It was so cool to find out that Barty credited Serena with encouraging her to stay in the game and subsequently win 3 majors. I think Barty would have had a great rivalry with Swiantek but ultimately her heart just wasn’t in it. Still an incredibly accomplished brief pro career she had.

I remember watching this match. Just can't believe that this same girl Ash Barty in the future would become world number 1 and win 3 grand slams. Crazy. And she retired ranked number 1.

The round after this she played her best match of the tournament against Görges . It's a shame she had to pull out of the QFs because I feel like she could have won this year

Same. I thought since this is the slam she has to work the hardest to win, it would have created a heighten focus.

Serena has played against different players who hit hard, charge the net and slice, Barty's slice was nothing new for her...

i mean...when you have played the likes of Magui Serna, Steffi Graf, Irina Spirlea, Conchita Martinez and Monica Nicalescu, you are pretty much prepared for a hard sliced backhand.

A year before Barty becomes number 1 and she's getting crushed by a post-pregnancy 36 year old Serena. Peak Serena would demolish her 6-0 6-0

This is hardly peak barty, and I’m not sure how a 3 set match is in anyway ‘crushed’ but pop off sis.

@@Ineddiblehulk Peak Barty isn't that much more impressive than she is here, Ash was never that dominant of a player. And Serena is much further off her peak than Barty is.

It was impressive to see Serena play this well after being literally split open. Barty played well but she hadn’t quite hit her peak yet. Her win at Wimbledon was the best I’d ever seen her play. I miss them both.

I miss Barty, especially that slice backhand. Some she has some beautiful precision with that shot. I love Williams’ record and accomplishments, and I love her public persona off the court, but on the court I could never be a fan of all that yelling. I know people also criticized her fashion and I can’t say I was ever a fan of that either but it was the least of my concerns. However I recall this particular outfit was helpful to her health because after the birth of her daughter she had some issues with her circulation. You have to give her credit for continuing to push herself.

I think the on court emotion and yelling got more dramatic as she got older, especially under Mouratoglou. There was hardly any of it in the 90s.
