Mecca sent the Kiswah of the honorable Kaaba to the Astana (Istanbul) & its people rejoiced and were blessed with it

Love this channel, very good coverage of this war. I also find the bloody revenge raids between the Cossacks and Crimean Tartars very interesting over this time period, even when the Habsburgs and Ottomans were at peace they couldn't stop these people from killing each other.

Last week, I was reading a first-hand source about this war in the Archives of the Prime Minister in Istanbul. According to the source, the Ottoman Sultan didn't want to join in the war, but the official historian of the palace Hodja Sadeddin motivated him to join in it. Finally, Mehmet the third joined the war. Hodja Sadeddin was Sultan`s advisor at the same time.

Just goes to show you the value of persistence. The Ottoman head honcho stayed and rallied his troops, while that archduke dude fled to the stream and didn’t even bother heading into his own camp, so he lost. Like an old staff sergeant I knew used to say, discipline wins battles.

@A R These numbers are subject to great bias. Like imagine the first fight, Christians lost 15 men while there are Janissaries shooting them? And Ottomans lost 1000? Westerners sure know how to manipulate the results. Howerver, I would agree that Ottomans in total would outnumber them due to their old Roman conscription methods but it would not be 2 or 3 to one.

Janissaries were 50.000 men at their peak (and that was the time after they abandon devshirme system). Also Ottomans did not have "nobles". They were appointed officers. The Turkish nobility stood on their Beyliks.

Despite the Christian defeat, the archduke's redemption arc was absolutely cinematic. The man went from an inexperienced commander who almost compromised the entire campaign and was appointed due to corruption, to an observant and astute General who repeatedly proved his worth. Correctly assessing the opposing army's condition and the decision to wage a war of attrition gave the Christians the advantage they had on the final day of battle. And the only reason they lost is because some of the "experienced" commanders didn't listen to his sound and cautious advice. Not to mention that even when the allied army fell into disarray, it was only the archduke with his cavalry contingent that managed to maintain cohesion and a battle line, and saved the allied army numerous times. Whats with the qoutation marks? Are you implying that they were as inexperienced as Maximilian or lesser experienced? They certainly were, they did fought the ottomans for years or even decades. This was just aggressiveness in the commanders' part.
@unkownbyname7773 no I'm not implying that they weren't experienced, I used the quotation marks for irony, because these experienced commanders who were supposed to be trusted were the ones whose commands caused the ottomans to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Commanders experienced against the ottomans being to blame for an ottoman victory while the inexperienced archduke struggled to turn the tide is pretty ironic

I remember as a kid, thinking to myself that it was amazing the Ottomans won so many victories against the Europeans, considering the fact that the European soldiers were armoured from head to toe with chain-mail and plate armour. The Ottoman troops by comparison were very lightly armoured. It really put Ottoman troops at a disadvantage when involved in in clashes with European troops. Honestly, the European soldiers looked like mediaeval robocops.
ottoman janissaries were superior professional troops than european knights nearly 2 centuries(late 14th century to late 16th century) their equipments were also heavy. they wear 35 kg chain mail armour with additional plate armour.

You have to learn about ottoman army system before comparing to europeans. Videos are not fair as you listened this war from european side. To approach better reviews, such subjects must be researched from both sides.

The man of the battle was the high cleric Hoca Sadeddin Efendi ❤ In the second day of battle the Ottoman army appeared to have been defeated. According to the 17th Century Ottoman historian İbrahim Peçevi: "The Christians broke through the Ottoman army, but the soldiers of Islam had not yet felt the defeat." Commander Sultan Mehmed III wanted to flee from the battlefield. However, his tutor, the high cleric Hoca Sadeddin Efendi, told the Sultan that he should continue the battle till the end against the European armies to save Islamic dignity. Heeding this advice, Sultan Mehmed III ordered a full counter attack.

You tell the tale of the battle well. It is astounding to hear how the Christian forces prevailed in every clash until they lost discipline and fell to looting before the battle was over; talk about snatching defeat from the jaws of victory! One edit I would recommend is to replace all references to" rifles" to "muskets". I much doubt that more than a few - if indeed any! - of the firearms were rifled, even among the better-equipped Christian forces.

I love your content. Have you ever thought about making a video on the Rebellions of Upper & Lower Canada in 1837/38? It was Canada's failed revolution against the British.
It wasn't against "the British" it was mainly due to political corruption and a desire for local reform. Thankfully it was defeated, many of the rebels hung, and the Canadian federation was formed.

In this battle, the numbers were equal to each other. the armies were around one hundred thousand. the combined army was ready for a full field battle. but the Turkish army was a siege army and was not suitable for a field battle.

Nobody has ever "won" a battle. What sometimes happens is that one side loses more than the rest, but the most common is that everyone loses.

Man, it was a balls up from the beginning on the Christians side. Took two weeks to even think of relieving the fort. They were supposedly dug in and waiting for the Sultan to come to them, but were caught with their pants down. Also, very little was done to fortify their positions. Then you had the infantry leave formation to cross the river and were slaughtered. And finally, disregarding their position and overall tactics for a "Leroy Jenkins" that cost them dearly. Terrible leadership displayed, and a fine example of everything wrong with a hastily combined allied force.

@@LAH92 lol, I was half way through writing "Hail Mary", but thought it bad taste considering they were Christians, and old Leroy suited the allied leader's behaviour better. When they announce the Christians were going to dig in and wait for the Sultan to come to them, I was impressed. When the Sultan arrived late to practically zero defences, I was constantly shaking my head.

At 34:35 you state that the Christians were "outgunned". If the initial Ottoman artillery consisted of 170 inferior cannon and they lost 49 cannon (43+6) to the Christians in two earlier engagements, how can the Christians be "outgunned" given that the Christians had 97 superior cannon to begin with -- plus the 49 captured Ottoman cannon? Ottomans: 170 inferior cannon - 49 cannon lost = 121 inferior cannon Christians: 97 superior cannon + 49 captured Ottoman cannon = 146 cannon
Maybe they didn't have the appropriate ammuninion for ottoman cannons. I guess both army estimated number of volleys they will fire that day and bring just enough ammunition. It seems logical since both sides might fear leaving excessive amount of ammunition behind in case of potential withdrawal. Also those cannon balls were probably hella heavy.
They would be outgunned for a simple reason - they had not concentated their entire arillery in a single "grand battery" (as Napoleon used to over 200 years later). Each Christian contingent had it's own artillery and some was left to secure the camp (possibly all captured Turkish pieces as well). Mind you demi-culverin, which was the heaviest gun possible to move on the battle field had a range of about 550 - 600 meters. Transilvanian artillery on the southern flank (in the war-wagon camp) definitelly could not reach the main ford area, because of the curve in the battle line.
@@MarcusBrutusPLalso, aren't artillerymen specially trained troops, so even if they have captured additional guns, would they be able to man those pieces with decent gunners, they wouldn't have enough gunners, won't they??
ı dont think ottoman guns were inferior for 16th c. these guys main job was besieging castles.

Wow. It seems that Ottoman army's discipline never breaks. There were other moments as well where Janissaries reorganized themselves despite being dispersed. For example, when Vlad raided Ottoman Sultan camp and got almost next to Sultan's tent but then Janissary surrounded the Sultan's camp and didn't lose their nerves. This increasing capacity to reorganized themselves and stay disciplined is the most distinct feature of armies of late medieval age. Compare it to early medieval period where in battles like the one that fought between Arabs and Persians the routed part of army never returns to battlefield and tend to lose nerves entirely when they feel surrounded.
Im just going to point out that whoever you are, you are a truly gifted narrator who has yet to be aptly recognised for the talent you are. I would love to hear you narrate the "Earth war stories" from the Alien franchise literature by Dark Horse comics, or better yet Robert E Howards Conan. However for now I am happy to learn of historic confrontations because your voice is so very easy on the ear. Please keep doing what you do, and I hope that one day you will be discovered for greater projects where you belong.

The Ottoman Sultan Probably only have 1/2/2 stats to begin with but the Christian having at leat 2/3/2 or 1/0/2 Princes. It 's indecisive battle, and very frustrating how both Armies create mistakes after mistakes that eventually all those stacks only meant huge amount casualities.

European Historian Rules: 1- If Turks wins, they were superior in numbers and their enemy were in a bad conditions and nobody helped them etc. 2- If Turks loose, they were superior in numbers and their enemy were heroes and inhuman strong people. If you follow these two rules, congratulations you can also be western historian.
